Makes me want to cry! I want that 400 2.8 lens, never will be able to afford one but I want one and they broke it ON PURPOSE. :eek:

If they had been released to organizations or even for sale as seconds, unscrupulous buyers would no doubt try to get them replaced or repaired under warranty. By destroying them they are able to write them off as a loss and not take the risk of a secondary loss by having to replace a product they already knew was defective with a new one. Happens a lot more often than you'd think, but this time someone took pictures.

Maybe they could have engraved them with 'defective' or 'seconds' and then released them to non-profits. I've seen it done with other stuff.
It does say a lot about the strict quality control of Canon.
I'm certain there was and insurance claim involved since it was damaged during shipping. I worked in a corporate office of a large tractor company and we had a shipping container on the back of a semi hit a bridge. That was a nice claim.
