We ususally like to go to Rend Lake to camp. They also have the beach, the spillway( which have gar)and the visitors center right across the street. We usually camp at South Marcum on the south side of the lake. It has nice coves and real woody lookin! We like Covey Point the best. It has a nice playground, clean shower house, water, fire pits and concrete picnic table that make it class A camping. They usually keep really good care of the campground and mow it often. They also have tent camping as well on a point that is beautiful. You can go to Reserve.com and reserve the camping site you want up to 365 a year. South Marcum is only 3 miles to town the backway and you will run into a new super walmart and some resturants in Benton Il. On the north side it is nice as well. It has a nice resort and a Resturant that is called Windows(which is casual),they also have a hotel, cabins, gift shop and paddle boats. They also have pontoons and jon boats for rent. Down the road a little they have horseback riding which we never did personally. The deer are unreal up there at night. We counted over 50 one night just driving through.......The north side is alot closer to the shooting range which is nice as well. My husband and I used to go up there and they are really nice people. There is no membership and open all year I believe. They also have hunting up there like deer, goose, duck, and turkey! There are restrictions though........
There is also the Southern Illinois Artisan Shop which is pretty BIG and nice. It offers a gift shop and visitors center in there as well .......There are tons of Illinois Artisans in there!
And they have the pretty big golf course which we are not into golf but heard it was nice as well and it looks nice. They also have another beach on the north side that is nice but I think more for families with children. The one in South Sandusky is alot bigger and deeper.
They have tons of trails up there and some of them seem to go on FOREVER!
The widelife is wonderful. We had two deer come out every morning and just walk around like no one was there. The racoons come out at night alot though around the campsites. The fishing is ok. My husband did catch a 5lb bass that was nice last year and then we put out a trot line and caught some HUGE catfish and had them for dinner! LOL. We also put out some jugs in the middle of the night and that was fun...they started taking off every direction. Rend Lake could def keep anyone busy for a couple days and I am sure anyone could get some nice pics.

GREAT report on the area bambam. I know my wife will enjoy it. You mentioned all the things necessary for her to have a comfortable time. My kids are dying to get the camper rolling.

It is nice up there.....The park rangers usually take really good care of the campground.......South Marcum on the south side and Wanye State Park on the north are my two favorites.......South Sandusky is ok....you can look it up online to get more info on the area.....They even have pics of the actual campgrounds on some of them. I think it was a reserve.com......I will look into that some more.......

We usually camp in the state park. We haven't stayed at the Army Corp of Engineers campsites yet. A couple weeks ago we decided to stay in a cabin at the resort. That was a good decision then since it was so windy. We couldn't even get our boat out of the cove because the water was so rough.

One thing about Rend Lake (and also Carlyle) is the water gets real rough if it's windy. Otherwise it's an excellent place to camp and fish. We've had some good fishing off the piers at the resort when the water was too rough to put the boat in.

Garden of the Gods! Camp light and backpack it for a freaking great look at the Shawnee!

Another 4 years and my youngest boy will be 10+, the middle boy will be almost 16 and the big guy will be 19. That will be my next trip down there. Packing it - just me and the boys. Momma will most likely take a week at her parents vacation home in Fl while we do "guy things".

Guy things like trying to grab stars out of the black sky cause they're right there at your finger tips, right?. Do "remember whens" around a small glowing fire. And listening to the tent zipper at night to go out and pee!
