my huntin' partner & I roosted some birds last night, and they couldn't have been in a better place! they roosted on a ridge where the creek swung in close to the field edge and also had a strip of timber about 25 yards wide jutting out into the field from ridge, it was getting light a little sooner than I anticipated and we were worried about crossing the field, so we hugged the edge and got in without disturbing the birds by circling around and set the decoys within 100 yards of the birds where they could see them from their roost, we were set up in the finger, sat back and waited...
a dog barking got the first gobble, once the hens woke up one of them was gettin' fired up on the roost yelpin'& cuttin', so I started talkin' back to the boss hen, p#*@d her off!, the gobblers were choking on their own enthusiasm, gobbling their fool heads off! we sat back and just let them do their own thing throwing in occasional yelps & cuts so they wouldn't forget about us. when they flew down they headed out into the field, there were 3 gobblers a jake and about 5 hens, they hung up about 60 yards down the edge and we got to watch one of them breed a hen while the 2 other gobblers circled the fornication fest rootin' him on! when he was finished one of the gobblers broke from the group and started down the edge towards our decoys, strutting the whole way with the other birds following about 40 yards behind, nobody in a hurry, if we were going to pull off a double we would have to let the first white headed strutter go by, I motioned to my partner who was about 10 yards to my right to let him pass since the others were coming, the other bids came in with one in front of me in full strut, I squeaked out a sic yelp to get him to stick his head up, and my partner was readin' my mind, we both pulled the trigger at the same time dropping 2 long beards in there tracks, we sat there for a second in shock (like I always do) then looked at each other both hooted "A DOUBLE!" we made a makeshift tripod out of a log and a few forked sticks to get some "KillScenePics"
what a hunt! I'm still shakin'!
