Well the other day I went to Greaney's Guns Inc. and actually held a Ultra Slug Hunter and kind of hated the design of it. I did consder a Rossi slug gun, but if I get something with iron sights I think I'll just get an 870 Express 20GA combo. Anyone have any other recomendation for a 20GA slug gun?

P.S. Greaney's son was there and he said that a decent length rifled choke tube as good as a rifled barrel for hunting.

That is a big debate on the rifed choke vs. rifled barrel. Me personally I don't think the choke can perform as well as the full rifled.

As for a gun, I would seriously look at the Mossberg 500. I own 2 right now, and have owned many of them. They are of the same quality (and this is debated as well...) as the 870's. I own an 870 and love it, but ya can'tbeat the price of the mossberg barrels. I just bought the fully rifled, cantilever barrel scope combo for my Mossy 500 12ga for $161 out the door. I actually prefer my mossy's over the Remington, and I am a big time Rem lover. I like the thumb safety on the top, I like the slide release position better as well. For the money, you would be hard pressed to find anything better than a Mossberg in my book.

What specifically did you hate? Not a whole lot of "design" in a single shot!

Don't give up on the ultra-slug gun, I've had one for seven years and have never missed with this gun.

The weight was part of it, too much front weight, but also for use with a scope the hammer is annoying. The feel of it was weird to me. Also, I know from experience a rifled choke tube can be just as good as a rifled barrel from my brother's BPS with rifled tube, he can tack drive with it granted the tube is a bit long.

For Mossberg I liked the SSI-one, but the rifled shotgun is only in 12GA.

Cool gun (SSI) just not as practical for the money... With the Rem 870 or Mossy 500, you can have many different guns by just switching barrels. You can even buy the Muzzleloader setup for them and make them legal muzzleloaders!

Wolf they make a steel bar to go in the buttstock to add weight to the rear and it balances well, if it is out it is very barrel heavy. The Ultra slug hunter is more accurate than the Hastings paradox 12 gauge I had in the 870, recoil is next to nothing.

For the hammer you really need the hammer spur, it makes a night and day difference.

If you can get it in time, get a single shot H&R in a rifle (like a .243) then send it to H&R and have them fit a slug barrel to it. They can do a rifle to a shotgun but not the other way around. Then for less than $500 you can have a superaccurate slugger and a accurate enough centerfire rifle.

Well even worse today at Rural King I saw a CVA Wolf and liked it, think I might be back to Muzzleloader idea, they are just too tempting. So while that happens I'll just use our 16ga SxS until I can get a 20ga SxS.

Did you see the CVA at the show for $89!

If you're game for a single shot gun why not just get the ML??? A good ML will outperform a slugger.

Which one did you get, theplain blue with black stock, blue with camo stock or nickel plated with camo stock? Also, how far do you have it sighted at, and do you use scope or open (guessing open because you needed that gold dollar for those spare CVA sights back when I got my hat).

Blue and Black. I'm simple... It is sighted in at 100... The Power Belts don't group well out of mine, and I can't afford to try all the different ones. The XTP's however shoot great, so that is what I use w/ 100 g of Pyro pellets. I shoot open sights... and am happy to do so.;)

Powerbelts don't seem to get as good of reviews as regular sabot and .45 pistol bullet combos do, what gr of XTP do you use I was thinking of using 250gr .451 pistol bullets with some T/C magnum sabots from midway usa only $40 for it all (pyrodex pellets would be bought at a store otherwise it's $20 extra shipping per shipping weight pound of hazardous material).

Out of curiosity, how much did he want for the ultra slug hunter? I'm looking for either a single shot slug gun, a slug barrel for my mossberg 500 20 gauge, or a muzzleloader. While I wouldn't mind a slug barrel for the mossberg...if it's gonna cost around the same money...why not get another gun?? :)

I think it was $230, maybe less, but he had about three defferent ones. The idea of having a slug only gun isn't bad. Rossi makes single shot slug guns too that might not be bad, they have iron sights and are lighter (by 1 lb. though).
