View Full Version : Indian Relic???
Hey all,
I saw this awhile ago, but didn't have my cam w/ me. I went back this weekend and got these pics. It's on a cliff along a creek edge probably about 20 feet up. I know there were indians in the immediate area due to a mound and arrowhead find. I don't think it would have been done in "modern times" The landower lived there his whole life and never knew it was there. What do you all think?

Well I wrote to a group who studies petroglyphs and such I found on line... the guy is from SIUC and sent me this reply:
Well, it is not Native American, Indians did not do face carvings like that in Illinois. My guess would be that it probably dates to the late nineteenth/early twentieth century and was done by someone living in the area who was of European descent. The reason I say it dates to that time period is that I have seen other carvings of faces, heads, etc., with initials and dates that date to that period. Before the invention of the car, people in the late 1800s to early 1900s recreated locally by having picnics, church socials, lodge outings, etc., in the country/woods and they often carved their initials, dates, and things like heads, faces, guns, barns, horses, boats, lodge symbols, Masonic symbols, etc,, on rock faces. All this pretty much stopped once Illinois had paved roads and automobile travel and people could get into cars and go places.
Another thing that makes me think your carving dates to ca. 1900 is that the rock face around it looks like it has a lot of vertical grooves that look like drill holes you would find in an old stone quarry. Do you know if this carving is in an old stone quarry?
Regards,
Mark Wagner
p.s. It is a neat carving, I appreciate your sending me a photo of it.
gretchensteele 10-05-2007, 08:32 Bob - the general style of the carving leads me to think it may not be an artifact..it seems too modern... however who would know? the scrape marks near it also look a little bit newer than the surrounding stone...who would you contact to get it verified or examined I wonder? Someone from the university?
That's stupid, but funny. I don't care who you are!!! Good one smoke
lmao-/.............:D
Kinda neat Bob, It also looks to have an arrow running through the head at an angle / ear to temple area and stops at each face line, Hmmmmm See it?
yup, I see it....Kinda looks like there is another head above that head too...see it??? lol....
LOL, in the top pic? yes if its where the left side is dark where the eye would be...LOL, I THOUGHT THAT EARLIER too, reminds me of that face on saturn pic....LOL
