View Full Version : Are there Armadillo's in SILO
On a shed hunt today I saw a blur fly in front of me, and Nes was close behind. (Of course) I shout ARAMADILLO!!!, and wanted to be the 1st to post one here. NYA NYA.... So off I go... haulin butt behind the dog... (man those things are fast!) I'm bustin through brush and briars tryin to catch up to the two flying animals.
Nes runs the thing into a hollow tree.
Now you are MINE!!!!:D

chymerikaen 03-11-2008, 19:46 Neat - I've never seen one so close! My sister saw one outside Carbondale a few years back, and there was an article in the Southern about armadillos in SILO, but that was ages ago.
gretchensteele 03-11-2008, 19:49 Oh hOly Moly - YOU lucky snot you!!!!!
Hats off to winning the great armadillo chase!!!
I'm so proud of you and Ness...
Great now I'm gonna be on the hunt for armadillos..and I did enough of that when I ran West Texas...
Actually we used to hit them for sport and see who could sail them the furthest with the truck bumpers...I am so ashamed...I was young and dumb...(but they fly just like footballs...)
Fullstrut65 03-11-2008, 19:50 Looks like it would make a nice boot. Buuut since there is no season on them ( like the cougar ) can you kill it?
flatlander 03-11-2008, 20:08 Get Outta Here !
There are no armadillos in IL.
Thats just a bald opossum. :p
I wont believe you until I see a picture of you with one. :D
Go put your trail camera at that hole.
You're in cahoots with the dnr to seed armadillo's in Silo! LOL
Guess he walked across the bridge from MO?
gretchensteele 03-11-2008, 20:38 Nah he caught a ride on a Gilster truck.....ROFL
FunGusAmonGus 03-11-2008, 20:58 Great pic Bob ..I wish I could have got a pic of the dead on I seen on Baldwin Lake Road...
aw, come on BoB, that pic has been all over the internet, looked it up on SNOOOOOPIES!!!! that photo was taken in Houlabaloo Texas by a drunken Indian on a palamino horse without a saddle!
No, just kiddin', no, really I made that up,
That is one VERY COOL PIC BoB! I've never seen a cougar or an armadillo in Illinois.
carpsniper 03-12-2008, 00:42 Nice picture, but I'm givin' the credit to Ness! LOL
Bob-
Cool pic. By golly, there are armadillos in SILO!! Oh, and from the other thread...Nice shed fine. You da man! I was down on the river south of NA on Sunday but found no sheds...found some good turkey sign though!
Joe
I believe there is a woman at the IL Natural History survey that is charting sightings and roadkills as they migrate into Illinois. Some sort of research project.

:D Bob with friends like this you don't need any enemies! Great capture and cool story. Hope you listen to flatlander and set up one of your trail cams. So what does the DNR say about them being here?
Nice catch!
Now, if you could just get a picture of a cougar eating an armadillo...
Fame and fortune I tell you! :D
DetectDave 03-12-2008, 09:27 I wanna see the Big Muddy Monster fighting the black bear over who fights the cougar for the armadillo.
I saw one a week ago with the same scenario. My dog Spruce had something in the brush and I told her to "Get It". I was surprised to see an Armadillo run out and across the ditch. I yelled to Bob; "Did you see him". He said; "See what?". I said the Armadillo that just ran out. We didn't have the camera that day but now we know for a fact that I was right.:D

Do I take that to mean you will be joining Eatmore and I in our endevour to find the big Muddy Monster and some Big Muddy Catfish during those summer nights ahead? :D
DetectDave 03-12-2008, 16:57 Absolutely. I'm sure that the elixirs mixed up by Big Pappy and Deno will help us on that journey should they choose to accompany us.
Birdhunter1 03-12-2008, 17:36 A DNR herpatologist that I know told me there have been armadilo's in SILO. He also said they are big carriers of leporacy and shoudl be left alone.
we used to shoot them down in LA, they would steel the gravel from your driveway. And I don't know why either.
Then we would just toss em in the red river. :)
While this is true, I read yesterday that the only way a human could contract it is to eat the meat raw. Apparently in the depression they were eaten quite a bit.

Save me the neck! MMMMMMMMM Armadilloooo
lifestudent55 03-13-2008, 21:13 I've heard they make good chili.
Bob, I've seen a lot of armadillos that close, but they were all flat. If they're all that fast, how come they can't get across a road before getting run over?

OK, more from my reading the other day. Apparently their defense mechanism is, when startled they jump straight up, to about 3 feet. Fine and dandy if a cougar or yote is after em, but the bottom of a truck is only about 18 inches... end o story.
Also they eat carrion, easily found along roads. It's like baiting them out to the pavement...:p

That's why we were able to clip em with the truck bumpers so easily...I know Bad ..but man...running West Texas and the border desert can get really boring...

gretchensteele 05-08-2008, 07:58 Bob who would have thought..you are are going to be famous worldwide all because of an armadillo! Pretty soon you will need a publicist...
The moral of this story is..pack your camera along..you never know .....
It's really good to see positive news coming out of SILO and reaching the rest of the state and country...
not to mention..look at all the new people the web site is picking up!
thanks to one little possum on the half shell.....
Yep, I read it in the Centralia paper, listed source was the AP.
Found another truck yet? That ranger is gonna get small for your head.......LOL
Just wait until he get a shot of a cougar and see how many times that gets printed. Good going Bob.
