View Full Version : St Clair County 5th Season HIGHCOUNTRY 05-01-2007, 11:53 Anyone had any luck in St Clair County so far this season. I got 5th season St Clair and I'm looking forward to it this Thursday. I had 1st season Madison County and it sucked. Bob 05-01-2007, 12:13 I hunted St. Clair Fri - Sun, and we heard gobblers every morning. The birds are spending more time in the woods now. Not as much in the fields. We saw birds every day, but no shooters close enough. I suggest patience now. If you know there are birds in the area, be prepared to sit it out and they will come eventually. Where are you planning on hunting? (PM me if you want.) The weather is supposed to be rough the next few days. I got 5th season in Madison, and will be up there over the weekend. HIGHCOUNTRY 05-01-2007, 12:39 I'm mainly hunt timber and no fields. I'll be in New Athens and off the Kaskaskia River... HIGHCOUNTRY 05-03-2007, 16:14 Got in this morning in the rain and had two respond to the owl hoot. Eased in and set up the blind to find out we were right below the rost. (too close) One few down and went the other way. About 70 yards away another one was still on the rost so we stayed there and after 2 hours of calling and him gobbling back and forth he would not come any closer. So after 2hrs in the blind I eased out and found there was a pond in between him and us so we eased out and will try it again in the morning.... C130NAV 05-03-2007, 20:22 I hate when ponds get in the way! Was the forest loud today? Bob 05-03-2007, 20:23 I saw over a dozen birds on my way home today. At least one was a shooter huntemall 05-04-2007, 20:46 Bein seein two strutters on the south side of the New Athens bridge in that powerline, ive seen them several times now. I dotn know if youve already killed out or not but I saw them again today around eleven. Brad 05-07-2007, 13:34 my cousin shot a bearded hen on the north side of the road by the bridge in those power lines 3rd season i think and my other cousin shot a nice tom there just saturday. may be the same birds but not sure sincee he only heard the one gobble Bob 05-07-2007, 13:43 I think that's the same flock. I see em all the time too. I've had to stop in the highway to let em cross before. HIGHCOUNTRY 05-07-2007, 21:21 I hunted there 2 days in a row now and I haven't seen any birds there yet. Season coming to an end. I'm trying up the river in the morning. Plus I have to check my trot line. Hopefully I'll have some pictures... huntemall 05-07-2007, 21:30 Ive always seen them there later in the morning. I have several trot line out between Baldwin and New Athens and have been tearing them up. Several twenties and a couple thirties not to mention all the good fryers. HIGHCOUNTRY 05-07-2007, 21:36 Wow. I set one out today after hunting and I'm going to check it after I hunt tomorrow. What kind of bait do you use? huntemall 05-07-2007, 21:47 We've been using cut shad, shad guts, and shrimp. Catchin them mainly in the backwaters. Around ten to fifteen foot of water. Catchin some real nice ones on jugs as well with about three foot leaders.Good Luck! |
