FunGusAmonGus 07-13-2008, 18:55 or green with envey. I'd like a setup like this. Not much but just enough...

I kinda figured you were stoppin' to take a pic of that place, I'm with you, that would be plenty for me, Robin commented about the windmill and solar panels when we drove by there tonight.
FunGusAmonGus 07-13-2008, 19:02 the location ain't bad either...;):D
Noticed a windmill the other day over north of dierbergs and 64, by the new Harley store. Don't know whose it was though.
To talk with someone with the setup you took a pic of, could really give some valuable info! Some of the problems, and shortcuts, and such would come to light. Saving the next person some unnecessary expences and allowing them to make theirs as efficient as possible.
Birdhunter1 07-13-2008, 19:04 You and me both Fungus.
Been watching the Greensburg show on the planet green channel. Some of the building matl's, and practices are amazing. Personally I think I would like to have a log cabin style home someday. Along with the accomadations of those in the picture first posted.
gretchensteele 07-13-2008, 19:23 Every time I drive past there I wish it were mine....
InIt2Live 07-13-2008, 19:37 That is more than enough power for that place from the looks of it. Has anyone researched here if the power companies will pay for part of it? I know alot of places are offering up to 60% of the cost of the whole setup. If the power company offers to pay for part, you could get off relatively cheap, and make that money back within a couple of years.
Ron I have been following that show as well (though they haven't had a new episode since 2 weeks ago) Cool show! I had to add to my cable package just to get that channel. I have learned alot from that show, as well as the other shows on that channel.
Gretch, it is like a TV version of treehugger.com (and yes I frequent treehugger.com, I know some of you anti hippies are reading!:D)
As they say - "Git-R-Done"
Northern Tool has quite a bit of the alternative energy solutions.

Its on right now with a new show, I dont know the series info off hand.....I thought new shows were every sunday.
FunGusAmonGus 07-13-2008, 20:03 a friend of mine bought some property that had a great location for a large wind mill. Everything was just right for it and I checked into setting one up and the "gov." state and fed. will give you insentives to build one but it would take about 23- 25 years to get all your money back on the one we where looking to build. I factored in everything from taxes to set up to intrest rates. This was not a little backyard project. Its not as easy as most people think to get up and running. I had tones of charts and wind maps and records. This is the tower we planned to install the dynamo on.

Watch this - at one point I think they were able to power the town.

Maybe you still have some catchin up to do on the show. They haven't gone past the Christmas one with the ice storm. Thought maybe I was missing it, but the website says the same thing. Only 4 episodes so far. Hope they get more up and going soon tho!

LOL thats probably what would have happened to ours!!!!!!!!!!! then it would have taken 127.6 yrs to get our money back!!!!:D

This is my point.
Add into that, all the other expenses of batteries and such. This is where it pays to learn from some ones experience. Especially in this area(this far north of the equator). It's all about efficiency, sometimes those items don't work as well in this area, like they do further down south(closer to the equator).
Better to learn from others mistakes other than your own.........

I think your right, I thought the ones I was wathcing today were new. They are from thanksgiving....LOL I guess I'm just a tad behind, or you just started watching to soon.....LOL
FunGusAmonGus 07-13-2008, 20:42 I have most of the stuff to make a small backyard 12 volt system. I got some fans out of the air condituioning units off that tower I posted pics of and I get used batterys all the time. I also have a few used OTR altenators. I just need a 25-30 foot tower and the time to stick it together.
Just like a Home-brew trail cam - build your own wind turbine.

That's the wind turbine at the New O'Fallon Frieze Harley Davidson. They use it to produce some power.
Here's their "Green site" page.
http://www.friezeharley-davidson.com/miscpage_009.asp
The wind turbines out west makes that one look like a toy.
InIt2Live 07-13-2008, 21:04 that is wierd, the link won't work for me, but I googled it
http://www.friezeharley-davidson.com/miscpage_009.asp
maybe it will work from mine... Looks like they did a lot of pretty cool stuff, its good for big franchises like this to be involved in this kind of stuff. Probably didn't cost them anymore to build with the green materials than with traditional materials.
We had alot of wind turbines in CA, standing next to one of those thing before it goes up on the pole, it felt like standing next to a bus! I have alot of pictures of the turbine fields as we drove out here from CA. Suprised at how many states have them now.
OF COURSE< YA GO AND FIX IT ON ME!!!!! :)
I've found I gotta post the link right to the page to get it to work vs using the "world icon"-to insert link.
lifestudent55 07-13-2008, 21:09 The original article I read when they were building that is they would've been able to produce more of their own electricity from wind power, but the O'Fallon city council wouldn't approve a larger windmill.
InIt2Live 07-13-2008, 21:09 yep, just copy and paste!
I wonder why they wouldn't allow a larger one? Safety issues? Can't imagine what else would make them say no....
lifestudent55 07-13-2008, 21:11 I've found I gotta post the link right to the page to get it to work vs using the "world icon"-to insert link.
If you use the "world icon" to insert a link, make sure it doesn't have 'http://' in it twice. It adds 'http://' at the beginning, so if your link already has that delete it from the window before saving your link to it.
I'm thinking solar might be more cost effective to use in this area. Out west there is a " Wind Corridor" that makes sense for wind mills/turbines.
InIt2Live 07-13-2008, 21:16 I would think the same thing. Where I was at in CA we had at least 10mph winds at all times, most of the time 15-25mph. There had to be some reason they did it tho, maybe just because people can see it, kind of an advertising scheme for those that are "going green"
Probably some kind of "ugly" issue.
Oh my look at that big tower thingy spinning around ughh.......
Just like most in that area have to deal with their little covenant agreements......
lifestudent55 07-13-2008, 21:47 They had never seen one and thought it was going to be ugly or something.
DetectDave 07-13-2008, 22:08 Hey Fun, is that the tower off Waltonville blacktop?
FunGusAmonGus 07-13-2008, 22:18 Hey Fun, is that the tower off Waltonville blacktop?
Nope its down south of Walsh. The guy who sold it to my friend said he worked for a lawer who worked for AT&T and got the inside track on buyin them and got them cheap because he was on the inside and bought 7 of them at once. So there are others around in the area. He said due to increased technology they could eleminate some of them.
gretchensteele 07-14-2008, 06:02 Fun - we actualy thought about buyiong that place, cause it did go pretty cheap and we figured we could scrap ut the tower to pay it off LOL
But alas..chicken legs here is too afraid of borrowing money at our advancing ages....I do not want to retire with any debt....
