It COULD be a damaged pedical which i have seen cause that type of rack too. Lots of times 1.5s have problems shedding because their antlers dont have much weight and sometimes have to basically pull the second antler out. Last year i found a spike with a good half inch of skull on it. There was a small amount of blood in the area also. gretchensteele 12-01-2008, 18:09 his have been like that for several seasons.. I think Critter's been seeing him for at least three years this year.. BAM 12-01-2008, 18:19 his have been like that for several seasons.. I think Critter's been seeing him for at least three years this year.. Cool shot gretchen....Nice quality.....which trail cam did you end up with? He doesn't look 3.5 years old to me, but Im not the best judge... Bigduke 12-01-2008, 18:37 A guy hunting near us shot a buck almost identical to that one. gretchensteele 12-01-2008, 22:37 Cool shot gretchen....Nice quality.....which trail cam did you end up with? He doesn't look 3.5 years old to me, but Im not the best judge... Bam we have one Flat's Homebrews :) I know he doesn't look that old ..but he's an odd fellow, he has a funky gait as well.. I am a little suspicious that he either has some genetic anomalies ( other than just the antlers ) or has a history of some traumatic incident in his youth. Duke this one is a Randolph county resident....:) hmmmm - maybe it is some kind of genetic anomaly... BAM 12-02-2008, 01:07 Kewl, I been wanting to try a homebrew but worried as expensive as they are that someone might take it on public land...Im not happy with my wildview but kinda figured that after being used to alot more megapixel.... The age is one thing I been reading into alot lately after I shot mine~How old do you guys think he is? huntrz 12-02-2008, 06:37 I say 2 1/2, mainly from body size, face, rack. this kind of antler growth is almost always caused from an injury, typically on the opposite side of weird antler growth, if you look closely at this deers right shoulder area it doesn't seem to have much muscle mass, which is what I've seen from deer we've killed with rack abnormalities, the opposite shoulder has very little muscle. My buddy and I both killed bucks like this in the same year. gretchensteele 12-02-2008, 07:21 well, Maybe Critter is confused about how long he's been there, or maybe it was a similar deer he's been seeing the last few years.. I always thought the only real way to age one correctly was by the teeth? BAM 12-02-2008, 07:46 well, Maybe Critter is confused about how long he's been there, or maybe it was a similar deer he's been seeing the last few years.. I always thought the only real way to age one correctly was by the teeth? We had a deer down here east of LOE like that one...You know some hunters only like to harvest deer like that one just to have something different....they think it's more of a challenge... Tell Critter to give em a parkin ticket and then take a pic of the lower jaw G...lol mdoc 12-02-2008, 09:25 I've read the same thing as Hunterz. Usually an injury to the opposite side of the malformed antler. Sometimes a leg injury if I remember right. flatlander 12-02-2008, 12:26 Lets see the other pictures. HarryD 12-03-2008, 07:29 You know your a really good photographer when the deer pose in good light even for your trail cam :D! That is a beautiful shot G. gretchensteele 12-03-2008, 08:37 We've been training him LOL Haryy - I have some bucks from last evening.. but have to run.. will post them this pm! cls74 12-03-2008, 18:16 I'd say he looks like a 2 1/2 as well. Critter could very well have been seeing him for 3 seasons. Forked spike as a 6-7mo., racked 1 1/2 and again at 2 1/2. I've heard the same thing as the rest about the inury resulting in deformed racks. One slight variation I have heard is the deformed antler grows on the opposite side of a rear injury and the same side as a front injury. Not sure how true that is though. Trail cams are on my '09 season list. Nice picture |
