Ky and PA have elk seasons now... for a lucky few that make the draw... any other states East of the MS that have a wild population?

The Rocky Mountain elk subspecies has been reintroduced by hunter-conservation organizations in the Appalachian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appalachia) region of the eastern U.S., where the now extinct Eastern elk once lived[22] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elk#_note-appalachian) After elk were reintroduced in the states (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._states) of Kentucky (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kentucky), North Carolina (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Carolina) and Tennessee (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tennessee), they migrated into the neighboring states of Virginia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginia) and West Virginia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Virginia), and have established permanent populations there.[23] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elk#_note-rmef) Elk have also been reintroduced to a number of other states, including Pennsylvania (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pennsylvania), Michigan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michigan) and Wisconsin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wisconsin). As of 1989, population figures for the Rocky Mountain subspecies were 782,500, and estimated numbers for all North American subspecies exceeded 1 million.[24] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elk#_note-Peek) Prior to the European colonization of North America, there were an estimated 10 million elk on the continent.[15] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elk#_note-facts) Worldwide population of elk, counting those on farms and in the wild, is approximately 2 million.

Shawnee is the only place big enought to MAYBE house them they need large tracts of land to roam.... Used to be over 10 million in the us before europeans came...

I guess I should have added that to my question, :) is there even suitable habitat..I was thinking that they needed way more space than we have around here..
Thanks for the education! my SILo lesson for today :)

Not sure Bob, just remember hear-say years back about DNR was gonna do a study on it what ever that meant???, they used to roam here why not bring them back, oh yea, to many folks didn't like the idea of them being on the road way or something like that....... You know that they would do well here, and that would really get the blood pumpin early in the a.m. walking under the tree. You don't gun hunt? or just this season?

Was reading on them in REDORBIT, this is what they reported as of 2005,~ In recent years the elk have dispersed steadily from Kentucky, North Carolina and Tennessee into neighboring areas like Virginia and West Virginia and these herds appear to be growing slowly but steadily in population. ~ not sure about the states that have a season tho other than what you said.
