I to would be tempted to saw open that tree . They are still making it though and its best to do it once it starts to cool off maybe right after the first frost. I remember helping as a kid we would notch the tree down low and light cotton rags on fire and pat them out till they where just smoldering and stick them in the notch to smokem out. Nothing beats wild honey!!

I know theres a problem with the bees. I know the bees are endangered. But we used to look at this something like the way Bob looks at hogging catfish. Its too much work and not enough people do it to harm the bee population to warrant the necessity of not disturbing a hive to gain the honey. In other words there used to be enough other hives out there that offing one wouldn't make a difference. Today in this day of endangered bees I would please ask everyone to restrain themselves from disturbing a wild bee hive in anyway.

I had no intentions of trying to get the honey, the tree it's in is huge and looks like it fell over during some of our flooding this year, it's leaning against another tree and right on the edge of the creek dropoff, dangerous situation. this is just down the hill from one of our clover plots, so I guess it would be "Clover Honey" like the store bought ones advertise. About 6 years ago I found a honey bee hive exposed in late October, I don't know if they got knocked out of original and were trying to make a new one or what, but it was doomed.

That looks like a great trip.
