View Full Version : ? about season dates
sir harry otto 01-16-2009, 18:29 Got my permit in the mail yesterday and after looking at it
I noticed it said Apr. 7th - 11th. But on the DNR site it says
First season south zone Apr 6th-10th. Wouldn't have noticed if I had not already put in for vac. time already
for the 6th-10th. Which one is right? Common sense says
go with the dates on the permit but this could make for
some real problems for those that do not look at their
permit closely and hunt on the 6th. Just an obsevation
that might save someone a ticket.
flatlander 01-16-2009, 18:47 &*%#^ I'm in the same exact boat as you.
I just put in for it about a week ago (April 6-10).
Glad you posted because i never noticed it.
Hopefully I'm not to late and can change my vacation.:mad::mad:
Another thing that was puzzling me is that with my permit there was a memo saying If you no longer qualify for this permit, You must return it to the DNR.It then goes on to say, Enclosed is your 2009 free "property Only Hunting" spring turkey permit. ?????????????????
Do all permit's come with this, I didn't send in for land owner tags.
Got my tag the other day ...... checked mine too....
I got 3rd season southern zone...supposed ta start April 17th-22..My tags says April 18th - 23.
I think the DNR swapped my tag w/the North season dates vs the south....
DNR's published dates:
Same dates they also sent with the tags...
SOUTHERN ZONE SEASON DATES:
1st Season: Monday, April 6 – Friday, April 10
2nd Season: Saturday, April 11 – Thursday, April 16
3rd Season: Friday, April 17 – Wednesday, April 22
4th Season: Thursday, April 23 – Wednesday, April 29
5th Season: Thursday, April 30 – Thursday, May 7
NORTHERN ZONE SEASON DATES:
1st Season: Monday, April 13 – Friday, April 17
2nd Season: Saturday, April 18 – Thursday, April 23
3rd Season: Friday, April 24 – Wednesday, April 29
4th Season: Thursday, April 30 – Wednesday, May 6
5th Season: Thursday, May 7 – Thursday, May 14
Need to let them know I think they will issue a correction....
I'm sure they will have to honor the dates they published...
flatlander 01-16-2009, 19:17 The first season dates didn't work out like that.
The ones they sent dont match the north zones first season.
Are all the permits white, mine is ?

Yea I noticed that, it's no doubt an error on their part..
My tag is black & white the way they always are...

Did your also come with the no longer qualify (land owner permit) note ?
I was going to try and change my vacation tonight when I go to work.
The other paper that came with the permit even reads April 6 - 10 but i cant find a number to call to see whats up.
Just looked at mine, says North zone Apr. 14-18 on the permit. Yet on the reverse side of the 2009 Spring Wild Turkey Hunting Information paper included it has the season date as Monday April 13- Friday April 17. Also got the 2009 Free "Property Only Hunting" slip as well.
It looks like the Season information is correct but the dates on the permit are wrong. Maybe they didn't update for last year's leap year? I've never had a Spring Permit so I wouldn't have noticed. Thanks for the heads up.
I wouldn't go and change any vacation just yet...

Yea I got that notice too, but doesn't apply to me.
You will not be able to get a hold of anyone at the DNR till Tuesday morning since Monday is one of those federal holidays I never get....
The DNR is really screwed up!
Looks like the permit dates are wrong. Here is what the hunting and trapping digest says on how they establish the dates.
Turkey
Spring
Youth Turkey the weekend 9 days prior to the opening
of each zones first season.
South Zone: begins on the first Monday in April after April
2 and ends 32 days later. Lengths for each season (in
days) are 5, 6, 6, 7 and 8, respectively.
North Zone: same as South Zone except one week later.
flatlander 01-16-2009, 19:39 That note doesn't apply to me either but the way it reads if you receive it you got a land owner permit.
They are about to give me a high speed come apart ! :D

If they would just tell me which piece of hunting land I own...I'd be glad to take it! :)

ROFLMAO ! I'm with ya.

Some people dont have weekends off. :p
Christine 01-17-2009, 16:02 I thought my tag dates were weird. I thought maybe I screwed up when I applied.
Glad this was posted.
Guys I think I have figured out where our IDNR has screwed up.
The dates on the permits are wrong. They used last years dated (2008 ).
That is why they are ALL off by one day.
I have my turkey 2008 & 2009 spring wild turkey hunting information sheet. The date are right on both of those, just like the web site.
I think it is just wrong on the permits. The date that are on our permits are the 2008 dates.
Our permit are for the northern zone & they are wrong too.
Looks like we will have to wait to see what the DNR wants to do to fix this major screw up.
Sir harry otto......good catch, on finding this mess up !!;)
Guys I got a reply from one of the heads at the IDNR, John Buhnerkempe. I sent him a e-mail this morning telling him what all we have found out here & forwarded him a link to here.
Here is his reply to me & he passed it on to a few other DNR guys =
Lynn:
It does look like the Department may not have changed the dates in the software that prints out the spring turkey permits. Rule of thumb for figuring the spring turkey dates is as follow:
South Zone begins on the first Monday in April after April 2 and ends 32 days later. Lengths for each season (in days) are 5, 6, 6, 7, and 8, respectively.
North Zone same as South Zone except one week later.
Thus, the dates are:
South Zone 1st season April 6-10; 2nd season April 11-16; 3rd season April 17-22; 4th season April 23-29, 5th season April 30 May 7
North Zone 1st season April 13-17; 2nd season April 18-23; 3rd season April 24-29; 4th season April 30 May 6; 5th season May 7-14
I will follow up on this problem tomorrow when everyone returns to the office.
Thanks!
John
