in 2000 words or less, and try to do it without slamming your fellow SILOnianZ.

:eek::rolleyes:......
Hunting for me is several different kinds of things. I like to be in the woods and get away from it all and learn with my own eyes about nature and the world around me and to share it with others who appreciate it on the same level as me.
I got to agree with Fun - for me its to get away from it all. Some days I don't shoot at anything and just sit and watch the animals even though I have the equipment with me.
wolfgang 07-09-2008, 23:16 Venison just tastes better when it's natural and you know where it's been, same goes for quail, chucker, and pheasent. My whole family, bar my mom who doesn't hunt, likes venison over other meats.

lifestudent55 07-10-2008, 00:51 It's been several years since I've been hunting, but hoping to rectify that this year. I've hunted mostly small game such as little bunny foo foos, quails, and tried (unsuccessfully) pheasant and turkey. I've also hunted deer with shotgun. Planning on trying with a bow this year.
As with the others it's mostly just being there. Yeah, I want to get meat for the table, but it's also cleansing of the soul being there. Oh yeah, and I like the taste of little bunny foo foo and them other animals.
Also got the ticker kicked in high gear when hunting bunnies in Michigan. All upland game is in season at the same time, but we were primarily after wabbits. Had a few times that ruffed grouse would wait till right after I'd passed them, then take off sounding like a huey right behind me. Definitely got the heart pumping full bore. By the time I realized what had happened they were long gone. I think they do that on purpose.
harvey261 07-10-2008, 02:04 Its a year long quest for me. I plant plots in the early summer late spring, Put cameras out the end of june through april. Start scouting for stand sights last week of september but basically know whats up well before then. Hunt 100 to 120 hunts a year. then repeat. Some seasons are successes some arent. I love seeing mature deer develope on pics, sheds and sightings. I play in the woods too like turkey hunt and rodent hunt and even a few doves. but whitetails are my addictions
I hunt for many reasons:;)
When in the woods hunting I'm away from the "Rat Race" society we live in.
I'm no longer on mans time clock it's now a more Natural Time of Nature.
The good times spent with friends.
The challenge of the stalk and the weather.
I do hunt for the food. People talk about organic food..Venison,wildturkey,quail,ducks,geese,etc..It don't get anymore "Organic". No Hormones or steroids here! I stock my freezer up every fall and we deplete it throughout the winter and summer.. Come fall the cycle starts all over again. It does take the place of store bought meat.
Enjoy my on deer processing, from butchering, grinding & stuffing all the way to making and smoking sausage, jeky, back strap fillets, burger etc..I also enjoy giving some to friends.
The challenge of a quality hunt. One quick and clean kill shot with bow or firearm.
The challenge of keeping myself and my abilities "In tune".
I hunt because it is a natural part of being self sufficient and self sustaining.
I 'reckon' if one word stands out it would be.....
"Challenging"
bigpappy 07-10-2008, 07:10 Hunting gives me a chance to escape society and all her problems, and wrap myself around the greatness that is me. Killing things is just a bonus!
I like to hunt deer, sometimes some squirel. I look forward to trying duck and goose hunting but havent had the oportunity yet. I have given up spring turkey, it just isnt my thing......lol
I hunt for many reasons. As others have said, to get away from it all, the challenge, personal reflection time...etc. But the main reason is to put food on the table.
I personally get the satisfaction of providing my familly with food. And knowing I have the abillity to provide for them. Not just be a working drone that brings home a paycheck to go buy groceries with. And hopefully, with just like fishing. I will have a time that my daughter will want to come along and learn from me, something she can't/won't learn at school. Just like I learned from my father.
DetectDave 07-10-2008, 14:28 Great questions. Firstly, waterfowl is my number 1 followed closely by yee old whitetail and then doves and other upland birds. I hunt because it lets me share a little bit of Mother Nature with those I respect and those I love. I personally get to say a few words every time I go out in the field to those who have gone before me. It's my time to say, Hey Pa....I'm doing what ya taught me many moons ago and I'm keeping family traditions alive. I say, "Hey Great Gramps...thanks for buying this farm so my kids and I have some where to hunt and fish. I say, "Hey Great Grandmaw...thanks for showing me how to catch a bull bluegill or a lil yellow mudcat with a cane pole. I say, Thanks Great Auntie for showing me how to dig that sassafras root or snatch some mullein leaf and make a coffee can of tea over a hot fire. To me it seems like they answer me back every time. My fam eats every thing we harvest and it stimulates conversation at every meal about the hunt or fishing trip and that's what makes family meals good for young people growing up.....sharing memories with one another.
Here are the questions, tell everyone here;
what you like to hunt?,
why you hunt?,
what do you personally get out of hunting?
Whitetail Deer & Turkey are my favorite game to hunt! I may squirrel hunt once or twice a year, but mainly as as excuse to scout for deer or look for Oyster mushrooms, I'm always looking, but have found more oysters during late August and early September than any other time. I wouldn't mind trying goose or duck sometime, just don't really have the time or knowledge.
I hunt because I need to, I need to be in the woods, I need to challenge myself, I like the hunt, trying to figure out the game, where are they, how to get within striking distance, the kill is Great, but not always necessary, some of my most memorable hunts didn't end in a kill and some did. I enjoy working the foodplots, seeing the game in them, I enjoy the trailcams, seeing whats out there, the foodplots and cams give me an excuse to be in the woods all year long. Hunting to me is about way more than big antlers, I don't judge the success of a hunt by P&Y scores, Big Mature Whitetails are great, they get my blood boiling when I see them, but it's not the main reason I'm out there. IF I didn't hunt I would still find some excuse to be out there.
I get a lot out of hunting, some of my best problem solving comes while sitting in a treestand, this may sound silly, but I use my time in a tree to talk with the Man upstairs, it all just seems clearer when I'm in the woods, the time alone in the woods is priceless to me, I enjoy the camaraderie of hunting with friends, deer camp, especially turkey hunting, what a great hunting sport when you can sit beside a friend and call in a bird for them sharing the thrill, but the time alone is crucial, it recharges me to deal with the stress of work and other manmade problems.
these are the answers from my wife, Mrs. Huntrz...
what you like to hunt?
Deer, mushrooms, wild onions, anything I can harvest from nature to utilize in my everyday life.
why you hunt?
sense of pride I get by knowing that I can provide sustenance for myself and my family.
what do you personally get out of hunting?
piece of mind, being out in nature enjoying her beauty.
jbvalentine 07-13-2008, 11:38 The great whitetail deer and waterfowl is the hunting for me, and an occasional dove. I enjoy just getting away from everyday rucus and becoming one with moter nature.
So far I hunted, deer, birds, fish, sheds, shrooms, and Im ALWAYS on the hunt with my cam!!!!! I haven't actually got a deer yet with my bow or gun but I will one of these days..;)..For now I just been going along and trying to learn and observe as much as I can and for me personally at this point ,it's just as rewarding!!
I like to Hunt for alot of reasons but a major one is It's another thing B and I like to do together and something we have in common which I think helps...I love the fresh air, the sunrize-sunsets, and just being out in the great outdoors...I think it's so rewarding to get to get a bird, deer, fish etc, clean it and then have it for dinner.....I always heard of folkz getting "Buck Fever" but I don't think you really understand it you experience it yourself.....and for me it wasn't even with a buck, I get excited no matter what goes through!!!
What I get out of it: I like learning something new and teaching my kids.., It's so nice to experience the whole picture for myself! Sometimes with B and sometimes without...It's the challenge, and the experience!!!
nuthouse 07-13-2008, 14:56 Whitetail is the choice for me, followed by pheasant and rabbit. Hunting is a chance to recharge the batteries so to speak. I really don't care if I get something or not(prefer to but world doesn't end). It is a chance to re-connect with my family as we are spread out over the state and get together for deer season. Also, any doctor will tell you that wild game is healthier than store bought meat. That's why I hunt. I'm sure everyone here has experienced the greatest thing I get out of hunting. I'm talking about the moment right before dawn, all is quiet and a great sense of peace and tranquility just seems to settle all around you. Moments like that I forget my troubles and everything wrong in the world is banished. You know then what it was like in the garden of Eden.
Found this a little while ago...
Fred Bear said, “I hunt because I love the entire process: the preparation, the excitement, and the sustained suspense of trying to match my woodlore against the finely honed creatures. On most days spent in the woods, I come home with an honestly earned feeling that something good has taken place. It makes no difference whether I got anything: it has to do with how the day was spent.”
harvey261 07-13-2008, 22:10 Exactly Bam but i am POSITIVE that the majority of the hunters dont feel that way
DetectDave 07-13-2008, 22:14 I'll weigh in here and say that the majority of my peeps here feel Exactly that way.
Birdhunter1 07-13-2008, 22:20 what you like to hunt?,
why you hunt?,
what do you personally get out of hunting?
I mainly hunt feathered items such as quail and pheasants, but also doves, squirrels tend to make me better stalk and hide, and on the occasional year that I deer hunt it is because I like venison more than beef and I enjoy butchering them.
I quail and pheasant hunt because I have a group of awesome dogs that are just absolutely beautiful to watch work a field over and it is easy they get such joy and pride out of doing there thing. You can learn alot by watching a bird dog work a field over if you take the time to listen and learn.
I squirrel hunt becuase it gets me into the woods and I make it a challenge. I could easily go out with a shotgun and bring in a limit almost anyday between Agusut and December, but take a .22 and challenge yourself on the shots. Some days it is nothing under 40 yards, nothing over 10 yards, only freehand shooting (no leaning or resting against a tree), this year I am adding a 75 yard shot as I have worked my .22 over enough to hopefully achieve this goal. Next year I may try it with my dad's Ruger single 6 .22 pistol (if I can pry it away from him long enough).
Deer hunting to me is a meat sport, I like eating them, my wife likes it, we butcher and process them together and enjoy it. I used to deer hunt alot and enjoyed every minute of it, but now I dont' have the patience to sit in a stand, I love to bird hunt, and I love being afield with my dogs.
What do I get out of it:
The main thing I get out of it is that I take 3 things I love; working with my dogs, shooting, and being outdoors.. and combined them into one adventure. Everyday afield is a new adventure for me whether I am hunting a new place or a place I've been 100 times. You never know what the dog is going to point or what you may see or experience, and the greatest thrill of it is when the dog goes on point as you have no clue what is there, how many are there or what they are going to do. I am a different person when I have my Berretta 391 and my Brittany's with me. And when one of my dogs is on retrieve it is an entire different world for that short minute!
The most memorable hunt thus far is watching my nephew shoot his first quail, I can tell you the place, the time, the dog and where the bird was sitting and dropped. My most memorable hunt that I have had is in kansas in Nov of 2007 my dad, myself and a guy my dad has hunted with for years walked a tailwater pit with my dog Gunner Jo, 5 pheasants got up at my feet at the end of it and I had 3 on the ground without Ron firing a shot and dad got a late shot at the last bird up. What was memorable is not the fact i killed three birds but that I was quick and accurate on teh draw and had 3 well placed shots off quicker than a very accomplished trap shooter and my quick shooting dad.
Now Bird your slackin, don't forget B and I's first hunt with ya....lol How many times can you say you hunted with a pink gun...ROFL! I had a blast bird hunting and can't wait to do it again! I still got the feathers on my shelf in the kitchen but we ate the birds a long time ago! lol
harvey261 07-13-2008, 22:31 Birdhunter i dont even count that in my head as " deer hunting" those are people that love to go out... be in the woods get a couple deer to eat and quit. Maybe even just shot gunhunting as a family tradition. Those people should go hunting all they enjoy the memories. There are times i wish i could go back to that. Im talking about people who claim to live for deer hunting. Love it with a passion and have 7 buttons on their cap by november. The people that cant stop shooting EVERYTHING that comes by because being a slayer makes them feel like they are el professional. And there are LOTS of them. Go to any gradeschool basketball game and you can pick them out with ease. When actually all these people are are people that have no clue what hunting is about...
Birdhunter1 07-14-2008, 00:20 Call it what you want Harvey but I watch the deer year long as you do, I put out food plots for them and other critters as you do, I scout and set up stands as you in strategic locations as you and I shoot the same and field dress the same way you do.... but I am not a real deer hunter for what reason? Because I don't bow hunt? Because I don't shoot only trophy deer? or because I don't consider it as the only real hunting there is?
Answer that one for me in a private message but don't turn this nice thread started by Mr. Huntrz, as to why people hunt how it influences their daily lives, by turning it into a urinating match like a thread has previously been locked.

hARVEY does have a way of ruining every thread he posts in, they all seem to have the same theme, his hate for every other hunter but himself.
Harvey, I believe you could add some intelligent information to this site, it just seems to always turn into why you're the best and nobody else deserves to breathe the same air as you. There are plenty of other sites where you'll get more people to debate your opinions that feel the same way you do, you just have a way of rubbing everyone here the wrong way, and you know it, I think you get a kick out of stirring the pot and getting people riled up.
and hARVEY, if want to reply to me on this, pm me, and try to keep this thread on track please.
gretchensteele 07-14-2008, 07:32 I'm going to weigh in here and really upset the apple cart... i can't hunt with firearms anymore, although I do have the paperwork in the works for a crossbow permit.. see harvey I'm one of those disabled people you referred to in an earlier post. ( and I'm equally sure that you are one who is thinks I shouldn't be posting about living with my disease.. but disabled people enjoy the outdoors too, an dif I can help another disabled person find their way to the woods.. but I digress)
so now I hunt with a camera instead.. I hunt because it brings me a certain peace and calmness to watch the creatures move about, to watch their patterns and how they grow and evolve. I've passed on trophy bucks in the past, because I had certain amount of repsect for that old grey beard who has outsmarted and out witted the world for so long..I always felt a kinshsip and that he deserved to continue to be the king of his territory one more year...
What I got out of hunting - was food. I don't think I've even ever cleaned a fish without giving it a litle touch and silent thank you for providing me with food.
as for what I like to hunt..anything that I can capture in an image now. And believe me..hunting with a camera can take up just as much time, effort and equipment as hunting with firearms, bows, etc.
I also used to trap.. but that's gotten too difficult too...and what I got out of that was selling the pelts..
I'm an old woman from the woods, that dug roots, trapped and made my own meds ...
Oh heck Huntrz.. somehow I really got off track on this.. I'm sorry!!!!
gretchensteele 07-14-2008, 07:35 I personally get to say a few words every time I go out in the field to those who have gone before me. Dave that just made me cry..cause you summed it up perfectly...maybe I should have answered, what ever I can utilize, and cause my mama a taught me to.
lifestudent55 07-14-2008, 07:37 Not too far off track Gretchen. It's all related.
Oh heck Huntrz.. somehow I really got off track on this.. I'm sorry!!!!
no you didn't Gretchen, that was a great answer, the kind of response we all expected from a true SILOnian...:)
We all have our our opinions about the reasons to hunt and I agree with you all concerning the reasons. I too was brought up hunting in the outdoors which made you get to bed early and kept me out of trouble. I used to hunt ducks before school, when I was working all of my vacation was spent in the woods or on the water. Been at this for about 45 years and learning something about the great outdoors still today. I think if there was more involvement in this great sport there would be a lot less problems with the youth today, unfortunately the people Detective Dave and I came into contact with during our employment, never had a chance, no one took them to hunt, fish and enjoy the great outdoors. Be thankful for your friends, parent and mentors that lead you in the right direction. And finally to enjoy the hunt (not the kill) with your friends is something to cherish, I have been hunting with the same two or three friends for 25 years and wouldn't trade those memories for anything. Also you don't know how many sunrises the good Lord has given us , so you don't want to miss any...:)
I hunt Dove, Deer, Quail, and Turkey, in that order every year.
To me, it's all about the challenge of putting myself or my dogs in the right place, at the right time, and successfully following through on all the studying, training, scouting, and execution needed to accomplish the goal at hand.
I hunt mostly public land, so it is especially satisfying when it all comes together despite long odds on over run land that appears picked over by many. I use every tool available to me and I guess I feel like I am solving a complex problem in the woods to accomplish the nearly impossible.
But the time I can get away from the everyday and enjoy the great outdoors is probably the most appealing aspect. I see things that amaze me that we all probably take for granted as outdoorsmen, but to the other 85% of the country, they couldn't care less.
I always tell my wife I am going to "church" when I hunt, because it feels that special to me.

You know I never looked at it that way Kevin but maybe that's part of the reason my bros and I dont' have records......:D
Bam, when your up at 4-5 AM you are too tired to get into any serious mischief....
