Actually you can train these guys for hunting anything! [maybe not carp]
Just shipped up from Gulf Port Miss. This is Spud the 2nd. He is a Blackmouth Cur out of the Ladner line. Great tree dogs for coon and squirrel and can even hunt hogs.

OMG he is a prize...I can't wait to watch him grow this winter and spring...I just love hounds....who am I kidding I love anything with four feet and fur...
Took some pics of the pup during his early training today. He more than doubled in size in the last month. I put a few drops of coon or squirrel scent on an old sock and let him chase it........while its moved with a fishing pole :-D He has alot of fun playing and is getting the scent of his future prey in his nose. Always let him get it at times, and it always ends up going up a tree. The pics with him on the block target are interesting.....its where a grey squirrel likes to sit and eat seeds from the feeder. He loves to play but you can also see some good early tracking instincts in him. Next....carp scent!

Nice looking pup, I've always heard guys talk about squirrel dogs but have never seen one operate. What exactly do they do?
Nes works squirrel, heck she's just a great meat dog...
Al I do is walk around, when I see her leaning on a tree, I better look up. Just works...
Great lookin pup.
Nes also HATES carp... chews on every one I shoot, and has grabbed slivers outta the air.
I think labs can be trained to hunt anything. Smart smart dogs.
The Curs and Feists are breeds that have been used for squirrel and coon hunting for a long time. the BMC has always been a multipurpose dog that will hunt hog in the morning, squirrel in the afternoon and coon at night. You can train them for anything too, but they have an instinct to tree game and then follow the game from tree to tree as it moves thru the tree tops. They dont range as far out as a coon dog will and are silent on track, only barking when the game is tree`d. There are alot of big money field trials using them thru the south.
I'll have to get out the fishing pole early and try to start training my 4-month old feist in this manner. Any other training tips?

Just show the pup alot of squirrel. I have a small box with a hinged lid mounted on a tree. I fill it with corn once a week to keep lots of squirrel activity in the yard. I let the pup sniff around there and once they get bigger they will start treeing. I also will live trap a few and put the trap up in a tree. Same with coon. Not too many though or they always expect to see a trap. Here is my 6yr old feist.....
