The Story...
Well, finally got a buck, got this buck Saturday morning after missing a giant at a ridiculously close range. I was taking pics of the leaves and sunrize around me when I heard footsteps behind me, I slowly turned my head and there was a huge buck standing 20 yards away and facing me, now I was still sitting down with bow across front bar, I looked away from buck and started to hyperventilate and shake wondering what I was going to do, I waited and heard him walking my way, I was afraid to look at him, when he passed behind my tree I stood up, when I did he turned and looked straight up at me, when he started to look away I started to draw, he spooked a bit but only took a few steps and stopped, by this time I was complete mush, hyperventilating & shaking as I let the arrow fly without even looking through my peep, missed him completely, DANG I hate when I do that, he ran out about 35 yards and stopped to look back (& laugh I think), anyway as I sat there kicking myself for blowing another chance at a good buck I had two 1 1/2 yr olds come in, they were starting to square off like they might spar, so I have the camera out again taking pics of them, the one buck kept looking over his shoulder, I looked back and here comes the buck I ended up getting, not really as big as I was hoping for, but he stepped into almost the same spot as big one I had just missed and I decided to shoot to redeem myself, drove it down into his heart, as he ran off the arrow was sticking out pretty far, which had me worried but I knew the angle was good, I thought I heard him crash after about 10 seconds, after waiting 15 minutes I climbed down to look for blood, NONE! after a slight panic attack I went across the creek for a quick look before I went to get someone to help who wasn't as frazzled as I was. I glassed the woods and saw him laying 100 yards away! WHEW!
no exit hole and the only blood I found was all within 5 feet of where he laid.
2 1/2 yr. old 8 pointer, f.d. 146 lbs.
here's a pic of the small buck looking over his shoulder at the one I ended up getting.
