Found new claw marks on another tree in Grantsburg swamp. I'm leaning towards the notion that whatever big animal is doing this has retractable claws.

And take a leak near the tree.
I know but it works. LOL
Hard to tell but I'm assuming the tree is verticle.
Aren't the "Claw marks" horizontal? Or are you showing what looks like three verticle scratches???
Could it be some type of bug like a wood borer insect? It would be more interesting if it was a big ole bear!
Scratching Posts
Like house cats scratching furniture, cougars mark their territory boundaries by leaving claw marks on trees, stumps, and occasionally fence posts. Claw marks left by an adult cougar will be 4 to 8 feet above the ground and consist of long, deep, parallel scratches running almost vertically down the trunk. These gashes rarely take off much bark; tree-clawing that removes much bark is probably the work of a bear. (Bobcat claw marks are normally 2 to 3 feet above the ground; domestic cat scratching occurs at a height of about 1½ to 2 feet).
If I'm looking at the pics right these scratches go across the tre side to side instead of down the length of the tree.
Mdoc,
Such plagiarism..!

A nice buck.
Well, if a woodpecker did that I would like to see the size of that bird for sure. From everything I've been seeing I believe its some sort of big cat but without seeing it no one can know for certain. I may go back tomorrow and spend more time.
