View Full Version : Crawdad trapping....
FunGusAmonGus 05-01-2008, 20:42 Anybody know the regs. on setting out crayfish traps like in oxbows on the Okaw?? Do you have to have them tagged? Do you need a commercial licence? I just picked up a small boat and an thinking about setting some out.
lifestudent55 05-01-2008, 20:52 You don't need a commercial license unless you're selling them. I didn't see anything site specific for crawdads. You do have to tag the traps with your name and mailing address. What kind of crawdad traps are you using?
i think all you need is your name address and phone number on the trap, but could be mistaken
FunGusAmonGus 05-01-2008, 21:00 I seen on TV a guy down in LA who used chicken wire rolled up and one end as krempt shut the other end look like the opening in a fish trap kinda inverted.
lifestudent55 05-01-2008, 21:02 When I was in Louisiana the traps we used were a square of net with a wire frame. You hung bait from the top of the frame. You don't leave this kind unattended though.
FunGusAmonGus 05-01-2008, 21:08 I have seen some traps you can buy but that would blow my budget
lifestudent55 05-01-2008, 21:10 Those are probably for commercial trapping though. No point spending that much to trap mud bugs.
we have some that are basicaly minnow traps made out of chicken wire or a small mesh with smaller openings on each side than a minnow trap
FunGusAmonGus 05-01-2008, 21:25 I just want to collect enough up to have a boil once in a while. Wal-mart used to sale the tail meat and it was kinda cheap. But the stopped and every place else I found want more than shrimp for them.
CrawDads, You got to love-um! Here's a good link, very imformative.

FunGusAmonGus 05-01-2008, 21:36 Thanks for the link! Looks like some good info on there.
I think I seen a 'Dirty Jobs' episode where they showed them using traps like you mentioned fungus.
And may I suggest if you don't mind, Tony Cacheries is an excellent cajun spice for boiling the bugs in. Actually it's good on everything :D We go through several cans a year!
FunGusAmonGus 05-02-2008, 10:29 This looks like a good link....

.
FunGusAmonGus 05-13-2008, 19:45 Like everything else a bunch of rules. The trap has to be a certain size , the holes have to be a cetain size and a bunch of other stuff...
heres some pics of the traps I made . I haven't got to try them out yet.

lifestudent55 05-13-2008, 20:01 If you have a big mudbug boil, give me a call first.
FunGusAmonGus 05-13-2008, 20:04 I stuck them out at the lake for a few hours but I didn't get nothing. I need chicken necks and a creek to stick them in and some warmer temps and leave them over night. I have to finish two more.
gretchensteele 05-13-2008, 20:07 Hey Fun..how much would you charge to make me one of those???
My old ones seem to have wandered away..I think they left with the jon boat....
FunGusAmonGus 05-13-2008, 20:15 Once I get the other two done I don't think theres enough money in the world to get me to make more... Working with that wire gave me blisters on my blisters. You can buy them online for just about what the material cost. I bought a roll of that wire which was enough to make four 9 inch x 36 inch tubes and it was $25. I think bass pro sells the little ones for about $10 they are about the size of a loaf of bread.
gretchensteele 05-13-2008, 20:17 I am suspicious that's why I got that go to H**l look from Critter when I asked him to make a couple of new ones...LOL I understand !

Got any old chicken wire layin around? Or do you know where there is any?
duckhunter669 05-13-2008, 21:12 the crawfish up here aint worth eatin, they aint much meat in their tails
FunGusAmonGus 05-13-2008, 21:17 Stae reg. says the hole in the trap can't be bigger than 1 1/2 inches in dia. That not going to be very big bug. I have seen some real nice ones on my back porch after a heavy rain. They looked like a small lobster about4-5 inches long. A few 5 gal buckets full of them would be nice.:)
I saw crawdad traps at wallyworld in Sparta Sunday, kind of small and I didn't notice how much they cost.
Lol, i was just gonna start one of these threads... Anyway i was wondering if anyone has done any good using the old cane pole method for the mudbugs? I got a creek that i have been spotting a couple 5+ inch dads. Hundreds of smaller ones. any tips on hot to get em?
FunGusAmonGus 05-13-2008, 21:55 I have used a string and bacon to drag them out of a hole. How did you use the cain pole?
gretchensteele 05-14-2008, 07:01 I've used the string and bacon method too! LOL Fun all my extra wire has gone to the great chicken coop project....(Building a portable/moveable set of coops) Critter keeps telling me I can't have chickens again..but I figure I can have em for a week before he even notices them! LOL
FunGusAmonGus 05-14-2008, 09:20 I seen some on Dirty Jobs they where made of chicken wire unroll it and fold one end over about 5-6 inches them roll it back up in a oval shape and flip up the end that you folded over to make the funneled part . Then on the other end just kinda krimp it over about 2 inches to keep it shut. It looked simple and didn't look like it took a lot of time or effort to make.;)
gretchensteele 05-14-2008, 10:10 Fun my pal is out of work again..and I'm trying to keep him in little projects..we trade work for home cooked meals, beer, and satellite TV watching LOL ...I'll probably add crawdad traps to his list! LOL
here's link to our chicken coop project..albiet we've made some alterations as we're scavaging our materials LOL
If anybody has an old doghouse they's want to donate to the cause..I'll share eggs when they get here!

FunGusAmonGus 05-25-2008, 08:31 Cool .... Thanks...:)
OK, I built 2 of the traps on the wut2c site that was posted earlier...
http://wut2c.com/Activities/Survival%20Trips/Food/Collection/Crayfish/crawdad%20trap.htm
I'm gonna go deploy em here soon. I hope to catch a bluegill or 2 for bait!
The project was pretty simple, anyone should be able to put em together in about a 1/2 hour or so if you just use wire ties... if your anal and have to wrap each and every wire to strengthen it, (ME!) a bit longer...
I used 1/2 in mesh because it was cheaper, BUT if you want your trap to be used for minnows as well get the 1/4 in mesh.
Each trap will run about $5 to make.
I'll post pics when they are full of delicious tails!!!
InIt2Live 05-28-2008, 12:48 Might have to make me a few and have a boil... I am going to be missing my annual "Crawdad Festival" in California this coming Fathers Day weekend, so I might have to have my own!
YUM YUM!!

G, you are not going to belive this...a few years back I built a chicken/duck coop. Built a dog house style house for the birds with a side latched door for access. Has a shelf for 3 nest boxes in it.
I am up a little north of Edwardsville. I will have to confirm with the little lady that she ain't wanting chickens again...then...if it's a no, you can have it! :D
