Just read where a person died at Lil Grand Canyon.:(
I hear these stories every so often. Last one I heard about was at 'Devils Stand Table', when kids were jumping across.
I just wonder how many people take the signs seriously at the parks? There are signs telling of dangers and such, yet people don't pay attention...

I read about that in the Southern.. evidently he went over the edge at one the look out points...hadn't return from hiking by 1;30am..so lukcily the family knew where he was going..
Once again good idea to tell someone roughly what patch of woods you will be in.. so the can tell where to start the search..

Truely sad... You think of this happening in places like the desert out west or the Grand Canyon or up in the mountains. I guess it can happen anywhere. Several years back a guy from out of state fell off Inspiration Point at Pine Hills and survived but they did know who he was for several months till after he came out of a coma. Heres where he fell from.

Exposure can be a nasty thing.. especially if you are compromised already from a fall and have traumatic injuries.. it doesn't take long to get hypothermic at night.. in far warmer temps than you would expect.. and during the extreme heat.. it doesn't take long to cook.. many moons ago.. I took a wilderness rescue class for the needed CEU's I was amazed at many of the things that can so quickly cause troubles in an uncontrolled environment.. and I thought was pretty savvy and safe in the woods etc..
hmmmm we need a wilderness survival seminar.. sponsored by SILO ....
Might be a good midwinter excuse for a get together..

I just got a Daily Egyptian and it had his obit. in there. He was very young and a local kid from a big family from Makanda. Sad, these are the things and places I used to go when I was at that age.

Unfortunately there is about one death or serious injury per year down at Little Grand Canyon, it is not a place to be ballsy.
I usually know when it happens before it hits the news as the DNR, sheriffs dept. and an ambulance or two go flying by my parents house on the way down there.
I Just really don't understand why some people can't take heed when the signs say 'caution'.
When the wife and I walked the trail down at lil grand canyon in the fall. I seen how steep the cliffs were and thought, if someone got into those loose leafs they would just slide right off...

My understanding is the kid from Alton fell near the Piasa Bird area. His Father and Grandfather was/is a local firefighter.
WOW, having to go to the scene of your own family member!
Our Prayers are with the family.
