Guess they are included in the Pepsi generation whether they like it or not. They have a way around a lot of there own law's these days dont they ? lifestudent55 04-16-2008, 12:55 Well they're not allowed to use AC, but there's no rule against DC. They're not allowed to have phones that are wired, but are allowed to use cell phones. It's become a necessity in some cases. Before cell phones became so relatively inexpensive those with businesses that required phones would have a phone building on the easement with a phone and an answering machine. There are also special dispensations for health concerns. One of Mom's cousins has asthma so they're authorize electricity for their nebulizer. Not for lights though. They use propane powered refrigerators similar to what campers use. The idea isn't to create an undue hardship, but to remind themselves constantly that they are to remain different. flatlander 04-16-2008, 12:59 Well they're not allowed to use AC, but there's no rule against DC. If they are just wanting to look/be different they do that just by there appearance ?? I know nothing about them but always assumed they wanted to remain as close to the old ways of living as possible ? Well they're not allowed to use AC, but there's no rule against DC. They're not allowed to have phones that are wired, but are allowed to use cell phones. To me this makes it look like they are just trying to get around there way of living. Like I said coming from someone that knows nothing about there rules/laws etc. lifestudent55 04-16-2008, 16:19 Flat, my cousins used to have to keep their guitars and drums hidden under the beds whenever the bishop would come around. Didn't want to get caught breaking the rules. flatlander 04-16-2008, 16:23 Flat, my cousins used to have to keep their guitars and drums hidden under the beds whenever the bishop would come around. Didn't want to get caught breaking the rules. At the bottom of there long list of laws......NO FUN ? LOL lifestudent55 04-16-2008, 16:28 You'd be surprised, but they still have a lot of fun. Ever see 'For Richer or For Poorer' with Tim Allen and Kirstie Alley? Very real. They love to get one over on someone while letting the other person think they're the one pulling something over on them. Back to the original subject though, I could see where something like this could be pretty convenient if you are hiking in and away from any other source of electricity for an extended time. You're right about those prices though. I bought an AC invertor for the truck so I can plug my charger or other AC device in while away from home. gretchensteele 04-16-2008, 18:06 a little pricey yes..but could really be a handy thing....not to mention..one more thing powered by the sun vs Amren can't be all bad... lifestudent55 04-17-2008, 11:01 Great point Gretchen. I'm wondering how long it would take for the savings to pay for itself. Probably take a while, but as you pointed out Gretchen, the money wouldn't be going to Ameren. Bob 04-17-2008, 11:44 NO FUN... check out this movie http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0293088/ The Amish are cool folks. It's just weird to me that people see them as some sort of tourist attraction. Of course I grew up just down the road from Lancaster PA.... we dealt w/ the Amish a lot. We always bought our Red Wings from an Amish guy named Aden... he and his boys also worked tack and leather goods. http://hartleyfoundation.org/files/imagecache/film_page/files/devils_playground.jpg http://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV5BNDc2MzAzNjI0NF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwODc5NjAyMQ@@._ V1._SY400_SX600_.jpg flatlander 04-17-2008, 11:57 That looks (the cover) like some kind of Amish porn movie. :p Go outside! Panasonic Lumix FZ7 Wildview 2.0 trailcams You know if everyone could Go outside as often as you there wouldn't be a SILO.com Are we listing trail cams now too ?:D lifestudent55 04-17-2008, 12:06 That was filmed in Lagrange County, Indiana, where my folks live. Bob 04-17-2008, 12:11 That looks (the cover) like some kind of Amish porn movie. :p Only you'd want to watch that. You know if everyone could Go outside as often as you there wouldn't be a SILO.com Don't be jealous... just do it... and take your new camera. flatlander 04-17-2008, 13:59 Don't be jealous... just do it... and take your new camera. I will Bossman, although it's a little more of a challenge with a kid that has diabetes. lifestudent55 04-18-2008, 07:42 Here's a solar charger for cell phones for only $35. http://www.midamericasolar.com/product.php?productid=384&cat=34&page=1 This company will also put your house on solar for electric, water heater, etc., but don't expect that to be near as cheap. They even have a solar oven. http://www.midamericasolar.com/home.php?cat=32 It'd probably work pretty good when camping and stuff too. |
