View Full Version : Trouble with Spider Wire........
FunGusAmonGus 06-09-2007, 13:32 I have a micro caster that came with 4lbs test and last night I rigged it with spider wire it was suppose to be 4 lbs. dia. rated at 15 lbs ( thats the smallest I could find) I wanted to try it cause of the low memory. It keeps foulin in the reel. Maybe its not made for ultra-lites. I don't know. Any suggestions????
I've never been a big fan of braided lines. You'll break a pole before the line. Also it can be rough on eyelets of your rods.
If it is the stretch of mono you don't like I suggest flouro...
FunGusAmonGus 06-09-2007, 23:10 well I thought I had the problem licked with a shot of the good stuff..WD-40 but after getting out on the water it still bound up.It pissed me off so bad I was about to toss my shiit in the drink. Then I thought this ain"t worth the high blood pressure........... I'm going back to the cheap stuff.
im with bob on this. i used it for about 1 week and destroyed 2 rods (well the guides anyway). I suggest P-line fluoracarbon great stuff is on a grey/black spool. dont get the xxx kind it sucks
Smokey Mc Pot 06-10-2007, 01:08 im more of a stren kinda guy myself the one and the only the original
I'm going back to the cheap stuff.
PLEASE tell me your cheap stuff is still name brand??? Like Trilene (Unless it's Stren:p that stuff stinks) Oh and the fluro ain't exactly cheap at $10 a spool.

the $3.00 for 700 yrds shakespeare omniflex worked worked better than the spider wire which was $12 for 150 yrds.
Try the trilene XL or XT for the cheap, but good alternative. If you want to spend a little more go with the Vanish or P-Line.
Just hackin on ya Smoke, I quit using Stren when I was about 14.
Smokey Mc Pot 06-10-2007, 11:23 what man is it out of style is it kidish man ive been using triline to but putting 17 pund test on my baitcaster adn trying to flip and the string come out all twirly not being able to see the line straight so i just use stren its just as tough and cheaper to now i have never used the sheakespear stuff so i cant quote on that every lit bit when i buy a spool of string i get a bad one thats what gets me off of that brand getting a bad spool
...but putting 17 pund test on my baitcaster...
I don't think I've ever, in my life, thrown anything bigger than 12 in fresh water.
I go up to 20 pound on my frog rod...and 12 to 17 on my worm rod depending if i'm fishing alot of grass or not. It helps when ya gotta horse em outta the weeds.
Smokey Mc Pot 06-10-2007, 13:15 ah on the frog i go with 14 but on the flipping stick i have 20 right now i wish i had 17 but its to pull fish out of the cover your in if you got the hawg on the line you gots to get him out of there somehow and im not jumping in unless i have to but you just start pullin or just keep the line tighttill you get over there
FunGusAmonGus 06-10-2007, 15:13 I seen my cousin pull in a 17 lbs red snapper on a 4 lbs test down it the Gulf took about 2 hours. That taught me what could be done with a light line if you play it right of course there was no cover like around here.
i just recently put 12lb fireline on my soft plastic rods and havent had a prob with it. the sensitivity is great so you can feel everything. i like the no strech on long hook sets
lifestudent55 06-10-2007, 20:19 I had Spiderwire on my baitcaster and my old Mitchell 300. I had to replace the line on my Mitchell 324 because it was getting a lot of use (yeah, I brought the old toys out of retirement). Two spools of Trilene low vis green and one of Shakespeare because I had it in the weight I wanted on that reel. My favorite is the Trilene.
Also try some cajun red....It a good mono.
gretchensteele 06-11-2007, 10:11 If you guys saw what utter crap I fished with you would all have stroke!!! But hey...it works for me ! I guess I'm not "serious" enough about it LOL-
My dearly beloved had one of those hissy fits last Wedndesday...then we spent a half an hour looking for his rod in the brush behind the dam.....

Now, now... a true hissy fit and it would have went in the water. Then you could go get some better gear, and the hissy problem will go away. :p
