We've always known that NFL Hall of Famer John Riggins had a little Ted Nugent in him. But who would've guessed he's part Bobby Flay too?

It was just announced that the former Redskins running back will host his own hunting and cooking show on the Sportsman Channel. "Riggo on the Range" will be part outdoor adventure and part pots and pans.

"Growing up in the Midwest, I have always had a love of the outdoors and a passion for hunting," Riggins said in a press release. "But I also love to mix it up in the kitchen."

The host will also mix it up with different celebrities on each episode. Although no names were released, representatives from the Sportsman Channel say the famous guests will come from various disciplines including food, music and sports. Here's hoping Jared Allen is one of the surprise celebrity guests. The Vikings defensive end is as avid hunter himself and last year released a wild game cookbook.

For anyone who is picturing Riggins doing a public-access style show picking off deer in his backyard, that's not the case. He'll travel well beyond his Maryland home and even out of the country.

"I've been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to hunt all over the world," Riggins said. "Each place I've visited has its own uniqueness and character, and I want to bring to our audience the flavor of places we’ll venture to each week, where people have been working and living off the land for centuries."

In the first episode, Riggins bounces from Kansas to New Mexico to Canada. Then he puts his culinary twist on the catch in a true forest-to-table manner. It's a unique idea that promises some unexpected scenes from the always colorful Riggins. If he's half as animated as he is when criticizing the Redskins ownership and coaching, the show could be must-watch for hunting, cooking and sports fans.

"Riggo on the Range" premieres in January.

Is it really necessary?
Dead Trophy Bucks May Soon Father Fawns with Does Hundreds of Miles Away

An absolute monster of a buck harvested in Illinois successfully impregnated six does in Louisiana after his death. That sounds impossible, but with the help of a determined hunter and the brains and technology of a researcher at Louisiana State University, it’s very possible.
Hunter Mike Toney shot a trophy whitetail buck in Illinois last November. The buck’s antlers rated in the high 200s. Toney estimates that the buck weighed about 275 pounds, deer that weigh 170 to 180 are already considered pretty big in Illinois.
After the harvest, Toney thought back on a research project he had heard about conducted by Louisiana State University researchers at AgCenter Research Extension. He contacted the researchers to see if they could make use of the semen from the monstrous buck and drove the semen down eight hours to Louisiana after properly packing the testicles to ensure the preservation of viable semen.
Dearl Sanders, resident coordinator at the LSU AgCenter’s research station in Idlewild, Louisiana said breeding deer with big horns for hunters is just one of the many advantages of artificially inseminating does.
“It gives a whole new method of moving deer genetics from the wild into other herds of deer,” Sanders said in an interview with Grand View Outdoors. “Say you found a herd of deer in a state where you can’t move the deer – there are a number of those – that had an inherent resistance to a disease. This could be a way to move that genetic material to any area of the country.”
Toney reached Jesse Saenz who was a member of the LSU research team that successfully birthed three fawns in June 2006 through extracting semen from dead bucks. Saenz earned his master’s degree in 2007 with a thesis about the best techniques for extracting semen from dead bucks, but he was now working weekdays at the Audubon Center for Research of Endangered Species in New Orleans studying cat testicles for his doctorate. That Sunday in November, he extracted and froze the deer’s semen.
“I processed it, got the sperm out. They were still kicking pretty good,” Saenz said.
At the Baton Rouge and Genex Cooperative Inc., a supplier of dairy and cattle semen, the semen was loaded into 100 plastic straws and frozen in liquid nitrogen. Each straw held enough material to inseminate two does.
A total of 16 does were inseminated with semen from the trophy buck. Six became pregnant and are expected to give birth possibly next week.
LSU lawyers are looking to patent and license the insemination technique developed by Saenz for his master’s thesis. Although Saenz and Sanders say they do no plan on beginning semen sales, there is a thriving market for semen from pedigreed bucks. Straws containing half a cubic centimeters, or about one-tenth of a teaspoon, may sell for up to $10,000.

..........has recoverable oil that equals that of the proven oil reserves of the world. This is a report from the Gov't Acct. Office (GAO). Why are we still buying oil from the Middle East?

(CNSNews.com) - The Green River Formation, a largely vacant area of mostly federal land that covers the territory where Colorado, Utah and Wyoming come together, contains about as much recoverable oil as all the rest the world’s proven reserves combined, an auditor from the Government Accountability Office told Congress on Thursday.

The GAO testimony stressed that the federal government was in “a unique position to influence the development of oil shale” because the Green River deposits were mostly beneath federal land.

It also noted that developing the oil would pose “socioeconomic challenges,” which included bringing “a sizable influx of workers who along with their families put additional stress on local infrastructure” and “making planning for growth difficult for local governments.”

“The Green River Formation--an assemblage of over 1,000 feet of sedimentary rocks that lie beneath parts of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming--contains the world's largest deposits of oil shale,”Anu K. Mittal, the GAO’s director of natural resources and environment said in written testimony submitted to the House Science Subcommittee on Energy and Environment.

“USGS estimates that the Green River Formation contains about 3 trillion barrels of oil, and about half of this may be recoverable, depending on available technology and economic conditions,” Mittal testified.

“The Rand Corporation, a nonprofit research organization, estimates that 30 to 60 percent of the oil shale in the Green River Formation can be recovered,” Mittal told the subcommittee. “At the midpoint of this estimate, almost half of the 3 trillion barrels of oil would be recoverable. This is an amount about equal to the entire world's proven oil reserves.”

In her oral statement before the subcommittee, Mittal said that developing the shale oil would create wealth and jobs for the country, but also challenges for government.

“Being able to tap this vast amount of oil locked within this formation will go a long way to help to meet our future demands for oil. The U.S. Geological Survey, as you noted, estimates that the formation contains about 3 trillion barrels of oil of which half may be recoverable,” she said.

“As you can imagine having the technology to develop this vast energy resource will lead to a number of important socioeconomic benefits including the creation of jobs, increases in wealth and increases in tax and royalty payments for federal and state governments,” she said.

“While large-scale oil-shale development offers socioeconomic opportunities it also poses certain socioeconomic challenges that also should not be overlooked,” she testified. “Oil shale development like other extractive industries can bring a sizable influx of workers who along with their families put additional stressed on local infrastructure. Development from expansion of extractive industries has historically followed a boom-and-bust cycle making planning for growth difficult for local governments.”

In her written testimony , Mittal noted that three-fourths of the Green River shale oil is under federal land.

“The federal government is in a unique position to influence the development of oil shale because nearly three-quarters of the oil shale within the Green River Formation lies beneath federal lands managed by the Department of the Interior’s (Interior) Bureau of Land Management (BLM),” she testified
