For Halloween, I'd like to take pictures of some of the spookiest places in southern Illinois. Now, I know the Old Slave House -- that's an easy one. I'm looking for some of the harder ones, though. The lesser known ones. Any suggestions south of 64, preferably south of 154, are welcome!
I never been, but the haunted barn isn't 2 far from me....

I've read about a place just below Chester that the steamboats would bury bodies. Don't know where it is though.
I also remember hearing of a Indian burial location near camp ondesonk. Been years since I've been there. But it was along a old train track path.
Another spot might be in Herrin, the massacre site.

Gretchen, I'm thinking about shooting a couple of the cemeteries in C'dale this weekend while also visiting the Pig Out.
Did you see my write up about Waverly in my Calpurnius blog?

Hmmm. I hadn't thought of the Massacre, and I live in Herrin. The mine sites have been stripped over and over. There's the march sites, and then the actual massacre site. Hmmm. I may well have to consider that.

I have some friends who live in Evansville, IN that I'm trying to talk into making a weekend of it.. they love to photograph the weird, haunted , etc..
They will be here for the benefit I think to photograph it..
Bill does lots of work for suicide girls...
There is a cave at Giant City that a friend of mine will never return to. He swears he heard the sound of a strange animal growling as he left the place. He had heard a legend that if the animal makes the growl sound that you will have cursed luck immediately after that. He had a major personal catastrophe that night and he believes. I tried to get him to take me there. He gave me simple directions but flat out refuses to go back.
There are a lot of unkept cemeteries in the area that have an eerie feeling about them by virtue of their locations. There is one at the intersection of Rocky Comfort Road and Little Grassy Road that not many take notice of in the woods just off the north side of that intersection. Another one that is difficult to find I believe finally had a sign placed at the bottom of the wooded hill off route 3 is called "Boon Cemetery", built by one of its occupants, Benningsen Boon, a distant relative of Daniel Boone and the first white man born in Jackson county, he was the Postmaster, constable, and doctor of Big Hill, which is now I think known as Fountain Bluff in Gorham, Illinois. His father, William Boon, was the captain of the Illinois Rifleman who served under Andrew Jackson in the Battle of New Orleans, which, consequently, is exactly why and how Jackson County got its name. Boon Cemetery is very unkept with trees growing all around and even through the few tombstones there. I like the fact that its so difficult to find because it keeps vandals away. Take route 3 south from 149. When you pass the turn off into Gorham the paved shoulder in the road ends. Park there and look to your right and you should be able to see the cemetery sign at the bottom of the hill. It's a rough climb. Don't know how they carried caskets up that hill.
You have to get permission to go there, but there is a place called Sunset Haven, an old psychiatric hospital that sits abandoned now on SIU campus. Look it up. I've been inside and it's eerie.
These are the obvious ones. Scroll down to Weird Egypt.

Ask around in your neighborhood for small hidden cemetery's. You'd be surprised what will come up. You might even find some single tombstones in unlikely places.
