Got to spend a couple hours in the area Sunday evening. You cannot go onto the Kincaid Mound sight itself but there is alot of cool places nearby. Its a good ideal to ask permission before going on the local farmers land also. Most of them are fairly nice and more than likely will let you roam around if you ask.

Just at dusk, getting almost too dark to see I found this nice point which looks to be Archaic, much older than the woodland natives who built the mounds. Someone had been cleaning out a drainage ditch with a track-hoe so I jumped down in it and started walking up it looking at the sides for flint. The point was over 2 feet deep half sticking out of the bank.Several people had already been there looking by all the tracks that were there but they missed that one. :)

Looter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! J/k Some people think that way though. Strange how peoples perceptions change. They are not always for the better. Nice find!!!

I was talking to an archaeologist last year at the ft massac
artifact show and he told me they did a dig to make sure they didn't cover anything up with the new platform and parking lot. He said they found two burials. One was an ordinary mississippian burial, and the other was a 20 something year old male, dated to 3000bp (before the mounds), with his hands tied behind his back, decapitated, and a killer white spearpoint in his chest. There are always lots of pictures of thier digs at that show.

Just a little update on this site. I was there just yesterday. There is an active dig going on now. Chatted with a cluster of students from SIU. They let me walk up to the dig very close to the visitor viewing area. Fascinating stuff. Used to go there many years ago before they opened it up - always had to get permission to go back there. Lots of stories about "Black Bottoms" when I was a kid. Locals used to make moonshine down there during prohibition times. I took a few pics and vids - will post when have time.
