Well it looks like I'm going turkey hunting this spring, have a place over by Mt Vernon. Easterns on farm fields and tree lines, one small creek bottom there. Lots of Turkeys, but I'm a little intimidated. I'm used to hunting North Central Nebraska for Merriams, lots of breaks and draws, the birds where very mobile and you could stay busy all day running and gunning, covering alot of territory on 5 and 6 thousand acre ranches. My buddy, who now runs a guide business there and I used to clean up. Just had to get in front of them and call, sometimes early you could bring them in from miles away. What am I going to run into hunting on a 300 acre farm......during the 4th and 5th season?

Eatmore if they have not been hunted a lot get there and locate and set up before first light and hope they are willing to work. If not keep trying to locate until time to get out of the woods. You may find if they have been hunted hard that they will shut up as soon as they are called to but may still come in and take a look. Good luck, hope others can give you more advise.

yeah what he said....... also if they shut up on you at flydown dont just keep hamering on them give them an hour to do there morning ritual and if your lucky being late season they wont find a hen and then you can bet he will come find you...

A lot will have to due with the weather and what the hens are doing. One of the advantages of having a latter season is some of the hens maybe done breeding. This may make the toms more receptive and eager to come to your call. It is difficult to call a tom off hens he is already with. A disadvantge to 4th and 5th season will be that a lot of dumb birds will already be dead. Like harry said you locate where the bird are roosting and spending there day on the ground. You can never scout to much.

I live in Mt.vernon, this county is loaded with turkeys, if you have 300 acres to roam you should be able to get into birds. I have third season and ususally get out at 9 and just walk and call, if a bird answers about 90% of the time he will come in. He is lonely and looking for hens! Most of the birds that I have run into late in the morning come storming in! Just hunt till 1pm, keep hunting and you will run into some birds.

Ah Love the Turkey woods! Just be patient. This flat land will get you busted so less movement is better...sometimes. Should have them pretty well patterned if you've been watching them. Just don't want to chase them off. My best suggestion that time of year is less calling is better, woodsmanship and stealthiness will prevail.

I'll be in the woods 3rd & 5th season...

I like the late seasons... birds aren't quite as tight to the hens. Try to put em to bed. Then you know right where to be in the am.

Might take a day or 3 to figure out how they work the farm.

Some good advice from these guys . I'm with Bob, I personally like the late season better than the first few seasons. try to pattern the birds, from a distance, listen to where they are roosted for as many days as you can before your season, definitely roost them the night before your hunt, then try to get as close as possible the morning of your hunt, I would be within 100 yards in late season if possible and have a few decoys set up where they can see them, (if the area hasn't been hunted too much). I think with hunting tree lines you're not going to be able to move much, so hopefully you can get them off the roost.
I'm getting pumped for Turkey season! I may go out in the morning and see if I can hear some gobblin'

Thanks for all the input ! I'm getting pretty excited... didnt get to go out at all for anything last fall, so I'm just about bonkers right now. And of coarse my buddy in Nebraska calls all the time rubbin in the great huntiing season they had.... hopefully get a nice Eastern this spring...actually, never thought about it before right now, that would give me a Merriams, a Rio, then the eastern....mmmmmm, anyone want to consider a trip to Florida next spring.... oops, getting ahead of myself! better get the eastern first! LOL
