Just saw in the local paper that the whooping cranes that made their way through Illinois were captured at Kidd lake and transported to Florida. A couple days before this, I spooked what I thought were swans out of the water in front of my blind. they made a most unusual and funny sound. I wish I had spent alittle more time observing them now even if it was early in the morning.

That's pretty cool. I heard they were spot in central IL and that they traveled to So IL, but didn't know where. Why did they transport them to FL? Did they decide to spot migrating? Maybe they had some Canada goose blood in them.

They probably wanted to make sure some good ol' boy didn't try to put one on the table for New Years.

Same here on getting out Gretchen. December was just a blur for us. My camera's gotten hardly any use at all the past few weeks.

Yeah I hear they are pretty taste. Kind of have a bald eagle flavor to them.

I knew someone would come up with a line like that. I guess they're a little more tender than spotted owls, right? :D

G, I have a friend who knows exactly where those cranes where this years and I told him that I was going to hook you up next year in the event they stop back by. I have been kind of following these cranes for a couple of years as they were raised just about 8 miles from our WI cabin and I think it's quite an undertaking. We might need the Hubble as access might be from afar next year. We'll see. If not, you can come up to my place in WI and get them au natureal.

I saw a whooping crane up in Wisconsin a few years back, couldnt believe it was one, so called the DNR who hooked me up with a Canadian group that was tracking the birds. I talked to this guy on the phone for quite awhile, very intresting. He said what happens with these Whooping Cranes is they are none to bright and get confused on who they are and can actually get attached to Sand Hill Cranes or even Canadian Geese, it screws up their own migration pattern and if they dont bring them back to where they started and let them try again, they will stay lost and stop breeding.

P.S. It was a beautiful bird! and very big!
