View Full Version : So what is your rimfire
Birdhunter1 12-02-2007, 20:13 I was gonna make this a .22 thread but some people choose other rimfires over a .22 so what is yall's rimfire rifle of choice?
I have a few, 2 of which I've never shot, but my .22 of choice is a Ruger 10/22 std. carbone with a 16" barrel and has a Simmons 4x32 scope on top. It won't quite drive tacks at 25 yards but will knock a nut out of a squirrels mouth shooting CCI Stinger hollow points.
My second choice would have to be the Marlin 925, 22" barrel blued steel on a hardwood stock, that I got my nephew a few years ago for Christmas. Last year once he had learned to shoot iron sights rather well I put a scope (Smmons 4x9x40) on it and it really makes the gun into a top quality soda can destruction device. I've tried trading him my ruger for it but because it is his first gun I it is from me he won't do it.
So what is your choice?

Well said, I'm thinking about getting a new stock that was a pistol grip, M4 style telescopic stock, and picatinny rails (maybe try and find a bipod and get my 3-7x scope sighted in more accurately at 50yrds). The 10/22 is also much easier to find high capacity mags for (looking for a good 50 round mag at the moment) and replacement/aftermarket stocks for since it's pretty much THE .22LR gun. If you get one get it in stainless steel since it's still easy to pick up under $300 and is more durable. Also, don't forget that any $20 scope works just fine, we have one on our Ruger that's accurate at 40yrds and another on our .22WMR lever action that's accurate at 100yrds (at 100yrds the .22 Mag has same velocity as a .22LR at the muzzle).

The .17 HMR is the most impressive round I have shot in a long time. With a relatively cheap BSA Sweet 17 you can consistently shoot groups the size of a dime at 50 yds. I have the Marlin 917 with a factory HBAR and believe me the accuracy is incredible. It plays hell on blackbirds out to 125 yards.
Bowtechman 12-19-2007, 22:09 i have a 10/22 for rabbits and a marlin bolt action with a scope, love both of them.
Hey Wolf don’t buy the Ramline 50 it sucks, or it was a waste of my $. Butler creek 25 are awesome though.
Birdhunter1 12-19-2007, 22:15 The good magazines to fit a Ruger 10/22 or 77/22 will have steel lips instead of plastic lips. If it has plastic then forget about buying it, shells don't feed out of it very well, you cannot get them out by hand and the ones I have used don't seem to fit in the gun well and take some jockying to get them to lock in.
I have three mags with plastic lips and three with steel lips, the steel lips always feed well, lock in place easily and you can unload them by hand.
Bowtechman 12-19-2007, 22:26 yeah im to cheap to pay for steal right now

I noticed that when shooting at some left over pumpkins that were rotting (made wonderful targets) the 30 round clip had a small fissure forming that made rounds jam by holding them in the clip. The clip has put up with over 1200 rounds though so it was well used. I looked at Tapco and found something worth a look, a 50 round belt system clip that has steel lips.

Birdhunter1 12-19-2007, 23:51 At $75 it ought to work well!
Bowtechman 12-21-2007, 13:15 my buddies got one like that i think, it can be a pain to load, but should work good.
anthonyk 12-22-2007, 14:54 I shoot a savage in the 17 variety with a "fancy" post style reticle red dot. I know it sounds strange, but since it is a coyote rifle, I gain sight picture quickly. Point blank range of 22 yards provides 175 yard shot with no drop. Peak of the "rise" is 3.5 inches at about 100 yards - allows me to lolly pop the critter as I watch him run in. Greatest public land hunting rifle ever built.
I have a 10/22, that I have had for over 30 years & a 77/22 mag, with a scope.

It's like the Ruger rotary, in a belt form, and 50 rounds v. 10 rounds. It seems like it sticks out quite a bit though, so I might get a 25 round steel lip for plinking and pick up a second Ruger rotary clip for hunting (got a $20 Wal-mart card to use up).
I shoot a Marlin 880SQ .22 for squirrels. It is bolt action, 7 round clip, and has a bull target barrel. I've been thinking about getting one of the .17 cals, but heck, I haven't squirrel hunted in 2 years so it'd be hard to justify buying it right now.
