Date: Monday, Feburary 12, 2007
Location: Lake of Egypt
Lake Temp: Froze (South End) 54 (North End)
Bass: Good Catch (30 Crappie) Limit
Wind: 5-10 mph S - SSE
Air Temp: 36 deg.
Barometer: 30.14
Conds: Cloudy
Arrival: 5:45 am
Depart: 9:30 am
Upon arrival the morning was cold and cloudy with showers moving in. I new there wasn't much time
to fish before the heavy rains came.
I launched my boat and went straight to work. My first and only rod of choice was my Shimano Spirex
with a 7 foot medium rod, lined with 6 lb fluorocarbon.
I fished the main lake area on the north end, staying in the warmer water where the temperature was 50 -
54 deg.
I started fishing the outside edges of weed beds with a jig. After making a pass down 3 or 4 good
banks I had no luck, so I decided to try some brush piles.
I went to my first brush pile and picked up just a couple of fish in the 3/4 pound range. I pulled up the
trolling motor and idled to the next brush pile, and they were STACKED! When you find ' em like this
you can't help but to get that tall grin on your face:) There is just something about reeling in a slab on
almost every cast! Twenty of the crappie weighed at least a pound or better. While two of them bumped
the 2 pound range. The other eight was in the 3/4 pound range.
Now I guess you are wanting more info about the lure of choice. The color of the 1/16 ounce curly tail jig
was black with a chartruese tail, casting into 3 - 4 foot of water with a slow retrieve.
Always try working the weed beds and brush piles for crappie with jigs or minnows, which ever you prefer,
and remember, slow down.
