View Full Version : pheasants at carlyle????
A guy at work last night said something about there was a controlled pheasant hunt at Carlyle. Apparently this past weekend it was free, guess they were just trying to get the birds that were realeased outa there:confused::confused::confused:
Anyone else hear about this?
Dont know what your ? is but there are controlled pheasant hunts at Carlyle. And at the end of the season they have what they call a free clean up. You get to work your dog on the left over pheasants.
My question was, had anyone heard of it...
Apparently you had, you explained it quite well. I on the other hand, hadn't heard anything about it. Actually I was unaware that there were controlled pheasant hunts at Carlyle. And was quite surprised that they would do it for free, even if only at the end of the year to clean out the birds.

All state controlled pheasant sites have clean up the last week there open. Yes it's free the birds are allready paid for kind of like scratch birds at a club.
I hunted the last Saturday with 2 good dogs and we played heII to get our birds. I would imagine cleanup week was a bit lonely for the dogs. They just weren't out there. Although a little girl did manage to shoot her mom about 100 yards from me.

Do what????
You mean dusted or peppered?
The guy that told me about it, said his son and his buddy killed 7 birds at Carlyle.
Never heard about anyone gettin shot though...
I got a ticket about 400 yards away from the "controlled" pheasant hunting area there at carlyle...I guess hunting from the bank is more dangerous that this controlled pheasant hunting bs. CPO told me 2 trucks had their windows blasted out when guys were walking along the road looking for birds and didnt look before shooting. IMO, its kinda stupid to walk around these marked fields with quite a few other hunters in the same area. We were hunting a bank over by the pheasant area and while on a pee break, a guy with us actually flushed a pheasant and shot it. It had wondered out of the area I guess.
wolfgang 01-20-2009, 23:58 The birds at Carlyle like to fine a spot and stay there, one hunt we did out there we got 7 of our 10 in one spot.
I read about the someone getting shot at Carlyle. Unaware it was a little girl and her mom. Seems like they do crowd you in there. I hunt Carlyle six times this year and Ramsey three. We had one day at Carlyle, three people and three dogs, didnt fire a shot.
Full Draw 01-21-2009, 08:01 I have never had good luck at Carlyle. When they used to have one at Washington County we usually did pretty well there.
Phishermanjohn 01-22-2009, 10:34 i saw online Horseshoe lake offers these as well. anyone got any info?
Groundshrinkage 01-22-2009, 16:40 I believe the park is Eldin Haslett or something close to that. I know the last name is Haslett anyway. Been there several times. You can usually kill out by mid morning. but like most controlled pheasant hunts its like shooting chickens. Went last year in a new snow. You could find the tracks and follow them to a bird bedded down, kick it up and shoot. We killed out in 45 minutes. It was fun at the time, but in retrospect I felt a little guilty and feel it wasn't very ethical from a fair chase sporting aspect. for that reason I would rather not hunt them in the snow. Its too easy.

Peppered her at area 7 around 930 am. A meat wagon rolled off with her so it was not a good thing, but the warden told us she was released later the same day with a few extra pieces of steel that will remain with her. There was blood and holes in her clothes so it was not a graze wound. The dad said she got the pheasant and her mom cant verify that though.
Camaro130 01-24-2009, 10:07 Yes there are pheasant hunts at Horseshoe Lake. Season runs till the 31st of Jan. Not near as a big a spot as Hazlet. Only allow 42 hunter in the field and only 4 spots to hunt. Also its more expensive than Hazlet, $23 for 2 birds instead of the $15 at Hazlet. This is because it is a co-op between the state and a private breeder. They also have special 4 bird hunts on Mondays throughout the season. Last one this Monday the 26th $34 for 4 birds. I have been several times this year and always get my birds. Went yesterday on standby and they only released birds in 3 of the 4 areas. Well 4 of us got stuck in the 1 area they didnt release any birds in that day. Frank the guy that takes your license and gives you the back patch said you can hunt if you want till 10:00 then move. I went out anyway and got my 2 birds in 45 mins. Was the second guy to check out. So late in the season there are birds everywhere :) If anyone goes out there try and stay away from area 1 unless you like stalking them in the thick woods, also area 3 only has like 5 acres of tall grass to hunt the rest is wide open field :( Areas 2 and 4 are the way to go if you want to work your dogs and get some nice clean shots.
Camaro Interesting coments about Horseshoe hunting area. Always wanted to talk to someone that goes up there. Was thinking about going there the last week of this season. Noticed they have permits left on the internet. Never been there. Didnt know they had the hen day though out the season on Mondays. Why would they stick you in an area and not release any birds. Did you have to pay? Do you use dogs? Sorry about all the ??
Camaro130 01-25-2009, 09:02 I didn't have to hunt. Could of gone home, but I know late in the season there are plenty of leftover birds everywhere. They said they counted wrong and thats why no birds where released in the area I hunted. Thought they only had 32 hunters when they actually had 36 of us. And yes I had to pay even thou no birds where released in my area. Yes I use dogs. Have 2 young male English Pointers. Just me and the 2 dogs always get the birds in less than a hour. If I take 3-4 guys and have to get 10 birds. Or on a special hunt day when you have to shot 16-20 of them it gets tough. Lots of walking but always get some birds :)
