Around Highland the ducks have been slow, could have killed lots of geese, but the season has been out and will come back in tomorrow. The new weather system coming in over the weekend should bring some new birds down for all in southern Illinois. A winter storm warning has been issued in northern Illinois, most of Wisconsin and parts of Iowa and Nebraska. The weather system is supposed to be followed up at the end of the weekend with cold NW wind. Temps lucky to get out of the teens in Wisconsin,Minnesota and the Dakotas early next week. All water should be hard by beginning of next week up there. Hope the ducks and geese follow the rules....:D
Hope to surprise the geese that have been teasing us the last five days. We will see if they cooperate in the morning.;)

One of my buddies hunts the river in that area. Last weekend it was real slow for them. Never killed more than 3 birds.

I saw very few ducks at Baldwin..very very few...
Geese were moving in hoardes..but duckies were a little slim...
Did notice yesterday that the duck numbers at Pyramid were starting to pick up.

It was slow here today too, thought the weather would get a few southbound, really disappointing since the weather to the north is just what the doctor ordered. Hope they are in the wind tomorrow, I don't know what it takes to get waterfowl moving south anymore...

I shot two northern shovelers today at carlyle. My partner missed three but it was a decent day with not a lot of birds but just enough to keep you happy. This was the first time out for me this year since the deer were just not cooperating.

Finally seeing a few more ducks/geese. According to a couple other field editors on the www.waterfowler.com site Wisconsin/Iowa/N.Illinois are that the birds are very active and they are seeing lots migrating birds the last two days. Some reports from Iowa advised they are seeing large groups of migrating ducks/geese SB, they haven't seen flights like that for several years. Hopefully they continue their S/SE flight.
WGN weather also said central Wisconsin to Chicago are expecting 6 inches of snow tomorrow night, might get a few more down here.;)

WGN weather says it should snow (3-6 inches) up in N. Illinois and central/southern Wisc with strong NW winds, better get out there tomorrow. We had no wind today had several groups look at us but wouldn't finish with the lifeless decoys in the water and skim ice. Went out this PM to change a few decoys around with the strong NW tomorrow and had geese in the decoys.......go figure. Should have brought the gun...
It is really icing up in Iowa and Wisconsin, they are reporting 2-4 inches of solid water, so that should help us too. Did kill a few mallards this morning but the geese were a little smarter.

Bad, Bad, Bad I thought with all the weather we are having especially north of us we would see some new ducks and geese. Only thing I got the last two days was wet. Did scout a little this afternoon and saw a few more birds in the air, hope the birds north of us get tired of the snow and ice and head our direction, we are under an ice storm warning here tonight and tomorrow, folks just north and northwest of me are getting a pretty good ice storm, ameren is reporting tens of thousands out of power NW of St. Louis and Central Illinois. We don't need that, we do need some new birds though...:rolleyes:

I went out with two buddies on Friday in Carlyle and we got 7 birds but once again had just enough action to keep us busy. We saw a lot of birds before shooting time but once it was time to shoot they new that they shouldnt be there and headed off. Planned on hunting Saturday but mom broke her wrist Friday night and was at emergency room until midnight and could not get out of bed the next day. I plan on hunting hard the next couple weeks especially during Christmas Break. I hope we dont freeze up by then and it stays cold up north and those birds get down here.

Had a few more mallards in the area today, killed a couple along with a beautiful drake canvasback and a dark goose. Snow should bring a few more our way, snow is going to be throughout most of Illinois this weekend.
Met with a couple of guys this afternoon north of Carlyle Lake, they came down from the south side of Chicago, I met them on another waterfowl site. They are here to hunt ducks, they did alright today at the walk-ins. I am saying this just to say how fortunate we are to have alot of places to hunt ducks. They are killing the heck out of geese up around Braidwood and wanted to come down here to shoot some ducks. I am planning a trip up there next week for a few days of goose hunting. The computer is a great way to make contacts, take advantage of it....
These guys have killed 170 plus geese up there are wanted a change of scenery. I don't think I would get tired of hunting geese...:D
