View Full Version : Snow Goose Decoys
Ok so I hear everyone talking about snow geese and how much fun they are to shoot soo.. I wanna start.. I have 4 dozen goose shells.. that i have lost the heads to.. Dont ask how i lost them unless you found them at rend lake and have a bunch of extra heads you wanna give me.... haha but. I was wondering if i could paint these decoys white and then buy some new snow goose decoys and mix them in.. would they work?? another option is to make heads for them.. I really cant think of how to do it though... They are standard G&H goose shells... I dunno just wondering if anyone had any ideas.... on how to make a head for these things. I thought about make a silo head on a stick... lol ... ive tried making some out of paper... ANy IDEAS:confused:
DetectDave 02-15-2008, 17:32 I would cut a head out of that corrugated plastic like that used by realtors for their signs and glue/epoxy it to dowels like ya use for rag dekes. Any sign shop will sell you 4 x 8 sheets for about $13 or thereabouts last I checked. That's about as cheap an option as I can come up with. I meant to say yes on the painting of them too. I'm sure some of my peers will weigh in here. Nodak Outdoors makes a paint kit w/a special UV paint that is supposed to stick out big time:

PD, Dave's suggestion is a good one, but I would also add if you have some other decoys (with heads windsocks, silosocks, etc) you could use the body of the decoy. Not all geese hve their heads up so it wouldn't look un-natural. With snow goose decoys, numbers are important, the bodies you have got would be good fillers.
fireduck 02-16-2008, 08:24 Im sure if you search G&H you can buy snow heads for them.
Painting them would be easy. They are just all white with black wing tips.
I would increase you spread with silosocks or deadly decoys to start. Those two look good and stay open even with out wind unlike north wind socks. stay away from texas rags. The birds around here got them figured out, and they tear up easy. Silosock sells an enocomy decoy. It the same as there regular decoy except its not put together and the sock is not painted. You can paint and staple a couple dozen in no time.
Once you realy get hooked then start getting fullbodies.
Im kinda scared of your last statment.. I think that i would become addicted and thats really bad news for me. I am a decoy fanatic. I'm trying to get my buddy to go in with me and start hunting them. I can just see me spending a lot of money on decoys.. I think im going to try it... Thanks for your help... I might just use them as fillers.. time to start looking for some decoys
riverrat85 02-16-2008, 09:55 to throughly kill big numbers of snows you have to have large realistic looking spreads. Im not going to lie to you its going to cost alot of money too. We hunt with mostly Avery snow and blue full bodies and the results are excellent. We use cheaper shells for fillers. We use anywhere from 400 to 800 decoys usually. These were killed last night.

You guys aremaking me jealous... Awsome pics.. I cant imagine shooting that many geese... How many decoys you think i need to just get started ... just to kill a few?? Think i can kill any over 100 decoys or soo???
riverrat85 02-16-2008, 10:49 yeah you can kill a few off 100 or so. What usually happens is you will pull 1 or 2 birds off the big wads as they fly over. Like i said before, the bigger, the better. Make sure you get yourself an electronic caller or two. They work wonders.
Full Draw 02-17-2008, 09:56 I'm with you PDsink, these guys are making me jealous. This is definately on my to buy list for next year!
Well I should be hunting them by saturday. We bought 5 dozen new snow goose decoys and throw in my painted shells with no heads we will have about a 100... fixed my electronic game call and bought a snow goose card for it.... Hehe I guess we will see what happens... :D
That's a good start, shouldn't have any problem in getting a single or a pair to break off and work you, just have to be snows in the area. Good Luck..
What if I added 100 texas rags.. ok well i bought 100 of them so i hope they work... If i mix 3 dozen silosocks with 3 dozen silos with 4 dozen shells with no heads with 3 dozen windsocks and 100 texas rags with 2 dozen full body canadians.. hehe maybe they will look like blues.. ok im starting to think that this snow goose stuff is way to addicting... the problem is you always need more decoys.... I know i cant buy anymore.... but i think thats going to be my spread. who knows.. hope to kill something haha
duckman1120 02-25-2008, 20:39 was thinking about getting some rags but we need to take them in and out everytime and was wondering how easy they are to put up and take down. also how many blues do you run with snows. thanks
Well thats a good question and I have no clue.... Everything i learn is from isp... haha he is teaching me everything... i will tell ya after this weekend how easy they are to take down and pull up... you gotta remember i have never killed a snow goose... but it all changes this weekend...going to go to carlyle and scout friday after i get done teaching.. find some birds... which could be pretty easy.... and then hunt them saturday sunday and monday.... wheww ooo.. if you wanna come along duck your more than welcome especially on saturday afternoon.. I dont think anyone is going to hunt with me... I wanna go again on monday but im going to have the same problem... no one to hunt with... isp that offer goes to you too.. you seem to be a goose killing machine....
