Went fishing yesterday in mascoutah with ebarlow. We both caught some bass and I even got a crappie. We were walking around the lake and man, we seen 6 water moccasins. One of them had to be about 4 ft long and was at leat 2/1/2ft in girth maybe more...... We walked along the jetti inbetween the two lakes and the place had them all over. Was pretty crazy.
But its all worth it for the fish right?lol....

Water moccasins (AKA Cottonmouths) are pretty rare in IL, and the further south you go the better your chance. I doubt you saw 6 of a rare snake in one spot.

Probably just water snakes.

I've seen Cotton Mouths, Mocassins and Timber Reattlers down in the Shawnee. Check out this link about the snake migration!

Water moccasins can be seen down here of course we are alot more southern than alot of you all..... They have a cat like eye and a triangle head. They also have pits on their head. They are kinda chunky like and then there tail is pretty skinny. They like to stay around the water and swampy areas because they eat mostly fish and frogs. There are also tons of other snakes though that can be confused with the water moccasin. The brown water snake being one. Those snakes usually are skinner and take off quick. Water moccasins are more agressive. Sometimes they will strike or chase you depending on how threatened it feels. They are called the cottonmouth because they keep there mouth wide open and it is white inside. The babies are lighter in color than the adults. The adults are like browish/black.

CRAB is getting bad with snakes it seems like and we even seen several up at REND while camping. They love those rocks around the shoreline. LOE doesn't seem as bad, but I might be talking to soon...We usually have a couple on our land every year but nothing drastic.

My neighbor killed a copperhead on his land. He hit it with the tractor when he was mowing and took it over to crab visitors center. They told him that he was not suppose to kill it....Like he could help it??? And another copperhead was caught on the south side of the lake last year I heard.

They also told us that Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever was rare in Illinois but I managed to get it, and it can kill you. Just be careful , because they are out there. Watch when you reach with your hands and when you step over logs. Step up on it and then step down instead of just stepping over it. They like to lay down by them and then feel threatened when you step right in front of there face!

I've seen birds grab a shed skin and hang it out of a bird house to deter other predators/
