JUST WONDERING WHAT A GOOD LOCAL PLACE(NOT A CHAIN RESTURANT) WAS TO EAT AT IN YOUR NECK OF THE WOODS? I KNOW THIS ISN'T DIRECTLY RELATED TO OUTDOORS BUT EVERYONE DOES HAVE TO EAT...

BENNIES ITALIAN FOODS- ITALIAN(LASAGNA'S A FAVORITE)-CASUAL-MARION IL

For a pretty nice place with GREAT food, Gallagher's in Waterloo has some scrumptious grub. The rib-eye is the best I ever had.
Burksville IL. Fri Sat Sun chicken and fish. Some may even call it a dive great food though. Also any time you fish pinkneyville you gotta love the dixie cup.
Ckickens resturant in St. Libory has good food and also has a seafood buffet on fridays
Smokey Mc Pot 03-21-2007, 15:45 Pistol City in coulterville is an excellent place to eat at also has a seafood buffet on fridays
Smokey Mc Pot 03-21-2007, 21:48 Mississippi Flyway is in Carbondale at murdale stripmall . And the Mid-land Inn is just down the road which has great BBQ.
mississippi flyway is a good place to eat i will agree on that
Quackaddict59 03-22-2007, 01:18 Big Mommas BBQ in belleville is the Best ima, porsteak bigger than your head for 6 bucks. cant beat that.
Not sure where the other places are but the Mississippi Flyaway is pretty good been there a couple times...17th street in Murphysboro and the new location in Marion is good bbq they were the world champions a couple years I believe.....Hasn't anyone tried the Lodge? South of C-dale at Giant City?
They have cabins you can rent,a gift shop,a lounge and bar, a park, horseback, camp ground, lake, bluffs, visitors center, water tower that you can walk up on and view the area, hiking trails, and pretty close to all the wine trails....I think the all you can eat is 8.95 a person but mon-thurs they have a special i believe for 6.99 durning lunch....at least for now they do........and they are closed in the winter until like early feb. We always enjoy going there to eat because it is something a little different and it is Historic it was built in the early 1900's but I don't know the details about it. ....I think they have a website.....Anyways here are some photos from last week at the Lodge..........

Bowtechman 03-22-2007, 09:07 Hey, the GC Lodge is just down from my house. The foods not bad, cool area to. The Flyway is good food and not bad price. If you want pizza in C-Dale go to Italian Village or Quartos. Walkers in Ziggler has good fried chicken.
They opened a 17th St BBQ here in Ofallon or Fairview Heights. Where Super Smokers used to be.
Steven K 03-22-2007, 11:34 mike has a bbq stand in lenzburg in the after noons called mikes asmokin bbq, usuallly pretty good
Smokey Mc Pot 03-22-2007, 22:06 yeah they just opened a 17th in farview hieghts and i havent ate there but the one in Mbro is pretty good and the one in marion is good to but the best bbq is super smokers and Smokey bones in sweansee
Oh yea....Walker's in Zeigler...That is kinda rustic bar/rest..You could come straight out of the woods into that resturant and fit right in! LOL......We got a bunch of food there and it was all good.....We even got aligator tail but I don't know about that! We liked it enough to refer some people there.......There just isn't much in Zeigler, but it was cheap and good......I love the fried pickles.......that is what I always get at 17th street as well.......Isn't there a place over by Kincaid to eat at? A boat house rest.? or something like a all you can eat place over that way?
yeah they just opened a 17th in farview hieghts and i havent ate there but the one in Mbro is pretty good and the one in marion is good to but the best bbq is super smokers and Smokey bones in sweansee
Super Smokers was the bext ribs I ever ate. An array of sauces to choose from. (I liked to mix KC and the Texas Hot) They got too big too fast I guess. If you want that you gotta drive to West STL someplace.
Smokey Bones ribs SUCKS and so does Buffalo Wild Wings, IMHO.

super smokers ribs were really good, i beleive the only resturant open still is the eureka location. im still set on big momma bbq. i love it. 54th street bar and grille in shiloh is pretty good too. real nice enviroment.
For us Smokey Bones was ok but sometimes it seems like the little places are the best! LOL
"If it has grease on the door knob, it is prolly a good place~!" lol
Steven K 03-23-2007, 09:41 good ole greasey spoons, nothin better, super smokers did hav (I'm an idiot for swearing)(I'm an idiot for swearing)(I'm an idiot for swearing)(I'm an idiot for swearing) good ribs 2
There is a place up in Stl Bandana's BBQ it was pretty good......didn't like the boiled peanuts though.......and a little placie called Smokin Al's in St louis....that was cheap and had large portions.........And gotta LOVE IMO"S PIZZA! Sometimes we drive all the way to Stl to get IMOS and go to Bass Pro of course in St Charles.....
We only been to gorham once...We bought a honda scooter from a guy there ..it was in the sitrader......Sounds like a nice place gus.on rt 3? Maybe well stop in........We are so tired of the same places.......
THANKS GUS! we are thinking about going somewhere today.......it is so nice and maybe ill get some more pics in................
We went to Bottoms Up today and hung around kinkaid..........It was nice dinner.....I had the bbq and it was pretty good...............It is a little place in the middle of no where but it was pretty good...........Here is a photo........

has anyone else eaten at Reeds Harvest House in Chester. i think its one of the best seafood buffets anywhere
has anyone else eaten at Reeds Harvest House in Chester. i think its one of the best seafood buffets anywhere
I've been there, but ate at Chicken's in St. Libory this past weekend and thought it was much better than Reed's. Pretty much the same grub, but the crab tasted fresh, I made a pretty big dent in that.
All for only $12.95
So which is better??? gotta try em BOTH:D
What Days Are The Buffets? Or Is It Everyday.......wok And Roll In Marion Also Has A Buffet That Isn't Bad.....it Is Cheaper through the week And even cheaper at Lunch. They Have American And Chinesse On It..
did u say Chickens had crab legs bob? i live just outside St. Libory and go there quite a bit but havent been there lately. let me know what days they have them i might have to go there again
Quackaddict59 04-02-2007, 22:29 I'm with you on this one Bob reids is kinda a ripoff when it comes to crab. Its worth the drive if you want crab legz to go to Belleville to Bamboo Valley or Emprors Wok....
yea bamboo valley is awesome, i live not too far from there.
FunGusAmonGus 04-02-2007, 22:38 Some times they are kinda slow bringin out the crablegs though( Bamboo Valley) thats why I like Emporors Wok bad thing about them is their crab legs are served cold, but there is never a wait...

they are kinda expensive though

Friday night we were there. It was crowded. We walked in and they asked if we had reservations:eek:. Nope, but we got a seat fast. The crab was hot, and they kept it coming.
This may be the freshest tasting crab I've had since moving out here. Hard to get good seafood in the middle of the freakin country.
Steven K 04-03-2007, 11:18 i like reid's better than chickens, the last couple time i went 2 chikens, its ben bad
I just thought of another one....
LAMBERT'S CAFE in Sikeston MO. Home of the Throwed Rolls! It is a little drive but worth it to me! They walk around with extras to add to you dinner and the portions are huge! I got the Hog Jowl and it was overflowing off my plate. Kids love it because they throw the rolls across the room, the train comes through, and they can play on the train outside. They are in a different building than the orginal one but it is right down the road. It is alot bigger. We used to have to wait in line forever but that has changed now. They also have a arcade and little quarter machines when you come in and a gift shop when you leave. I don't think they take credit cards though! So have cash! Anyone else been?
i may just have to revisit Chickens this friday. that place just hasnt been the same since they lost the original owner but i still go there every now and then
My wife's uncle told me about a place in sessor that has awesome specials, I forgot the name and will get it from him next time i see him. He says its VERY reasonable priced and HUGE portions, and to top it off its excellent food.
Hope to get the name an location later on this week or if someone else knows of this place they can name it too......I have alot of free time on my hands for the next 3 months so i should be checking it out soon. :P
try "The Roadhouse" in Bremen, IL, located about 2-3 miles NE of Chester just off 150 on the south side, I haven't been there in awhile, but heard one of the old owners was running it again and always had good luck there when he ran it.
wife and I ate at shooting complex Friday nite, very disappointed, we both had different seafood platters, food tasted like it was fresh out of SAMS freezer, scallops were pressed from fish parts probably artificial, clam strips were not good, bluegill (tilapia) had a weird breading on them, coleslaw was very plain.
rolls were awesome, also had fried portabella mushrooms fro appetizer and they were very good.
if you like Chinese food, there is a place in Sparta called "Dynasty" 1/2 a block west of 154 & rt 4, 4-way stop. it is not a buffet, but the food is some of the best if not THE BEST i've ever had, very clean, the service is some of the best I've ever experienced, I like the mongolian beef, my wife gets the Sizzling Woarbar, the spring rolls are awesome and the dragon soup is great! I give this restaurant an 11 out of 10 possible! and I'm a picky #*^#*^!
MAN! I'm on a dinner ROLL! here's another one, Tony's in Mascoutah, great Prime rib, I get mine medium rare and have them char it on the grill, good food! good service! good value!
Smokey Mc Pot 04-03-2007, 22:31 (I'm an idiot for swearing)(I'm an idiot for swearing)(I'm an idiot for swearing)(I'm an idiot for swearing) son u must get out alot i agee with you on the shooting complex it isnt all that good and the dynasty is alright never ate anywhere else where u posted
here's another hidden treat for ya! Marcello's Pizza in Chester, I am a pizza fanatic and this is one of the best, I like sausage, pepperoni and mushroom, the wife likes the supreme, they also have the "Popeye Special" Spinach, bacon, onion, very good!
Marcello Pizza
967 State St, Chester, IL
Tel: (618) 826-1524
Steven K 04-04-2007, 10:50 tonys is great, the farm house in chester is good, but i've never ate @ Dynasty, i'll hav to give her a run, 88 china in Freeburg is good, as well as Ja Bowl in waterloo
DetectDave 04-09-2007, 05:12 I would also weigh in w/ a thumbs up for the Roadhouse in Bremen, Bottoms Up in Neunert for chicken (esp Tues nites...it's I think $5 for a whole chicken), and we can't forget the Pioneers Cabin in Willisville. Midway Inn between Carbondale and Murphysboro is a hidden gem off old Rte 13 for BBQ and Mexican.
Last time I ate at a place called "The Roadhouse" was in Salem MO. We were referred by the Hotel it was good.
There was a motorcycle burnout coming out the front door and across the new deck, While playing pool I noticed a lot of pock marks in the wall (That was recently painted) I asked the old lady waitress if they were bullet holes? She replied (NO BS) "You know boys when they get to drinkin, when they start shootin, I just duck down behind the bar." Food was good though. Don't think I'd want to be there past 11 on a Friday night being an outsider and all...
Back at the hotel, the folks at the desk asked how it was. "Great" I said, "Bullet holes and all."
They replied, I thought they were supposed to fix them...
Oh My God....sounds Like The Old Wild West..lol.
Zerky Tibits needs to verify this one.... He's a lurker...
I Can;'t Believe That No One Has Been To Lamberts..it Is A Drive But It Is A Really Good Place To Eat And The Kids Love It When They Throw The Rolls.....
I Can;'t Believe That No One Has Been To Lamberts..it Is A Drive But It Is A Really Good Place To Eat And The Kids Love It When They Throw The Rolls.....
My wife has, but the was Pre-me:p
We actually just talked about it recently.
If You Go Make Sure You Are Hungary! Lol...the Portions Are Big And They Walk Around With More Helpings Of Other Things.oh And Their Cups Are Like The Jug You Get At The Hospital....lol.....let Me See If I Can Find Some Info On It......
It said that they bake 520 dozen rolls a day......I can't believe that........And those rolls are huge too......That's alot of bread!
Here is there link.........http://www.throwedrolls.com/
DetectDave 04-10-2007, 20:36 Mmmmmm..I'm dreamin about Lamberst macaroni & tomatoes, fried okra, fried taters, ham & beans..all the great sides...as well as sweet molasses for the throwed rolls:D
Where is the Midland INN at?? And what is it like??? Huntrz, try Waltz pizza in Marion...It is really good...We like the Double Decker and the Thin and Crispy. Also Imo's pizza is STL is def different. That cheese is so werid it sticks to the top of your mouth. We like the thin there.
What about a Joe's fish house or something by Kincaid ? How is that?
Also THe golden Corral is in C-dale not Cville gus, It is usually pretty good if you like buffets. At lunch though it is all you can eat hamburgers and hotdogs, At dinner it is all you can eat Steak......It does get pretty busy there on the weekend.
DetectDave 04-15-2007, 06:12 Midland Inn
618-529-9133 • 7570 Old Highway 13, Murphysboro,IL 62966
Map: http://yellowpages.aol.com/main.adp?_dlc=79&_dis=0&_dirsview=distance&_dirskip=0&_dgid=0%2c108817154&_dgskip=0%2c9&_dircid=108817154&_diraction=map&_dircity=Alto+Pass&_dirstate=IL&_dirlat=375703&_dirlong=%2d893175&_dircat=581301&_dirdma=363
The specialties are BBQ and Mexican. I was there but didn't rty either as I pretty full and just needed a few cocktails. They really pack them in and the Q is "reportedly" better than 17th St which is pretty hard to beat in my book.
Crazy Joes south of Kinkaid Lake is open. I was going to stiop by but two locals said.."pass". Sounds like cat, carp, and buffalo are the mainstays but I can only speak from secondhand knowledge. That said, any one of those 3 done right is fine fare too.
I've got to weigh in on Triple E BBQ in east Marion as well. I like to think I do a pretty good job of smoking but those pork chops they've got are A#1. I'm a big boy and I can't hardly finish their special that has 2 of those bad boys + sides for like $8. I sometimes order the chops to go at about $1.75 a piece to take home..Awesome.
I too like Walts Pizza and their other entrees as well.
Larry's BBQ in Christopher (Duqouin too I guess) has pretty good smoked turkey sandwiches paired up w/ some corn nuggets..Mmmmm
 Thanks!
I heard about the Midland Inn but never tried it. Went to 17th street in Marion last night. I love the fried pickles and the onion straws as apps. Just a bit pricey, kids meals are even 5.99 but it is good as usual
We like Triple E. I think we are regulars now! lol. The pork chops are huge. The 1/2lb hamburgers are big as well. They also have the all you can eat fish, chicken, ribs and shrimp dinners with two sides for like 6.99 I think. We have been to all three in Marion, the one in West Frankfort and the one in Mt Vernon but prefer the Lake the best with Marion east in second. There b-fast is good as well and you get like 2 eggs, 3 bacon or sausage, 2 toast or biscuit, and taters for like 3-4 bucks.
Waltz is one of my favorites! We go there all the time. I spoke with Walt the other night and he said he is adding on again. This time he is building a deck outside. I thought that was nice. Alot of guys will prolly enjoy sittin outside and drinkin. He also said he bought the lot next door for more parking. He already got the house torn down and they started on it when I drove by the other day.... If you go late on the weekend it is packed. We like going right at 5 and it doesn't get bad yet.
If you are in Marion try out Bennie's Italian close to the Square. It is good. Try the Lasagna. Alot of people love it .
Here you go Dounut!- you'll have to try Mary Lous for breakfast(or lunch).....It is so good.....They cook up a whole mess of stuff right in front of you and it is pretty cheap to... Oh and all their pies are homemade and yummy!!
Right on the strip in C-dale by the train tracks! But they are only open until 2pm.
eatmordonuts 07-10-2007, 17:36 Are there any "home town" bakeries in the area, and if not would you think that there would be support for one?
In Marion we have a little place called Larry's Cakes....It is so good.Right on Rt 37!....We only order from there durning special occasions. They make the cakes and cookies there and then Dixie Cream in West Frankfort makes the dounuts and they sell each other's products.....They also have drinks and balloons there as well....Been going there since I was little........I don't know off hand in c-dale but I am suprised we don't even have a crispy cream yet or anything.....We used to have a dunkin dounuts like 20 years ago but that's it. I bet we will be getting something soon with the way marion is growing....
eatmordonuts 07-10-2007, 17:49 Krispy Kreme = :p I'm talking real donuts, Pecan Crispies that'll make your eyes water, Apple friiters that can drop you to your knee's. Hate to brag... but I'm pretty good at that sort of thing, worried that I wont find a job down there so thinking of some business ideas that might work. Any of these fine restuarants looking for a Chef?
You really should then....eps. with the college over in C-dale......My father in law came down and couldn't believe that there where not any donut places around.......he wanted to open up one down here but couldn't stand the gosh darn humidity! Eps. with all the hunters and fishermen that are up early in the mornings! That is the perfect thing to grab and go.....anyway, the jobs around here aren't that good to come by....you might look into it somemore..
DetectDave 07-10-2007, 19:33 I like the apple fritters but what's a pecan crispie?
scott huschle 07-10-2007, 21:50 Crazy Joes off hwy 151 west of the ava boat ramp is pretty good.Lots of cold brew and good company and always lots of fried food. The tavern in ava next to the grocery store reopened and the food isn't bad and the service is getting better since its opening, used to be called (pattywhackers). Can never go wrong with pioneer cabin in willisville & carterville.
Birdhunter1 07-10-2007, 22:07 Dave Crazy joe's has lots of good food: Cajun Crawfish tails, frog leggs, shrimp baskets, catfish, chicken (never had it), Joe's fries, some other seafood and other stuff too. I don't know who told you buffalo, carp and other not so great sounding stuff but they have great food, get there early though as the place does pack full by 6:30 or 7 p.m.
Tell whoever told you they have crappy food to pull their head out of their arse!
Another good place is the Peach Barn Cafe', get off of HWY 127 at Alto Pass like you are heading toward Bald Knob Cross and it's on the right before you get to the turn off to the cross. Excellent Swedish menu, the owners are from Sweden and she is an awesome cook!
17th st. is not that great in my opinion, good barbeque can also be found at Triple E down by Lake of Egypt power plant (if it's still open).
Another good one in Carbondale is the Mississipi Flyway by Murdale True Value, excellent italian beef, fried fish.. hell everything is good! The owners are big time outdoorsmen and the walls are adorned with every huntable species of animal found in the Miss. Flyway.. hence the name!
If you are in the Wolf Lake/Ware/Grand Tower area the Duck Inn ain't too bad. approx 1/2 mile north of Wolf lake on Rte. #3
In Nuenert (pronouced Ninert for you out of towners) there is Bottom's Up Bar and Grille.. Excellent food and a decent place.
In Anna-Jonesboro there is Dixie BBQ, best bbq in my opinion, puts 17th St. to shame. On IL-146 near the courthouse and Casey's gas station.
Midland's is also a great place to go, can't beat their fried fish.
Bottom's Up, the Duck Inn, Dixie BBQ are all located in my hunting areas and often time I have walked in with muddy boots and bloody clothes and it's ok! Mud blood and beer, three things that go together!
Is crazy joes open everyday and it is a family enviroment or not?
Birdhunter1 07-10-2007, 22:34 It's open only on Friday and Saturday nights, lots of beer consumed but it's not a rowdy place.
We go to Nick's while we are camping at Rend Lake....It is pretty good but a little pricey for our family compared to triple e or something IMO...I think it was around 35-40 with tip and all.....we also ate B-fast there one morning and it was pretty good. B-fast was around 25..........We ended up at ate at Larry's Pit bbq in christopher three times while we where camping this last trip. Larry's was good and cheap as well. :D
Someone told me to try MAID RITE in christopher but said they didn't have booths so I opted out....
We also tried gob's pizza which used to be papa's pizza and it was ok...we all got the buffet and it was around 35 for the 5 of us.
Captian D's for lunch one day ....it was good and cheap like 18 but had to eat in the car and
The Plaza place across from nicks which was pretty good and about 25 for the five of us.
There is a new place opening mama browns' or something like that right down from gobs pizza but we didn't have a chance to try it~
In my neck of the wood -- the Shawnee Lounge has some good food.
People are nice -- cold brew and some real interesting evenings
The Red Cedar in Eddyville also good
In Golconda -- a little place called Cafe Mia I think -- pretty nice
Of course -- the Creek has great burgers.
DetectDave 07-12-2007, 16:57 Duck Inn has had a pretty light crowd of late. I had heard that Donna was trying to sell it but I think that didn't work out. Gotta love the dogs cleaning up yer crumbs..LOL I've been hearing some good things about Babes Fish House in East Cape..particularly their "Buffalo ribs".. They rarely can keep them as folks buy themn out quickly.

Is that real buffalo? Or just hot ribs?
I love bison meat. Wish I was an Indian before they killed em all. Extremely good meat.
The lodge has bison........There is also a bison farm real close and a full bison mount inside the lodge over by the door as you come in...
lifestudent55 07-12-2007, 20:25 How about putting address for these restaurants so when those of us from out of town want to find them we can?
Birdhunter1 07-12-2007, 22:12 Dave, Donna was trying to sell it but it has't worked out. Definetely the ype of place you can walk in in muddy boots and noone cars, plus pretty decent food.
DetectDave 07-13-2007, 09:40 The buffalo ribs are the fish and apparently they fry them up in such a way that you grab them by an exposed rib and chow on the fish covered end like a lamb chop. I haven't seen them yet but all of our friends are raving about them. I had some pretty good leftover cat thatwas pretty tasty. Tasted like they were using Andy's for their breading.
Where is the duck inn located at?
Have you seen the Omelets at Mary Lou's??? There as big as you head! I couldn't believe it. Also the BBQ there is sooo good...That is what I usually get .I am a creature of habit, but my hub always orders different stuff.
I think last time it was Meatloaf, Green Beans, Taters, Rolls, Gravy and Apples for like 4.99 something like that I could be wrong.... But I couldn't believe the price....It is so cheap, for what you get! And the kids love sitting up at the Bar and eating although when we bring the little one we gotta get a table.
We tried every resturant around or so I thought....That is why I started the thread...I was so sick of the same ol things. We have tried Bottoms Up in Gorham so far and Super Smokers in STL that were both listed on here to try and they both were really good.
We like to eat out too Dave, my grandma swears were RICH! HA!
DetectDave 07-14-2007, 15:57 Duck Inn is at the north end of Wolf Lake (On Rte 3 about 4 miles north of Rte 146 (Ware) and roughly 10 or so miles south of Grand Tower. Ever been to the Tin Barn in Jacob? Good chili, deep fried black olives stuffed w/ asiago cheese, good burgers too.
Birdhunter1 07-14-2007, 16:26 There aren't many out of the way places I haven't ate in southern IL.
If there was one place we could try what would you recommend around my area?
Birdhunter1 07-14-2007, 20:57 Lake of Egypt, Triple E near the power plant ain't bad. There's a little place that used to be right in Goreville but I can't remember the name of it 9right in the middle of town), a BBQ on the south side of town ain't to bad.
Another good one is Cerro de cilla in Anna.
right here in Chester theres a place....
right out on my deck, I cooked up some pork steaks tonite
no one could touch! on the charcoal grill with some hickory chips,
ott's ozark recipe bbq sauce! (I'm an idiot for swearing)(I'm an idiot for swearing)(I'm an idiot for swearing)(I'm an idiot for swearing) those were goo-ood!
We always got to Triple E Bird!......breakfast lunch and dinner....eps when we was remodeling my kitchen! ugh! I guess you didn;t read the other posts on this thread...They put in our order when we walk in ...lol.
Late Bloomers and Dad's Pizza is in goreville....Kb bbq was but it burnt and is in the old pulleys bbq building in marion now and it is really good...
HUNTRZ BBQ
*don't sound bad for a new resturant
Birdhunter1 07-14-2007, 21:59 Kb's is what i was thinking about.
Whenever I was doing HVAc work and we had a job down at LOE we always went to Triple E, usually the boss even bought if he was with us. Italian beef or BBQ special with baked beans and coleslaw.
Yea, I just did a post about kb's too...Kevin and Michelle just opened it in Marion now because Goreville burnt. It is in the old pulleys building out by the fairgrounds right off main st. It is pretty good they just opened not to long ago.....
We luv our Triple E down here.......we also got sit a spell resturant next to Triple E and it is ok for a change but we usually end up at Triple E. The variety makes everyone happy!
What about this Crazy Joe's is that worth the drive?

Crazy....that is somehting my hub always wanted to do...we made a sign like that before but we called it BIG DADDY'S BBQ......
He used to be a meatcutter and takes pride in his whole process from selecting the meat, to serving it... Poor guy has to cook at all the family functions and everywhere we go now...
Resturants are a ton of work though..
sorry, I'm a little bored today, I can barely walk, got a "BOUT WITH THE GOUT" very painful, foots swelled up beyond recognition, had to go into work today for about 5 hours, we had just enuff rain that I couldn't paint on my camper, then theres the whole truck transmission thang, found out it's probably going to need a new transmission,
wah! wah! wah!
could I have some cheese with my wine please?
Hey, I did here that 17th street is supposed to run the restaurant at the shooting complex, thats good news! and the chicken wuz GOOO-OOOD!

Sounds mighty fine to me. We were gonna cook some bulgogi (Korean stir fried beef) by the Kaskaskia today but got wrapped up in fishing. I guess we shoulda made a detour to your place.
DetectDave 07-16-2007, 05:22 The shooting complex outside of Sparta is the new home to 17th Street or so they have advertised. I'm not sure if they have an opening date posted yet but I can't wait. Here's a link to the complex website info:
http://dnr.state.il.us/pubaffairs/2007/June/wrsc.htm
The press release makes it sound like 17th St is already taken over the operation there. I will try and call later today to find out. ROADTRIP!!!
DetectDave 07-16-2007, 05:25 Hey HUNTRZ, was that coconut milk or cream of cocount? The glaze looks nice and thick and tasty.
DetectDave 07-20-2007, 18:23 I was headed back from the clubhouse and drove by Crazy Joes just to see where it was. That place looks like it could be some fun. I'll have to try it when they're open. Fri & Sat 5P to?
Patti's Settlement is another GOOD resturant but Pricey, have you been there.....It cost us either 70 0r 80 I think but it was good...down south of Paducah....
Grand Rivers Ky....

DetectDave 07-20-2007, 20:07 Famous for their pork chops aren't they?
Here's Crazy Joes map link. I will add it to the list as well.

DetectDave 07-20-2007, 20:24 I called 17th St BBQ and they said that August 5th is their grand opening at the shooting complex. They are apparently already catering out of there.
Smokey Mc Pot 07-20-2007, 20:35 i think thats when i start working out there
[QUOTE=DetectDave;7112]Famous for their pork chops aren't they?
Yea. they are suppose to be HUGE! Two inches thick..I seen a pic of them. Everyone does get the flower pot bread and that good strawberry butter. They have the iron kettle resturant but I didn't go there..
They also have the little petting area, the goofy golf area, arcade, playgrounds, giftshops, and remote control boats!...Alot of people to there to get married and then have the reception inside (mr. bill's) patti's husband..Everything I mentioned is all right next to each other..
I really did enjoy it but like I said it was pricey for us...Def. an experience.
I have some pics....somewhere.....but it is much prettier in the summer. Everything was frozen when we where there.
Here is a pic I took at Patti's .....

DetectDave 08-20-2007, 04:47 I've been hearing good reports on a place called Honeybakers in Marion that has Hot Brown. Any thoughts there Bam?
Honeybakers is a place I only go with my girlfriend that I go shopping with on fridays......I love the bbq on texas toast with corn on the cob. You also get a roll with some kind of pink butter that is really good. You only get one, or else they charge you for it.
It is kinda pricey though....
They did have all you can eat ribs my hub got on sat night one time. I thik it was like 16-18 bucks for them though. He just won't go there with me unless I drag him there. It's kinda a foo foo place or whatever you would call it. Alot of older women and church people are there alot. They have little squares table with medal chairs and the menu is under the glass on the table. They have kinda werid hours too. They are really close by interstate 57 in the town and country shopping mall. You could give it a try and see what you think......I don't like pie personally , but I heard that there pies are suppose to be really good. They have them in the case by the door, they also have a card to fill out buy 5 lunches get one free. And they have specials on the door and the board up front as you go in.
http://honeybakers.com/ Here is a link......Looks like they do have HOT BROWN.....I never ordered it before.....Some people like the chicken n dumplins too.. It used to be called H and R dumplins but then it sold. It is something with a little different variety.....
DetectDave 08-20-2007, 07:52 Did this used to be little coffeee shop just before you hit 37 coming east from 57 on the right side? I used to stop in there for a ....yes...I hate to admit it...a cappuccino...while heading out to the goose pit. I'm not a big foo-foo fan although for hot brown, I might make an exception..LOL
No, this was H and R dumplins before it is right over by Ace hardware, If you was to get off 57 in Marion you would get off on the exit that says to Harrisburg. Then go to the stop lights and make a right there by Wendys...then a left by Fazolli's it is right next to Ace Hardware in the strip mall.
I think the coffee shop you are talking about it LATTA JAVA it is still out there. LATTA JAVA has only been there a couple years though......
My hub went with me twice, it isn't that bad , really......ALOT of people go there for lunch throughout the week. My friend and I go there on Fridays about once every three months or so....I always get the Memphis Pulled Pork BBQ ......
DetectDave 08-20-2007, 11:45 You're right..it was Latta Java. The good looking gals there never did say a word about my camos and me drinking that latte..LOL
You're right..it was Latta Java. The good looking gals there never did say a word about my camos and me drinking that latte..LOL
I think they just got broke into if I am correct......They came in took some money and also ate SOME COOKIES! Can you believe that? THe robbers stole the cookies from the cookie jar! lol
I can't believe some one would have the nerve to sit down and have cookies and milk while they are robbing a place but then again Im sure you have heard worse in your years on the force.....lol
lifestudent55 08-20-2007, 13:13 Those must've been some cookies. :D I was about to say something about being desperate for a caffeine fix, but the cookie line works too.
DetectDave 08-20-2007, 15:24 Being the trained investigator that I am...if I were Marion PD, I'd check this fella out first.
gretchensteele 08-20-2007, 18:40 Being the trained investigator that I am...if I were Marion PD, I'd check this fella out first.
maybe you should give them a quick call....not to long ago one of the bars here got broken into...all they took were all the tombstone pizzas, two cases of Milwaukees best and a fifth of hot (I'm an idiot for swearing)(I'm an idiot for swearing)(I'm an idiot for swearing)(I'm an idiot for swearing)....now just what does that say for the quality of criminals we have around here.....:D
lol that is too funny..I thought you were on to something there....lol....We used to call my brother cookie monster because he did the same thing growing up...lol
gretchensteele 08-20-2007, 18:44 hey Bam Bam..think Critter would go for Honeybakers for lunch tomorrow...or would it be a little too foo foo for him....I thought I might lure him in with the ribs....gotta go to the VA yet once again....
ummm. I guess.... not sure if they have the ribs all the time though and check the hours to make for sure they are open... Click on the link I sent ya.........We also have 17th street , triple e bbq and Pulley's BBQ(kb bbq) ....as far as bbq joints......For pizza I would recommend Waltz of course...and for really good Lasagna I would recommend Bennie's Italian foods...
Oh yea and they are doing construction again so be careful around there...I just left from there and it wasn't that bad but it was after 5......I grew up right next to that pond by the interstate..
ok, I tried OT hodges and it was good.....of course I was starving by the time I got there so anything would have tasted good......lol.......Hub, did really care for the chili but it was free anyway because I printed out a coupon online...lol.......The girls loved the cookies and milkshakes........they ate while I was at the doc, so they just snacked around when we went there......Kinda reminds me of a steak n shake or something ........
DetectDave 08-31-2007, 08:51 I meant to ask ya Bam about Pulley's. Last hunting season, I went by on two occassions and they were closed. I figured out of business. I'm assuming they are still open?
I already put a post on here about it......It's called Kb bbq now.....pulley's did go out but kb's is good......they used to be in goreville but it burnt so they moved to pulleys builiding.....
Since we are talking about resturants again have you tried the new KB BBQ in marion...
Kevin and Michelle Borum just opened it......It used to be Pulley's bbq which was out there since like 1900 lol......
it was out there forever and they finally built that new building next door!
Kb bbq used to be in goreville but burnt and is no longer open. The owners are really nice!
We went to the one in Goreville several times but only been to the new one once so far but the food was good and the service was fast as well..
I guess you could compare it to Triple E...it is right out by the fair grounds in marion on Main St.
hear ya go....
DetectDave 08-31-2007, 10:32 Thanks..I'll have to check them out along w/a roadtrip to this spot:

gretchensteele 09-03-2007, 06:54 That sandwich could feed a family of four! Hey Li - where exactly is Pulleys/KB? I've half looked for it when we've been down there..but I can't seem to figure out where it is....
It is on main street..all the way down main street.......right across from the williamson county fair grounds.......or you can go straight down Rt13 until you get to Fair street make a right then make a left on main st. and it is right off on the right.......If you go to the va though, just stay on main street until you see it on the right......now ya got a pic.....lol....
gretchensteele 09-03-2007, 21:18 LOL visual aids are always a help! Thanks maybe that's where we'll go for lunch after next months appointment!

Im telling ya, if you like italian foods, youll wanna try Bennies down by the square....my aunt makes a goood lasagna...I usually get a bbq and fries there. they also have good hot tamales from what I hear.........Just to see all the paintings in there is super nice.. It has been completely remodeled...My hub used to work with the guy that did the paintings....some of his work was out at the mall for 1000 and up ...just for one pic.... and that is NOT wallpaper on the wall ...it was ALL hand drawn if you look close......every line.....
It does get SUPER busy for lunch. Alot of working folks drop in there. My kids always wanna sit upstairs though and we have a certain waitress so that's prolly why we have to wait sometimes.....
DetectDave 09-11-2007, 20:51 Okay, here's the 4-1-1 on the new 17th Street BBQ that opened at the Shooting Complex. Their hours are as follows:

gretchensteele 09-11-2007, 21:50 I loved it! WE are definitely going there after Critters next VA appt....
No Dave we did not eat and RUN...
ohh....I guess that sounds bad huh........
gretchensteele 09-11-2007, 21:53 let them wonder....:D
DetectDave 09-12-2007, 08:25 I had it figured out. After some of those big ole smoked chops, ya'all wouldn't have been running anywhere anyway ..let alone a slow trot..:D :D
lol....I actually had a burger and g had a bbq....but naw, I know the owners and he was on hold on the phone, so I couldn't use my debit card so... he told me to hit him up next time......lol.....
I told g, only in SILO would that happen....lol..
DetectDave 09-12-2007, 08:34 I had it figured out. After some of those big ole smoked chops, ya'all wouldn't have been running anywhere..let alone a slow trot..

Ok so I didn't leave the country.......I went back for lunch and paid today....lol....
DetectDave 09-13-2007, 14:44 What's the skinny on that food place next door to EEE?
Ok, lets see ...we prefer triple e...but it's ok every once in a while......EEE is cheaper for us and faster for us and they know us so it makes it nice. My daughter gets mad if someone has"OUR" table.......lol.....
Anyway they have a buffet I think on the weekends.. chicken and such....they just switched owners not that long ago too.....
DetectDave 09-13-2007, 15:13 I see they have a fairly good crowd. I suspect EEE's overflow goes there.
Well usually it's the other way around.....lol......
I see they have a fairly good crowd. I suspect EEE's overflow goes there.
dave, your right, I don't know what I was thinking.......triple e is usually the one that is busy. On weekends and such yea, I could see that Sit a Spell would get there overflow. Alot of times we go in a 3 or so and it is dead at Triple e but that's fine with us.....
DetectDave 09-17-2007, 16:42 Okay...here goes for the chow of the week.
I went to:
Palace Pizzeria
618-893-4415
215 N. Appleknocker
Cobden, IL
and had probably the best pizza, (maybe ever better than Walt's) I have ever had. Owners Doug and Nancy pretty much run the show by themselves. They have quite a few lager choices and practically every kind of wine from nearly every winery in S. IL. I ordered a small salad w/ the house dressing which is kind of a Russian style or so it seemed and very good. Nice ripe Romas and a nice lettuce blend was quite tasty. Now on to the pizza. I order the 10 topper thing crust 15". I figured I could do some pretty good damage and still havea piece or 2 leftover. It came out by the time I was done w/ my salad and man did look good...and it did taste deelsi. It had so many fresh topping like 1/2 mushrooms, garlic, green peppers, pepperoncini's. I couldn't pick it up and eat it as it was too heavy w/ toppings. I used the fork until I was 3/4 of the way through it and then hand fed myself and proceeded to nearly cover my nice T-shirt w/ more toppings..LOL I was a mess.but I was one happy camper. I couldn't even finish half of it..so it was leftovers today. They have live blues music on the weekends and great piped in blues at other times. Lots of room...great host & hostess, and fine music. What more do ya want. Give them a try.

gretchensteele 09-17-2007, 18:23 Perhaps you should consider a part time career as restaurant critic..you do a great job with your reviews!
DetectDave 09-17-2007, 18:25 Thanks...I'm not sure my wallet and belt can handle it...only so many $$ and so many notches..LOL
They pay people for that for real....you just have to do a review on it and it takes like 6 weeks to get your check back but I actually considered it. lol.....dave you need to sign up! lmao
OK , so the choice tonight was giant city or bennies...........we ended up and picked bennies in marion by the square.... tonight because of the long drive over to g.c and the next silo shoot out is gonna be there soon, lol......I think , right G? lol..
Anyway, here is bennie's , good food, hub likes the lasagna and garlic bread, hot tamales are a fav there too..........Long story about the historic of the place, but it's kinda neat, will post another time when I am not so tired, just remind me....lol......
This was a very old building and John completely remodeled it.......It looks so different now and has an upstairs too............
Tommy drew the pics on the wall .....all hand drawn, even the blocks.....all the way up to the celings, on the poles and all.....He is an awesome artist.
I seen some of his work go for up to 3 grand out at the mall and you all know that's alot for this area!
Sorry didn't take no pics of the food.....lol....And you all know how the light is inside the rest. now.....low low low! lol... Oh and I didn't use a flash! yea! I just bumped up the iso! And did something else I forgot! lol!

chymerikaen 09-25-2007, 22:19 I love Bennie's. My husband's law firm is across the street catty corner to Bennie's so we eat there all the time for lunch. They have wonderful ravioli and tamales. I especially recommend their Hot Sicilian sandwich!
oh, chy we are regulars there...lol....lots of business folks come in for lunch.....we usually go in afterwards, Keri is my fav. waitress, I grew up playing down at the pond with her....she's like fam.......lol..
John actually held milky one night all night while we ate dinner and took him on a tour and ended up in his office with him until we left.......lol....
My aunt is also over the kitchen and my bro worked there a while too......My aunt makes the lasagna and such.......
Also my granny's in there everyday at 5:30pm! EVERYONE KNOWS THIS WOMAN! lol....She walks around like she owns the joint! ....That's just granny bert though and that's why everyone luvs her! lol.....
Did you see SNAPSHOTS building next door is empty now, I think we need to open it and called it SILO SNAPSHOTS! LOL>
lifestudent55 10-01-2007, 08:08 One of my coworkers tried this place and loved it. We haven't been there yet. Their specialty is German food. BAM, get B ready.
OK, did a google and found the place. It's called Dreamland Palace. Here's their address and phone numbers.
Dreamland Palace (http://www.dreamlandpalace.net/)
3043 State Route 156
Foster Pond, Illinois
Telephone : 618-939-9922
618-939-8851
oh lord, where the heck is this place now....you might just make his day life....lol....we aian't got no german food around here......
B is always ready....the other night we went to western sizzlin and they had a deal where if you ordered the BIG UN(steaK) and two sides and ate it all you got a 5 dollar gift cert. I said do you just wann give him the 5 bucks off now.......lol......needless to say he got another gift cert. you also get the food bar with that too.......:)
lifestudent55 10-01-2007, 09:05 They have directions to the restaurant at the bottom of their homepage.
DetectDave 10-01-2007, 12:16 I've heard that the food is good there as well although I have heard some conflicting reports re: the owners personality toward clientele.
Life, ya know you've got a German restaurant closer in Mascoutah at the Old Stein's 9...called Roemertopf. I haven't been there yet but I've heard food is good and reasonabley priced, Service was reported to be a bit slow.
http://roemertopfllc.com/
lifestudent55 10-01-2007, 12:25 We'll have to have BAM's hubby try it out for us and then have her give us a report.
DetectDave 10-06-2007, 20:22 Well, I have to report on 17th St at the Shooting Complex. I went there tonight w/ Mrs. F. There was a pretty good size wedding reception being catered in the main hall which worried me a bit but they were not close to eating by the time we sat down whcih made me feel a bit better. The waitress was very friendly and accomodating. My food on the other hand was disappointing. I have been a longtime cheerleader of the Murphy location and tried the Marion location and found it good but not quite as good as the home spot. Mrs. F had the smoked chicken. It was smoky and tender. I had what used to be called the sampler platter and is now called the Grand Champion. It runs right at $20. The 2 pcs of chicken were tasty but looked like they came off a cornish hen. Everything was just barely warm and didn't have the usual good smoky flavor. The brisket was tender but was again lacking the smoke or even a visible smoke ring. I typically like all of their meats w/out sauce just because they are so good and smoky and the Magic Dust does all that I need. This all needed the sauce for sure. The pulled/chopped pork was also not as smoky as I like it and was average at best. I got one beef rib that was way overcooked to the point that it was like jerky on a bone. I know beef ribs have a different consistency but it was not right. The baby backs came 2 half ribs in 2 sections, ie: 4 1/2 ribs. Good and tender but (I'm an idiot for swearing)(I'm an idiot for swearing)(I'm an idiot for swearing)(I'm an idiot for swearing) cool. The hot link was exactly what it was supposed to be albeit a bit cool temp wise but quite spicy heat wise. All in all, I was pretty disappointed. I didn't say anything to the mgr due to their other business but will probably call and just give them a heads up on how I felt. The total tab was $39 w/out tip which included 1 beer and 1 soda. I say ouch for the quality of food I got. Just my 2 cents worth.
Dave I feel ya....we been through the same thing there a couple times.....I think Murphys is alot better too....and isn't it cheaper over there? B really don't care for it at all anymore.....
I know it usually costs us 40-50 bucks if we go....and Im not so sure that it's worth it anymore.....they just have those darn fried pickles that I gotta have every once in a while and that are too much of a mess to make at home....lol
DetectDave 10-06-2007, 20:32 Ya I think they are cheaper. The last time I was there, that sampler cost me about $16 or so. I guess I'll have to stick w/ EEE or Larry's in Ziegler. Gotta have those corn nuggets..Yeah babeeee!!
lol.....yea b likes them too......
Walk about walker's did you ever try them....that's the place b ordered the trot line.....lmao...
I thnk you would like it alot....and it's cheap....we even drove over there when we were camping up at rend.....Kinda reminds me of triple E......
Birdhunter1 10-06-2007, 21:01 Everyone use to go nuts over 17th st. bbw, I never really cared for it much at all. The bbg pork was way too greasy, I've had much better ribs at Deno's house, but those onion straws and fried pickles are awesome.
Brown's BBQ that use to be in Murphy was awesome, but it closed and now it's a Mexican place called Sergio's that is worth stopping by if you're in town.
DetectDave 10-06-2007, 21:02 Is it on the north side of the road and the west side of Ziegler..or was it Christopher?
Here ya go DD, it's good eats.....B and I went there on a date one night and ended up and sat in the bar area but they also have a resturant area too with a salad bar......We have had to get a box everytime.......B didn't like the alligator tail though that came with the TROT LINE.....lol.....it's good.....somewhere you can go with your huntin clothes on and no one turns around....lol.
It's kinda hid down this little road but you can stil see hucks from there.......http://local.yahoo.com/results?fr=dd-local-more&stx=food+walkers&csz=Zeigler%2C+IL
Someone else, I think bowtechman recommended there chicken.....that's my unc's fav too.......
DetectDave 10-06-2007, 21:41 Well that is one spot I haven't been but I'll put in the DD travel guide of places to do.
lifestudent55 10-06-2007, 23:11 We've only tried the 17th st in O'Fallon. We had the chopped pulled pork. It was ok, but I've made as good. They charged more than the price listed in the menu too. I think they let it go to their heads after Bon Apetit named them the best rib joint in the country.
Life, where the heck have you been?
lifestudent55 10-07-2007, 01:10 I was fixing lasagna for dinner, then fighting problems on this computer trying to remove a corrupted patch to fix some software. I'm finally giving up on the computer for the night.
ohhhhhh ok.....well smokey made it interesting to say the least......thought he could out last us old folks......lol...

Awww. thanks DD,
yea, I made em at home before.....tried a couple different receipes too but I just don't like the darn mess.....lol....Plus, as soon as they are out of the fryer they are being grabbed left and right.....:D
But, IDK if we will be going back to 17 anytime soon.....sit a spell has em down here too and walkers in zeigler has em.....also a couple folks have the 1/4 whole dills but I don't like them as much as the chips....
You know they prolly can't be that good for ya either.lol....with all that sodium and greezzzzzz. Well have to check on it and see if pickles are good for anything.......:D :D I usually only order em maybe 2-3 times a year....
Life, look in here for Mary Lous.........really good homemade type food.....and cheap......next time you all come down we can meet there first if you want and get a "good start" .........Sometimes B worked on the side as an electrician over in C-dale and I didn't mind meeting him for lunch there.......:D :D Really good southern folks there....but I think they are only open until 2pm
Ok, just got back, so I did end up at good ol Walt's again tonight..This is where B and I had our first date...lol.....We ate at 8 on the 8th..lol....Anyway, we ordered a salad bar a some Pomegranate Margarita's and a large double decker pizza.....It was good as usual......These were takin with no flash again....I only had one chance after it arrive to get a pic too......thank goodness it turned out......lol.......

Pretty Close Bird....:D ROFL...that's why I only got one chance!!!!!!!!
lifestudent55 10-20-2007, 13:46 It was probably a race between your camera and his hand grabbing some pizza. Y'think?
LOL.......YEA, THANK GOODNESS i HAVE A QUICK CAM HUH....THAT IS ONE GOOD THING ABOUT MY CAM.......
He was eating the salad bar and I was messing with my settings in low light and no flash while we was doing that.....otherwise I doubt I would have got that picture........rofl
Life, you noticed no one got any shots of the all you can eat chicken dinner at the lodge huh? lmao.......
lifestudent55 10-20-2007, 14:10 Yeah, we had other stuff on our minds than taking pictures. Trying to get a camera up in that foray would've been dangerous.

That's never happened to you has it????  j/k j/k
lifestudent55 10-20-2007, 15:04 Nah, I'm usually fast enough to avoid that. Y'know now I'm gonna end up having to repeat that one on here so folks will know what you're talking about, right?
Nah, I'm usually fast enough to avoid that. Y'know now I'm gonna end up having to repeat that one on here so folks will know what you're talking about, right?
Naw make em wonder......
lifestudent55 10-20-2007, 18:17 Has anybody out by Carbondale tried Kaya Korean & Japanese Restaurant? Mrs Life and I like Korean and Japanese food and wondered if it's worth trying when we're in the area.
DetectDave 10-20-2007, 22:50 Hey Bam, ya know I can make those pomengranate martooni's for you and B and I think my pizza's on the grill are halfway edible...but ya gotta dress yer own before I grill it....roasted red peppers, fresh provel or mozz, pepperoni, grilled salsiccia, roasted tomatoes, basil, ....what else do ya want me to prep?
Man, DD I never heard of them before?? They were on special for like 3-4 bucks an the waitress suggested it......She said that they were really good even though I don't care for the pom. fruit really , they were pretty good.. They had a bit of twang in the aftertaste but they were pretty good.....Now DD you know you could only make them for B or for me........We gotta have a DD..........ROFL>>>>:D :D
I usually just get pepperoni and sausage...and that makes everyone happy..
Now if you were cooking that for b, he would take all of the above.......lol....
What is in the Pom Marg??? Tequilla?
You know pom. have to be good for something.... They date all the way back to biblical times.....
DetectDave 10-21-2007, 06:47 It's got pom juice, lime juice, triple sec & tequila.
My recent fav is prickly pear margs.....like a cross between a peach and a plum w/ strawberry....kinda..LOL
Restaurants here people...
I went to the Japanese Garden in Shiloh or Fairview (whichever over there) last night. The kind of restaurant that the chef is right there flipping stuff in the air, and lighting shtuff on fire... (I FORGOT MY CAM!!!)
I started w/ some smoked eel sushi and it was REALLY GOOD, they bring soup and salad as starters, then you get some sherbet at the end.
Then I ate a freakin NINJA!!! (Steak and Scallops #11) and it was delish. Now I am part Ninja.
All in all it was great fun, the food and service were a delight... aregato. (sp) but the prices are a bit steep... Good for an occasional special night out...
Oh and for a Sat night, you could have walked in and sat down... a rare occurrence in that area on Fri - Sun night in most places on that strip of eateries.
Sorry bob , so easy to get off track when you reply to so many post, I need to cut back.........I thought DD had his own resturant.........rofl......j/k j/k
Went to honeybakers again in marion and it was good as usual........DD seen the hot brown you were talking about..........they either have a new menu or new prices one.......lol.......the hot brown is 8.50 now does that sound about right??
They have lots of salads and such ......good to come in like for you lunch hour or something......that's what alot of folks do... The desserts are suppose to be really really good......I never have enough room to order one though..lol......
I had the bbq an was only able to finish half... It's pretty big and comes on texas toast.......I also got the baked beans and they taste really southern....a little too hot for me......:D Oh and the dumplins are suppose to be good there too.....they also have things like the elvis sandwich and fried bolonga too......just a little different than most places......I like to go every once in a while but B won't go there with me...He thinks it's too foo foo....:D :D ....
DetectDave 10-21-2007, 13:43 $8.50 seems a bit steep but I'm not sure how it compares to their other dishes like open face roast beef, etc. Bob, I'm hearing some pretty good reviews of that sushi restauarant across 64 in the O'Charleys area. Good as in better than Sushi across the big pond. I may have to get up there for lunch this week. Had a hankering for it enroute to the airport FRi but none were open until 5P.
Here's a link to the Ofallon one called Sake:
http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=sushi&near=Ofallon,+IL&fb=1&view=text&latlng=38588529,-89943416,5771626567239720139
lifestudent55 10-21-2007, 15:21 Let us know how it is DD. We went there for lunch on a Saturday once and had the unpleasant surprise that on weekends they're only open in the evening.
There's a pretty good Japanese restaurant in Edwardsville called Nori. It's in the strip mall behind the McD's on 157. In addition to sushi they also have several noodle dishes. It's not a tepanyaki place (knife tossing) like Japanese Garden so their prices for the most part aren't quite as high either.

DetectDave 11-04-2007, 15:07 Okay, I'm putting the feelers out. I've heard about these places and am looking for some first hand 4-1-1 on their chow:
Lick Creek General Store
Grand Chain Lodge
Tall Tree Lake
I heard about the grand chain lodge too and there is a website about it but I never been dave.......We need some good grub for tues....over by pine hillzzzz help us out big guy...
lifestudent55 11-04-2007, 15:57 We ran into the manager of the Emperor's Wok in O'Fallon yesterday. She said it closed as of Monday. The owner has been very sick for a while and has closed all but 2 of the 5 restaurants he did have.
FunGusAmonGus 11-04-2007, 19:32 Had a pizza there Fri... Those Hill Billys make a tazty Pizza....We ordered it and went to Shawnee Store and got our Amish supplies then picked up our pizza and hit Rock Crusher road to check out the deer and turkey. Oh I almost forgot HillBilly Pizza is located in Campbell Hill just off Rt 4. BTW Pyramid has a bunch of lakes closed to fishin.:) I guess they close them in the winter.
lifestudent55 11-04-2007, 22:41 I saw Hillbilly Pizza a couple weeks ago and showed it to Mrs Life. I got a good chuckle out of the name. I think it was when we were following Gretchen from Coulterville to Carbondale.
DetectDave 11-05-2007, 05:44 I've come dang close to stopping by there a number of times Fun but never pulled the trigger. What kind of crust?
FunGusAmonGus 11-05-2007, 07:10 I've come dang close to stopping by there a number of times Fun but never pulled the trigger. What kind of crust?
thick or thin... The thin it what we got and I though it was kinda on the thick side but it was till good..:)
lifestudent55 11-20-2007, 19:46 DDave, Mrs Life and I went to Sake today. We got a mild surprise...our server used to work at Nori in Edwardsville. Mrs Life recognized her right away.
Mrs Life found a Korean dish on the menu, hwae to bop. It's like a sashimi salad with rice and hot pepper paste that you mix in. I had the shrimp yakisoba, plus we had the vegetable tempura as an appetizer. The service and the food were great.
DetectDave 11-21-2007, 08:52 I'm glad ya liked it. I kind of worried throughout the afternoon and hoped your experience was a good as mine.
Fat_Matt 11-21-2007, 09:08 If you all like pizza ANJO's in Sesser is great. They also will dilliver to all the Rend Lake camp grounds. The wife and kids love the cinnomon sticks with white glaze on it. If i remember right large pizza, cinnomon sticks and bread sticks 4 sodas was around 25 bucks. We end up making a night of pizza and gokarts once a camping trip anymore. I don't think they are open on Sunday even on holliday weekends that sucks.
Kewl matt I didn't know that.......We might have to order that one camping trip.......:D
I was wanting to try that maid rite too one night? Has anyone been there........I sure dd prolly has.......Heard it was pretty good......:D
lifestudent55 11-21-2007, 09:23 If you all like pizza ANJO's in Sesser is great. They also will dilliver to all the Rend Lake camp grounds. A pizza place that makes great pizza and delivers to campsites? Wow!
DetectDave 11-21-2007, 12:20 I've seen Anjo's there in Sesser but was woiting for the right person to givge it the thumbs up. Thanks Matt. Thick or thin? Best toppings? As to the Maid Rite, I haven'ter tried that one. I'm just not a big Maid Rite fan in general and that is might peculiar as I like ALL grub! To me it's just kinda boring ground beef on a bun but there are others that just love it.
I have never tried maid rite at all..........One of my buds I met camping recommended going there but we decided not to since they just had the bar stools........we went over to larry's again and it was really good...
as for pizza are favorite is still waltz...oh and imo's too........waltz has that double decker that is pretty good........we went last night again and it was really good......I posted some pics before......the kids love the arcade there as well....It's nice for us so we can actually visit durning dinner sometimes too.....
Dave if you went there I would say try the double decker......salad bar is pretty nice....all fresh and they had a lunch buffet on tues and thurs I belive from 11-2.....on sun and mon they don't open until 4pm...........He also added a beer garden on outback just recently.......Granny Bert worked there forever ...she got the Hard Working Senior Citizen of the year Award up in springfield because walt and peggy turned her name in...........She was 75 at the time but could work circles around anyone down there I think.....lol...Her picture is framed by the check out, salad bar area....:D
It cracked me up because it said something like she cooks, she cleans , she slices, she dices...
Anyways enough blah blah blah.......try it dave durning duck season if your down this way......I think youll like it......:D
If you go Friday night Ill be there again.....lol......We are having a party for my bro in the party room! :D :D
DetectDave 11-21-2007, 13:41 I'm already a Walts' regular for pizza and I really like that spicy pasta ....can't recall the name.
Oh ok I would also recommend going before 5 if possible unless you wanna stand out the door! :D :D ........My friend's brother moved away to go to college wanted one so bad her parents got it and had it shipped however they do it not sure......We order from german deli.com and they have the little ice packet things in there and all.......Im thinking maybe they do that the same way not sure..... We also able to find some german items at the world market in stl as well......We dont have any german resturants around us that Im aware off.......
DetectDave 11-25-2007, 17:12 Bam, there's one up here in Mascoutah called Roemer Topf and the reviews have been real good. I can't get my fam to go so I may slip over there one day for lunch w/out them and report back.
http://roemertopfllc.com/
Dave that one looks pretty good....Next STL trip we are gonna have to stop in a one of them.....We also like to get imo's and krispy kreme so maybe we can make it a overnighter lol....:D
I seen the buffet too...I wonder if it is still all you can eat for B too....lol
lifestudent55 11-25-2007, 19:05 Bam, if you want some good donuts (better than Krispy Kremes IMO) you need to check out Mallo's Bakery in B'Ville.
As for waiting till you take a trip to STL, Mascoutah isn't that far from C'Ville. One of my coworkers was telling me about that place a while back. I don't know if he tried it out or not, but it should be pretty good. As for the buffet, if they see B coming they may panic.
Oh lord.....I need a silo list before I leave the house.lol... We will try just about anything......I am the picky one but usually find something to eat at most places....and well you all know how B eats.....lol
He was braggin to me the other day he lost like 10lb recently....I said only because it's been like 80 degrees durning hunting season............ROFL!
It's not that far? really? Ill have to look it up from loe though.....this gas everyday is killin us......
Went to BWW( Buffalo WILD WINGS) in C-dale again tonight and it was pretty good...I ordered the boneless wings in honey bbq.......B ordered the chicken wings in jerk and hot....WHOO! lol...I think I could smell it....lol........at least he didn't get blazin....Milky even grabbed one though and ate it for a min.........I think he realized it about 1 min too late....lol.......his nose starting running and he wanted a drink...It's one of those that aian't too bad a first and then it kicks in .......
Ok and some other things ordered where potato wedges, garlic shrimp ( which is really good) mac n cheese and the ribs.......everything was pretty good.......For people who have kids, there is a bar in there if that matters to you it's kinda like a applebee's or so.......They have several big screen tv's usually with the game on and several other tv's so you can play you trivia games or texas hold em......You just ask for a controller when you seated....or 2 or 3 however many you need.......and when the game starts you can play....I just think it's rigged or something though.Like, tonight on my first game I got every anwser correct but still came in 5 place I believe it was....:(
I think the same people sit there and play it and hit the anwsers really quick...(you get more points the faster you pick the anwser! )
Anyway we did have a pretty good time.......they also have a to go order area and right now buy 25 dollar gift card and get 5 bucks free or something like alot of the other places are doing........
I think are order was like 45 or so with tip and all......It's a little more expensive than like triple e or somewhere but nice for a change......It also depends on what you get and what they are having on special that night as well....I think tues. are wing nights but IM not sure........used to be tues or thurs......I woud have to check again.....
Bird, I don't wanna hear a word!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D
Birdhunter1 12-15-2007, 06:51 Braddsn and I had wings from there the other night, he said he had to see me eat a dozen blazin's. I got them, chowed down and surprised him when my face didn't cringe/flinch/burn/turn red/or otherwise act like them blazins were too hot.
I don't think I coud do the blazin challenge though, the whole 6 minute thing would get me I think.
lifestudent55 12-15-2007, 08:23 We ate and the BWW in Shiloh and liked it. We had the wild sauce which was plenty hot for either of us. I like the mango habanero. Kinda sneaks up on your taste buds before dancing on em with football spikes. :D
hillbilly8199 01-01-2008, 16:42 any 1 ever ate at bottoms up in jacob IL it is a great place to eat also
hillbilly8199 01-01-2008, 16:47 17th st aint as good as it used to be and to expensive for the food also
lifestudent55 01-02-2008, 06:01 17th st aint as good as it used to be and to expensive for the food also
Yeah, we noticed that too. My guess is they thought they didn't have to work as hard and could charge more after Bon Apetit and the Food Network gave them all that free press bragging about their ribs.
gretchensteele 01-02-2008, 07:29 Bottoms UP - a favorite stop when riding that direction..always have had good eats there..and if there's nut brittle for sale on the bar..it's worth every penny..I bought a bag there when Bam and I were there..oh my ... I forget just what the nut combo was but it was far better than plain peanut brittle...
BUCK STUFFER 01-02-2008, 08:58 pioneer cabin in willis ville has good fried chicken. latawata creek in fairveiw has good food and cool atmosphere. there chicken alanta is great dish, green
I have heard great things from multiple sources about a new place in Murphysboro called Cumares. It's a first generation authentic Italian Restaraunt. It's located on the south side of the courthouse in what used to be Mungo Jerry's Cafe. Everyone has said the pizza is simply amazing. I'm going to try it for myself after work today. Have you tried it yet Bird?
I'll post a review tonight.
DetectDave 01-02-2008, 16:39 Stopped by a new spot on the way home from FL tody after reading about it on one of my food boards. Uncle Joe's Deli located on the S/E side of the Ina I57 exit. (83mm) I tried their pulled pork sandwich which was $3.89 I believe. The cook gave us free samples to try up front. Very moist, smokey and plenty of meat piled up. I had the spicy BBQ sauce served on the side and Mrs. F had the regular. Both were deelish. My son had the gal make him a pork tenderloin sandwich which she said would take 2 minutes and 45 seconds to make and it did. Nice size and pounded thin. He declared it mighty tasty. I had some of their homemade mustard based potato salad and it was good too. They also have smoked beef, chili, gizzards and livers, fried bologna, breakfast biscuits, and all the other regular deli items too.
DD I seen that little shop several times but didn't know how it was......B fills up on gas there at the INA exit.....I would say they get at least 300 dollars of our money a month, we try to support our little local market as well.......lol
Anyway, glad to hear it was good...not really much around there.......we went to BWW again the other night and ran into a couple people from mt vernon again and one from w.f. ...MTV don't really have many places to eat....I got a room up there for like 4-5 days last year and ran out of places to try.....and sure didn't like whatever that pizza was.....I can't remember what it was now......The resturant in the holiday inn was really good.....I can't remember the name now but we ended up and dined in there twice.......
Also that little truck stop place in MTV wasn't that bad!
FRANKIE"S that's it......that's the name!!! lol
So is that fin inn worth a trip for B and I or not?
Looks like we might go to STL again this month or next month so Ill be needing some neat places to visit again...FITZ was pretty neat this last trip!
Heck I might even be going to STL with gretchen one night.....lol......
Ordered the delux pizza last night at Cummares in Murphysboro. It was very good, but not great. A lot of people were ordering pasta dishes, so I'll probably try that next time.
Franky's moved to the Green Grill in Centralia. The Mt. Vernon Holiday Inn now has a Krieger's Sports Bar.

Their Chicken salad sandwich is REALLY good for lunch. They have GREAT Specials too.
The Yellow Rose just traded hands... again...
DetectDave 01-30-2008, 06:41 That must be the one that Jason Wolf from Freeburg bought.
Birdhunter1 02-16-2008, 20:39 I have got to add "The Mulberry" in Murphysboro at 16th and walnut on the SE corner of the intersection. Excellent food, Lonestar or Red Lobster kinda pricing but much much much better food!
We each had a salad and all their dressing is made in house, it was a hard choice to decide between the three options but we each went with the house vinagrette. I had a Ribeye(rare-medium rare as requested), wife had a NY strip (medium rare as requested), each of us had baked sweet taters (broke my diet but it was worth it), desert cake was awesome (again broke the diet but was awesome).
Best part of all is it is part of Eatmoredonuts place, so not only are you eating a very fine meal in a very nice restaraunt and helping out local business owners you are also supporting a sponsor of SILO! If in Murphysboro it is worth stopping by!
MULBERRY IS CLOSED NOW!

Sounds like a good place......might have to treat b there next week....As long as I keep him fed good and he gets to hunt and fish....he's good to go!
Oh lol..I bet scott is in heaven too .....Donuts for b-fast and steak for dinner....:D

Anyone have any suggestions for a seafood/Asian restraunt? We liked Emperors Wok but it went out of buisness and the food at Red Lobster is really good but not worth waiting an hour or so to get into the building for(IMO).
We went to smokey bones this past w/e. Had a bbq nachos that was awsome! I had the steak and 1/2 slab of ribs that was really good. And the wife had the steak and shrimp that she said she liked.
We have never been there, I am a picker eater but I am sure my hub would like.......We went to that one in paducah ky. called hanonaki.......they cook on a big grill with open flames right in the middle of the table.... The tables are big and sit like 10 people. The cook is on the other side..kinda like a card table on the boat...but the cheapest thing they have is 21.00 I believe...And it was hot as heck in there because of all the open flames at the tables..............also marion has a new asian place called sao asian bistro but we haven't been there yet....my aunt and uncle went and said they liked it though.......
Dave, you don't have to put all those ones in STL on the SOIL list.......I was just wondering for our trip....
Ron this was from another thread...............

where are you at O'Fallon? Right next to Sam's is a lumberyard and across the street (Hy 50 I think) is a good Chinese Place. I don't remember the name but theres a hotel right behind it. E.W. I think is being re-modeled. I don't care for their food when I go there I only eat the crablegs.
lifestudent55 03-05-2008, 23:40 Ron, if you're looking in Fairview Heights, try the Ginger Buffet. It's behind the Olive Garden. Their prices are good, cheaper than the Emperor's Wok was, and the food's good too.
If you want to try Japanese food (the real stuff, not the tepenyaki), there's Sake next to O'Charley's (1325 Central Park Dr, O'Fallon, IL 62269). It's just down from where Emperor's Wok used to be. There's also Nori, another Japanese restaurant in Edwardsville just off 157 (1025 Century Dr., EDWARDSVILLE, IL 62025).

Yeah we ate there. It was pretty good. That same chain has a restraunt in Mt Vernon also. They generally have really good frog legs too.

Sounds good Life. Never saw that one over there. And I think we had already talked about Sake in our PM. Although I haven't made it there yet.
Last w/e we even were going to try Joes Crab Shack again. It was a hour+ wait as was Texas Roadhouse.
I also noticed that there is another restraunt getting ready to open up in the old Emp. Wok building.

That sounds like a good place to go on a date night for the wife and I. The daughter is a bit finicky though.
lifestudent55 03-06-2008, 08:18 If you want to go for steaks there's a new one by the maul called Logan's. They're good. The manager was explaining to us that their steaks are never frozen.
Next time you want to try the Texas Roadhouse you can call ahead for reservations. They'll give you a seating time and you just show up about 10 minutes before the time they give you.

lifestudent55 03-07-2008, 08:22 Fun, the Chinese restaurant across from Walmart in O'Fallon has changed hands again. I noticed the new sign yesterday. It's now Liu's Buffet. They were advertising their grand opening.

Thanks for the info Jim.. I hope they don't change the menu.. I really liked that one...:( I loved the hot n sour soup and the spring rolls and the sushi
lifestudent55 03-08-2008, 00:48 Emperor's Wok used to have some of the best hot and sour soup in this area. Liu's lunchtime buffet price is $5.99 and Sunday lunch is $6.99 (advertised on their sign).

I really like Bamboo Valleys Hot and Sour soup...;)
lifestudent55 03-08-2008, 01:01 We haven't been there for quite a while. When they first opened some of their food was lukewarm (like the sushi) so we didn't go back. I guess they forgot that axiom all restaurants should follow that any customer might be a first timer that will make up their mind whether or not to be a regular upon their experience that particular time.
Just an update..........b was wanting some fried calamari tonight and we had to visit granny in herrin so I made dinner plans to go to lomardi's and guess what...it's closed...:( I didn't know that.......
No more Lomard Cafe in herrin..:( I guess it's been closed a while......lol
So we settled on another place...mr. c's steak and italian or something......it was ok......they gave us all a bingo type pull tab when we paid which was kinda cool but a first for me.......:D :D
B and his buddy both ordered the 16oz porterhouses and they also had my fried pickles there...:D
lifestudent55 03-08-2008, 06:41 Fried pickles, another food I'd never heard of till working in StL.
The best place I have found, is my Mother's at noon on Sunday
gretchensteele 03-08-2008, 07:35 I bet it is Deno!
We never had, or even heard of fried pickles until year b4 last when we went to Rapid City.
