These are from a friend in Mn, same area I will be bear hunting this Sept.

2nd hint - To bad these cool birds no longer live in IL, been about 50 years from what I read.

The person that names him first wins................................a pat on the back.
Or maybe we can talk Bob into a SILO hat ??????? :D
If not I'll Pay Pal him the $10 for it.

RUFFED GROUSE!!!

I win a cool hat:p

We used to hunt em back in PA. Hard as hell to hit, and scare the crap outta ya when they take off. Gotta be REAL QUICK.

Excellent pic.

When they drum like that it is such a weird sound. It sounds like a bug in your ear or something.

NOTE: (Inside joke from another thread;))But some of you folks don't know the ways of the mountains real well...:D

I have another bird for you, Bob. LOL !

Well if you were a real IL native chances are a lot better you wouldn't have known.

SA, not speaking Spanish either.

I feel bad for being a Dumas and screwing up FLATLANDERS contest.

Just so you know....

BACK ON TOPIC...

I know those birds have preferred drumming logs... I suppose your pal knew this was that grouses log?

I think they tried stocking them in the seventies in the Shawnee National Forest but they just wouldnt stick. I believe we traded Wisconsin or Michigan some turkeys for the grouse. Looks like we got screwed on that one. They are very neat birds I hear them every year in June on my fishing trip to Lake of the Woods in Canada. When they drum it sounds like someone trying to start an old tractor that just wont turn over. Anyone else have any info about the IDNR's attempt to stock them.

Doesn't surprise me that they didn't make it in SNF.
Pheasant cant seem to make it in this part of the state either.

I can get a link to audio of grouse drumming but thought I would just wait until my buddy gets one on video best of both worlds, audio & video.
