Snapping turtles, how about a water moccasin ? I know a couple guys up around Central IL that do but only when they are drunk. LOL bdw 05-11-2007, 08:07 Any youns guys do any hoggin for cats.I moved up here from louisiana 4 years ago and can't find anybody dumb enough to go wit me.:D I always wanted to try it. If i didn't chicken out. Are there any good places to go around Herrin? What time of year is best to go? DetectDave 05-11-2007, 11:33 I bet the Big Muddy would be a fine spot to go when the waters down. What about Beaucoup Creek north of Murphy? It seems like it might hold some whiskered fellas! Clear Creek over by Anna -Jonesboro would be another one as well. JDawg 05-11-2007, 11:48 I believe there are some good hoggin spots on Rend lake along the highway somewhere. I've been told this by a couple different people, but I've never been up there myself. Supposedly there are some big flatheads that hide in some undercuts that are pretty easy to get to. Red 05-11-2007, 12:25 yes just off the highway there is an old road that is underwater and the concrete slabs are buckled and have really good spots for the flatheads. There are some pools that are really deep in this area so becareful as not to get into a fish you cant handle cause you will be pulled deep  There are also some very big aligator snappers in this area and a few people have had arms broken by them while hoggin in this place. Infact the owner of a very good catfish bait hoggs in this area and writes articles about it alot. Hogging is a very popular pasttime back home in Iowa along the missouri river and yes its dangerous but is also very fun to do. Smart thing to do would be wear a leather glove on the hand you are reaching in with it will cut down on the missing fingers ;) if ya get into a 30+ flathead. Fish of 30+ are very common in this area at Rend Lake. Have fun guys and let me know how it goes. Bob 05-11-2007, 12:30 There is a video Called Okie Noodling you can rent to watch what it is all about. http://www.okienoodling.com/film/ Red 05-11-2007, 12:39 I always wanted to try it. If i didn't chicken out. Are there any good places to go around Herrin? What time of year is best to go? Cats are very territorial fish and if you shove something infront of them in their hole you will get one. So really any time of year is good. Red 05-18-2007, 02:31 There is an article in my online magazine that is about hoggin' at Rend Lake this month DetectDave 05-21-2007, 05:11 If I was to start dating again, it would have to be one of those gals on that website..LOL lifestudent55 05-21-2007, 20:20 If I was to start dating again, it would have to be one of those gals on that website..LOL I have a feeling even those girls would say you're a might gamey there Dave. :D DetectDave 05-22-2007, 05:31 Can't blame a fella for trying'...LOL lifestudent55 05-22-2007, 09:39 I reckon you're right there Dave. You never know, a gal that'd get in there and wrassle a catfish as big as she is might go for you. Somehow I can't see myself getting in the water and wrestling a critter that's big enough to do serious damage to me. I've had them do enough damage (stabbing my hands and stuff like that) on land without giving them an advantage. Red 05-26-2007, 13:20 anyone interested in goin hoggin at Rend Lake? I know of a few places that hold some big boys, had a buddy get a 45lb flathead tied to his waste while we went after another that was in the same hole. we turned around and the fish was draggin him around like a bobber on the top of the water :D If anyone is interested ya can send me a pm and we can get together and get some big boys. duckhunter669 05-29-2007, 21:38 Let me know when ya plan on going. It seems like all the good stuff comes around ball season. With 2 to take to games and practice and work seems all i do is run.Let me know ahead of time and i'll try to make plans. Red 05-29-2007, 22:29 most likely towards the end of the month but i will keep ya posted |
