Have any of you here used this round? Seems like a decent varmint round with better deer killing power than the .243 Win. also ballistics are slightly better than .243 Win. Also, has anyone compared them in use?

InIt2Live 07-17-2008, 08:36 unless you plan on keeping/selling the hides of the varmints, then you would be better suited to use a .270. If you hand load, you can buy bullets alll the way down to 90grains for varmint, or buy factory loads in the 130-150 range for deer. You won't find alot of factory .25-06 ammo at stores like walmart! The 25-06 is still a great caliber, but why not have something that can go all the way from varmints up to moose! The .270 is tried and true, flat, fast, and hard hitting. Same cartridge as the 30 cal series, necked own to a .27 bullet. I own a .270, and that thing is a tack driver. Own a few 30-06, and they are great guns, but I seem to enjoy the .270 a little more. I have gone prarie dog huntin' with it and just blasted the little critters out to 500 yards. The .25-06 has a place, but its deffinately not in my gun safe... Birdhunter1 07-17-2008, 15:50 Excellent caliber with more energy and slightly flatter than a .243, but you can get a .243 from many manufacturers with a heavy barrel and laminated stock making it more accurate than most factory 25-06 configurations that do not come with heavy varmint barrels and such. Each will kill a coyote out ot 600 yards with the right bullet. wolfgang 07-17-2008, 16:53 unless you plan on keeping/selling the hides of the varmints, then you would be better suited to use a .270. We own a .270 a Remington 760 (now 7600) pump action rifle, good gun if you don't plan on using a bipod and it's sighted at 200 yards (could probably do another 50 yards with no major drop though) with 130gr PSP rounds. I looked at reloading dies for .243, there's specialty dies made for match grade reloading ($100) down to regular ones ($25). |
