My Dad used to hunt skunk for the fur. At one time it was used extensively once it was dyed. He said they would use a dog to find a den which the skunks would holeup in when it got cold out. Once the den was found they would use a shovel to dig them out. A skunk back in the day was worth about $2.00 if you found one with a really wide stripe it could be up to $5.00. It might take 2-3 hours to dig them out but if there where 7-8 in the it would be extra money which went a long way back in the 40's. He said one time they dug into a den and there was 23 skunks in it. He said it was a little more than they bargained for.
