redneck redhead 11-28-2008, 20:36 We just got this Chessie from "G"'s friend in Oklahoma......if ya take a corn cob and throw it, she will run for it and act like she's gonna pick it up, but she won't pick it up and bring it back. Any Tricks or tips to help teach her to do this??

Birdhunter1 11-28-2008, 22:23 If you have a long hallway in your house shut all the doors and throw a ball down the hall so where if she goes and picks it up she has no where to bring it but to you. I have always worked my Brittany's in such a manner where they have no where to go but back to you and they always seem to go get it and bring it back.
I have had one pup that did the same thing, runs to get it but doesnt get it. Might take a wing or two and tie them around it so it has scent and try that route. It may be that teh pup doesn't find the corncob simply because it doesn't have a distinct enough smell or doesn't see it.
FunGusAmonGus 11-28-2008, 23:07 It know the smell becaue my smell is on it and it nibbles at it , it just won't pick it up in its mouth. I'm thinkin about dipping it in bacon grease..

I taught my husky to retrieve a ball in the same manner. If it worked with him, it will work on any retriever.
Try and use something other than a corn cob! Go to rural king and get a canvas wrapped throw dummy. Or, just find what ever toy the dog is having fun with and take it and throw it. And use lots of encouragement and baby talk. Always worked with our dogs..
FunGusAmonGus 11-30-2008, 20:06 Thanks for the replys guys. The kids really have become attached to this pup. Since we had our other little dog stole the kids really miss playing fetch with a dog. They got really excited when they seen we might be able to get Val to start fetching. I switch to a tennis ball and she has started to pick it up but we are just going to have to keep working with her, shes a great dog. Thanks again for your help.
Fun and RNRH..:)
Sounds Great! but where's the pics? :(

Picz ?? What are these.. as you say...picz????:eek::D
If you really want to make this a hunting dog... PM Scott H... He's had Chessies all his life. (His dad helped me train Nes.) Sounds about time to force break if going that route.
If just a pet... don't worry about it... it'll bring stuff back.

scott huschle 12-01-2008, 18:12 Good looking dog Fun! Your pup has one of my favorite features on a chessie, the white patch on the chest. Bird's suggestion in the hallway works well and if your using a tennis ball or canvas bumper try putting alittle vanilla extract for smell. This works well if you have no access to duck or pigeon wings.
And get yourself a good 3ft piece of 2x4 for that hard headed chessie.LOL
FunGusAmonGus 12-01-2008, 19:24 She is kinda bullheaded. The dog house I got her had chickens living in it. I don't know why but there was a certain group of chickens who would not stay in with the other chickens in the big coop and they took over that dog house and stayed in it before we got her. Now since I moved it over where she is at they still want to live in it. I had to lock them in with the other chickens. Then I cleaned it out real good and put fresh straw in it and she still won't go in. I have been putting her in the barn in a small horse trailer filled with straw at night till she gets used to being here. Maybe if i stop doing that she will have to get in that dog house. At least she doesn't attack the chickens, I was worried about that.
scott huschle 12-01-2008, 19:38 Give her alot of attention and praise and she will be fine. 2 of my chessie's would rather lay on the cold concrete then go in their warm house both are 11 yrs old.
Fun I would also start her on a leash for obiedence training (30 min. a night), this will be a big hurdle to clear at this age if your just using as a house pet, once you get over that she will do alot better for you as she gets older. Chessie's are very personal dogs and the more attention you give them the more they will want to please for the attention.
