This is an easy recipe that can be done in the crock pot.

peel, core and chop up apples. Enough to just about fill the crock pot.

Turn on high and cook overnight.

In the morning stir in sugar mixture:
3 cups sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground gloves

reduce heat to low and cook the rest of the day.

spoon out of crock pot with sloted spoon or use stainer.

Mash up or put in blender.

can or freeze.

Mmmmmmmm!

I'm going to have to try that. We've got several apples that aren't really good enough for pies and crisps but would be perfect for apple butter. I've got a 5 gallon bucket like that to go through plus more on the trees. (Dad blamed yellow jackets. (@&*&@*#$^^#)

The apples that I used were mainly the ones left after they got picked over from the tree.

You can also substitute apple sauce for apples if you dont have time to peel and core. But whats the fun in that.

If ya want a slightly diff flavor, throw in 25 unwrapped caramels or a half jar of caramel ice cream topping (good stuff) and tell me what ya think about that.

hey huntrz.. try stirring in some praline ice cream topping..

Isn't that just the easiest way to make small batches?? Beats the heck out of all that hard work..

I like to throw in red hots too :)

It's funny you should mention that Gretchen. My Grandma Lindley didn't have cinnamon one year so she used red hots. It was good, but tasted more like red hot flavored applesauce. Being one who has always liked red hots, I probably ate more than my share.

Mine came out too sweet and syrupy so I added a bunch more apples this morning and cooked it down some more. I put it in the cast iron to finish it off. I used cinnamon, cloves, allspice, and nutmeg in mine.

I talked to my aunt and she said that to make Amish apple butter you just use apples and cider, nothing else, and cook it slowly till it's almost black.

This has been my first try at making apple butter and my first try at canning. Both were successful.

Got er done. Here are the fruits of my labors for the past couple days. I have a 7th jar of apple butter but decided to not seal it and started using it right away.

Thanks Dave. Can't fix scratch biscuits tomorrow morning. Gotta go to the doc in the morning and I'm not about to pig out on homemade biscuits right before stepping on the scales. :(
