A buddy and I are going to be camping at rend lake next week and hunting 5th season at 10 mile creek. In the afternoon I think we are going to be doin some fishin, mainly for cats but I wouldn't mind some crappie(never tried for these). My question-- are the birds gobblin good or is it hit and miss?

I was in Pope county last weekend which is quite a bit further south and the birds were pretty vocal on the limb but would get pretty quiet after fly down until they lost their hens. Called in 2 gobblers...one at around 730 am and one at 1100 am. MISSED BOTH! See my other thread for the full story. I'd recommend hunting until 1:00pm and keep moving until you get one to respond unless you have done alot of scouting and know when and where the birds are gonna show. They were henned-up pretty bad down in Pope.

Best of luck,

Joe

The activity is pretty good down in union county. IF I could catch a break from the mushroom hunters tromping through the woods, 3 days I've had then come walking by now an scared 2 birds off that i know of. :( But the turkeys are out there an willing :)

You should've heard em' gobbling when the thunder was booming this morning. Every time it rolled it was followed up with a big old gobble.

I got one to play this morning. I roosted two longbeards last night. This morning, I set up on them, but don't know if it was the 17 deer or the coyote that made 'em fly down the other way. I circled around to another field and had one 'do it right'. I called twice and he cut me off both times. When I called the third time, he popped over the hill in my lap. He was a nice 2yo. Turkey for dinner. It was hard to hear any gobbling in the wind, though. These other guys are right....hunt until 1 or your tag is full whichever comes first. They're losing hens to the nests mid morning now.
