Dude, you need to open your eyes, there are ducks everywhere.
fowlbehavior 11-24-2008, 08:57 There are no ducks in Southern IL. Everyone should stay at home til atleast Monday. I will be happy to give you a new report then.
Chris Schoentag 11-24-2008, 10:57 I'm with fowlbehavior. There really are no birds here yet and everyone should just catch up on sleep until they show.;) I'll go out anyway just for fresh air and to get in the habit of setting a spread again. I will give a report on Monday if I don't decide to take the day off and get some more fresh air, exercise, and practice calling.:)
fireduck 11-24-2008, 11:07 I heard rumor as of yesterday afternoon there are already boats sitting on ramps in line in some of the popular spots across SIL.
Those people are insane;)
Hope some ducks finally show up so there week long wait isnt for nothing.
I'm still undecided to deer of duck hunt??? Cruised through Baldwin on Sat. and the resident geese were the only birds there???

DetectDave 11-24-2008, 11:45 I am so ready for the weekend. After not hunting at all, last year due to my new knees, I can't wait. Every year we buy something new just to screw with the older club members in the pit next to us. This year we bought that robo from Sportsmansguide that doesn't have spinning wings but has 40 LED lights that flash simultaneously to simulate wing flash. I can't wait until just before shooting time to light that baby up and wait for the bichin to begin..LOL That's not harassing our elders is it?
fireduck 11-24-2008, 11:54 You better watch out, your will be the elder some day that the younguns with messing with.
DetectDave 11-24-2008, 12:00 I think I already am..LOL
Chris Schoentag 11-24-2008, 13:50 It's only harrassing if you do it with the intent to harrass..............right?
Seriously though, post on how the LED decoy works. I've seen them but never thought to try it.
DetectDave 11-24-2008, 14:13 I'm thinking on the foggy rainy days, we might actually have something useful. I'll give ya a report.
Here is the IDNR count from Nov. 18th.

Looks like the current numbers are a little below the five year average.

If that thing gets accidentally shot, it would be an accident.....
Really:D
DetectDave 11-25-2008, 14:24 LOL....now ya know we couldn't allow acidents like that to happen. Besides as lodge chef, I have plenty of ways of getting even..LOL
Smokey Mc Pot 11-25-2008, 15:42 you do no that goose hunting is open all year this year from thanksgiving to febuary check the digest peeps if you dont beleive me but i think ima goose hunt alot more
lifestudent55 11-25-2008, 17:54 LOL....now ya know we couldn't allow acidents like that to happen. Besides as lodge chef, I have plenty of ways of getting even..LOL
Dave, I know where I can get some Bhut Jolakia (http://www.nmsu.edu/%7Eucomm/Releases/2007/february/hottest_chile.htm) chillies if you're needing something for some revenge. I understand in India where they like it really hot they only use a little sliver of this in a large pot of soup. An imperceptible amount in someone's bbq might get their attention.
DetectDave 11-25-2008, 19:18 I like the way ya think Life. One of my friends down here ground up a bunch of habanero's into dust for me that is pretty stout..LOL
lifestudent55 11-25-2008, 19:40 Bhuts are twice as hot as habaneros. Think napalm only hotter. The hottest habaneros are about 500,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU) while the Bhuts are over 1,000,000. They can literally do some physical damage.
platinumwindow99 11-26-2008, 17:56 Today Survey Duck Number down 10,000 each at Carlyle and Rend.. We missed them again
I have a great idea, let's open the season on Christmas for I do not want to shoot any birds!!!!!
lifestudent55 12-17-2008, 17:24 DDave, one of the guys at work brought me a couple bhut jolakias today. Need any revenge chilies? I'm going to try planting some of the seeds to see how well they do.
I took a little scouting trip around the north end of Carlyle Lake today and saw very few birds. Most of the northend is frozen, where there is open water some ducks are using. Did see a few groups of geese going out to feed, but not great numbers. I see that the greater Chicago area is under a winter storm warning, hopefully that will develop and get some of the thousands of geese off the warm water lakes and out of the cornfields and head this way.
I did see a few more birds here locally today at one of our blinds by Highland, we managed four mallards and two gadwall, but had to break ice to get the birds in close. Hope mother nature helps us out.
Smokey Mc Pot 12-17-2008, 20:45 i saw abt 400 birds trying to land in a local feild today man it was a sight to see idk if there were sum on the ground it may of been black birds but the ones in the sky were def. not black birds
scott huschle 12-17-2008, 21:47 Monday & Tuesday was migration days for Canadians. Waves and waves of geese coming down interstate 57, with alot stopping around the Mattoon-Charleston area. From what I'm hearing around the Belleville area geese moved into the Lake Christine area the past couple days as well.
Today I saw several flocks southbound, early tis AM and late this PM. Maybe they heard the weather forecast for northern Illinois, 6-10 inches of snow and cold. That may be just what the Dr. ordered. :D
scott huschle 12-18-2008, 21:23 Lets hope ISP!!
RiverBottomBowHunter 12-19-2008, 07:33 ISP,
Did you see anything on the north side of the walkins? We have a couple corn fields we can hunt in that area and was wondering if its even worth the scouting trip, compared to some other spots.
RBBH
We've made a few trips to carlyle recently and have always seen tons of birds. But they were not wanting to work for us on the public spots and lake a few times. IF you have private land or a good spot, there will definately be birds there. Worth a shot for the way everything has been around here this year.
RBBH,
It was slow near Hitogi yesterday, hunting private property a flooded cornfiled, did kill a few mallards but usually in this area we get our limit. The numbers are down and the ice is covering most of the area, we even had ice eaters working and open water, but the ducks appeared to be educated. Did see more geese than previous trips, and saw some using dry cornfields on the trip there but not enough to rig out. The northern Illinois forecast show more light snow and blowing snow Saturday evening and Sunday with wind chills in the -10-20 range so maybe the waterfowl will get tired of the snow and move this way....
Hunted Highland today and duck numbers are still bad but getting more geese everyday. Got mixed bag of teal, mallards and shovelers with two geese. But had to open the ice up in the early morning, otherwise we were solid with 1/2 to 1 " on ice.
Keep your eyes north...:rolleyes::rolleyes::D
gretchensteele 12-19-2008, 18:21 slim pickins at pyramid this am... very few moving.. some in the open fields... but not the usual numbers..
heck it looked darn near deserted...
RiverBottomBowHunter 12-22-2008, 08:58 We went sat morning. We seen quite a few mallards. Being the rookies we are, we had a lot of looks just couldn't get them to finish. We were hunting a corn field along the Kask. River. I did notice a lot of geese everywhere there is open water. Planning a tuesday hunt, see if they stay in the area.
Good luck
RBBH
Seen alot last night

Bam I am seeing an increase in the goose numbers here finally, but the ducks numbers around are not good. The geese are moving early and are very cautious, light on the calling and a little flagging has worked, we are banging a few as are several other guys around town. The sunny days are hurting us a bit as well as the south wind. It is worth the time to get out there, can't kill em on the couch..;)
