I have never fished cold temperature and have the opportunity to do it but I honestly have no clue how to do it. When it is warm I know when, what, where and how but in cold its another game. The rules have changed.

What advice do you have on fishing cold temperatures (January fishing) and I do not have a boat so I will be on the shore?

I go fishing during the winter months some times. It dipends on what type of body of water you were going to be fishing. At this time of year the fish are normaly syspended in the water column. Wood and rock hold heat from the sun and disperse that heat in the water so fish will hold near it because of the increase in temperature. Good places to fish are standing timber away from the shore line, christmas trees or other brush that is sunk under water away from the bank, rock shoreline especialy if wind is blowing into it. As for bait, I normaly only fish for bass or crappie in the winter months. For crappie I use the normal minnows or your standard crappie jigs. For bass I use jerkbaits, shakey head worms or the craw type baits on shakey heads, a red or shad colored rattle trap type crank bait, crank baits. For the crankbaits a good one is the rapala shad rap in a shad color. It has a tight wigle and you can buy one that dives in alot of different depths. The tight wiggle works better at this time of year. Stick with natural colors for baits. Another thing thats good is use liter line. The water in winter is normaly clearer then other months. I use six pound for everything eccept the crank baits I will use eight or ten. Fish slow and normaly you will ketch a few in one spot. If its a worm day the fish bite pretty good in the winter.

There are several power plant lakes in the state to choose from. when you get the fever in winter head to one of them. If you fish by the hot water discharge you will find more active and more fish.
