View Full Version : public quail
Does anyone on here ever do any good hunting quail on public ground?
Before the season, i would see quail all of the time at pyramid. . I went out a couple of times once the season started and my dog never even got birdy. Now, granted i did not put in mile upon mile, but i am more than willing to do so.
With only a couple of days left, i'm considering giving it one more shot, and will walk mile after mile if i think i have a chance, so what do you guys think, anyone have experience at this? If i put in the hard work, will i have even a slim chance of being rewarded?

Yes. You won't shoot crap sitting home thinking about it. Just trying makes your odds go up... with them improving mile after mile:p
We have some quail around... but the coveys are spread out... Good Idea though, I may go tomorrow afternoon:)
Birdhunter1 01-09-2009, 12:29 I'd like to say yes as I know Pyramid has had some coveys of quail that I have seen and some of your best places will be on the permit only areas. I have never applied for them and I was told by a CPO that alot of those coveys get shot down by the first few groups that get to go and he wouldn't be surprised if quail don't disappear from Pyramid in a few years.
As for the miles upon miles thing, yup, better start walking. Personally I'm on the fence on if they ought to just not allow quail hunting the next 2 or 3 years just so the populations grow to (maybe) respectable numbers.
FunGusAmonGus 01-09-2009, 16:29 I know for a fact that there is lots of Bobcats there. I have seen them on several occasions. I don't think they help the quail any.
Birdhunter1 01-09-2009, 16:40 5 or 6 years ago I was up there and sat in my truck watching some deer grae and just started counting hawks in the air, I started the truck and took off after I counted about 18 of them. And that's just the ones closeby without getting binoculars out and really looking to see how many were out there.
thanks for the responses guys/gals. i would never have posted the name of a public site like that if it were a big hotspot or something.
it's unfortunate we have such poor upland hunting in this state. i think it really has the potential to be great.
i am definitely a mile walker and have done so for many years with relaitvely little return. at some poijnt it just gets discouraging.
i have applied for the permit areas for two years and not gotten chosen. before the season though, i see plenty of quail in the permit and non permit areas. i'm sure they get beat up pretty good though.
i might give it a try tomorrow
I saw a couple hundred today

In the field with some geese????
duckhunter669 01-09-2009, 21:13 we walked 4 hours sunday after duck hunting and we scraped up 2 .alot of miles for enough to barely make the grease hot.
4 hrs and 2 birds. that's my kind of hunting.........unfortunately.
was it public or private?
i'm not even sure my dog can make 4hrs any more. she's the only reason i'm going though.
It was at MRSP. People, and dogs are getting frustrated. That's why business has been good.
gretchensteele 01-10-2009, 06:48 I've only kicked up maybe a dozen or so in the tromping around I do at pyramid.. I do see a good many fellas there hunting as well.. there just doesn't seem to be as many over there in the new part as one would expect.

Don't sound like your going to walk mile after mile if you can't make 4hrs. Go to MRSP. looks like real nice club..
if only i knew what mrsp was.....Muddy River Shooting Preserve?

Yes Muddy River Shooting Presrve. Give it a shot buy 6 or 10 quail. Hunt clubs are a blast!!!!!!
gretchensteele 01-10-2009, 14:16 Coal Hog - I know Quail Haven is probably closer to you than MRSP.. but MRSP is by far the BEST!!!! You get set up with the guys and heck I miht even show up to snap a photo or two.. I've been known to that down there LOL
Seriously.. I cannot recommend them highly enough.. soon as I get the dates straight from the kiddos.. I'm sending my grandsons down for their first bird hunt.. I wouldn't trust anybody else but Deno and Bird to handle THAT!
i've driven by and know where it's at. i'm really big on wild birds. i hunted for 5 or 6 years in a put and take club. my dog really honed her skills doing that. now, i like the acheivement of getting the wild ones. but, to get my dog back on some birds i think i will give it a try.
how long do they run?
Birdhunter1 01-10-2009, 16:02 We run till about the time Deno is ableto start getting in the fields to prep them to plant, which usually means the early part of March.
