My grandma used to make the best jelly from elderberries. I sure do miss it. Of course I miss her too, but some good elderberry jelly would be good.
FunGusAmonGus 06-10-2007, 18:52 Hey Life theres a place in Sparta called Buchheits its kinda a farmsupply-hardware store. They have elderberry jelly there. Also if you go down toward Kinkaid Lake between Cambell Hill and Ava theres a place called the Shawnee Country Store. Its run by the Amish they have really good elderberry jelly and all kinds of stuff you can't hardly find anywhere anymore.
i agree elerberries make great wine. me and my dad make about 50 gallons of it a year. the berries stain your hands purple for about a week though
DetectDave 06-10-2007, 19:38 Seems like I've seen more bushes this year than in many years past. I have driven past the road to that Shawnee Country Store tons over the past year enroute to our hunt club and have always wondered about it. Now I will stop in for sure. Passed it today as a matter of fact. Their "Ripe Tomatoes" sign always beckons me too.
FunGusAmonGus 06-11-2007, 16:56 believe it or not someone told me the grow their tomatoes with hydroponics

Bet they get a lot of berries on small plants...
I grew some tomatoes, and peppers in hydro once. It works VERY well. I had 4 times the peppers in hydro, than I did in soil per plant; same strain.
I think I may try that again...
FunGusAmonGus 06-11-2007, 17:03 It seams strange to me the Amish won't ride in a car but they will grow their crops in hydro....

Well FunGus, looks like me and the missus are gonna have to take us a road trip this weekend. Sparta's quite a ways to go for jelly. That Shawnee Country Store sounds like a fun place to shop. Kinkaid's not as much fun to go to when the boat's in the shop though.
gretchensteele 06-11-2007, 21:32 I'm not sure that the amish run the store...I think they sell a good many of their goods there, but I think the folks that actually own the store aren't Amish.....I believe the folks that run the store also raise elk and market elk meat products there.
FunGusAmonGus 06-11-2007, 21:38 that could be. The people who are there when I go there are dressed like Amish and they speak German.
FunGusAmonGus 06-14-2007, 15:54 something else that can be done with elderberry http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t309/fabfive2001/DSC00773.jpg before...
gretchensteele 06-14-2007, 17:20 Fungus I am suspicious that you are right...I think I had the folks confused with the family that raises the buffalo and elk...they sell their stuff there...so I believe I had it backwards....
gretchensteele 06-14-2007, 17:21 Last year we had 55gal drum of elderberry wine...pretty pink and so good....didn't know the local wineries made it too!
lifestudent55 06-14-2007, 19:19 Last year we had 55gal drum of elderberry wine...pretty pink and so good....didn't know the local wineries made it too!
Do you think that was enough?
I've never had elderberry wine, but I think it would taste great.
gretchensteele 06-14-2007, 19:42 oh get you a bottle...it is so very good....I use it to marinate too....especially good on lighter meats....
gretchensteele 06-14-2007, 19:46 as for the big batch..myself and a couple buddies were getting berries for jelly...they were drinking stag...lots of Stag....we ended up with way more than I was going to cook into jelly so they decided after yet another case of Stag to make it into wine...I had my doubts...but for a couple of drunks and crazy old woman...it turned out pretty good!
