View Full Version : Your 1st Deer, let's see it!
OK, I'll start out here, this is my first deer, a bowkill from 11-11-88, VeteranZ Day 1988. I had been bowhunting for 4 years, with some tuff luck, you were lucky to see deer on our farm back then, anyway, I rattled this little buck in and shot him at about 12 yards, he almost passed me up I had to whistle to get him to stop, the shot was severe quartering away, I knew it was a good angle, after the shot I ran, RAN over a 1/2 mile to my bud, when we got back to where I shot we saw some blood with some gut material in it, he said "AWWW GUT SHOT!" the deer only went about 60 yards, was a perfect shot coming out right behind his opposite knuckle on front leg, you can see the blood spot, back then I was shooting 160grain Thunderheads! on full length 2317 aluminum arrowz,
"COME ALONG & I'LL DRIVE IT HOME, HELP ME I DO DECLARE, IT"S A FREE-FOR-ALL!"
check out that 10 gallon cap! free with a bottle of tinks back then! ya gotta love the white cotton long johns too, no wonder I always froze...and the face paint, I wore that stuff every time I went out, I think my neck is still stained from that stuff!

I was happy! VERY HAPPY!
I do have a kill on tape, took a girl with me once and she filmed me shooting a doe with a gun, bad shot, then we chased it for 3 hours and got the finishing shot on tape too.
I did have it mounted, twice, first time the bugs got to it, so I had it redone with the hide from a buck my wife killed,.
KINDERGARTEN! GEEZ YOUR A PUP! OR am I just OLD?
oh......you should submit it.....just to amuse use...
mounted twice.....I didn't even know you could do that.....I wanna see some of your mounts???? and then took your poor wifes buck AGAIN.......

For our younger veiwers, that is old treebark camo.
That was cutting edge stuff, at the time. :)
Thanks for sharing.
I still have some of that treebark someplace too... I heard they were gonna put it back on the market?

My first bow case was treebark and I still use it to this day, bow is in it right now.
My first deer kill (doe) was in 1991 living in Wi I killed it with a 300 Win Mag from about 150 yards, didn't get a picture.
The first deer I ever killed and the last time I gun hunted, it just wasn't the same as using a bow.
To me it wasn't much different then playing a video game when you can reach out a get them from that kind of distance.
Fullstrut65 10-04-2007, 20:22 That is the first camo I can remember, other than the military camo. I still have a pair of treebark cover-alls I outgrew. ( not height)
Bowtechman 10-10-2007, 14:14 in 1988 i was TWO, ha. ill try to get some pics on here.
DetectDave 10-10-2007, 14:49 Mine was in 1980 outside Macomb, IL. I had an old Mossberg bolt action 12 gauge that was inaccurate as all get out. Saw a nice 8 point and aimed for a good through and through heart/lung shot and hit him right square in the melon. Dropped like a rock. Was that luck or what?..LOL
My wife, Mrs. Huntrz' first bowkill deer.
she got this in 2000 on public ground while I was at work  , the owner of our company came into my office and said, "Huntrz, (not my real name), your wife called and she just killed a big buck!", I was like "whatchou talkin' bout willis?, dont be messin with me" he said "no really, go home she needs help tracking it", anyway, back to the hunt, she went out on some public ground by herself, packin' in an API climber, she set up and hunted awhile, got cold and decided to get down, on her way out she bumped into a doe that came out of a grassy field right in front of her, and there she was bow in wrong hand, no arrow knocked, the doe ran to the right, then she heard a grunt and this buck stepped out standing broadside, looked right at her and ran off away from her in opposite direction of the doe, about this time she was getting pretty depressed, thinkin, "Well, he was right, DANGIT!" I had been hammerin' on her to always be ready during the rut, keep an arrow knocked and go slow when coming and going to stand, anway, for some reason she backed up into some brush set her stand down, knocked an arrow and started gruntin like a psycho-buck-in-rut!, this buck circled around and came marching down the same field she jumped him in and stopped at 20 yards broadside, so she let 'er fly, we only had to track it about 150 yards, she got the liver. I was and still am DANG PROUD of her :D . a week or so before that she was talkiing about hanging it up, I kept telling her "You are so close and don't even know it", she was packing in a climber on her own, picking her own spots, using a wind puffer making sure she always set up downwind of where she thought the deer would come from, she had become "The HUNTRESS".
she has since killed about 4-5 more deer with her bow on public ground, most hunts without me, (she calls me to come gut and drag them out for her), and I don't mind at all.
I sent this picture into the local paper and they put on the front page with a short blurb about her "Gettin' the Point" then went on into a story about the upcoming gun season.

Birdhunter1 10-10-2007, 23:42 Huntrz that there is a woman to be proud of, I am very proud of mine as she is still an up and coming outdoorswoman. She does catch and clean her own trout (and other fish), and she will clean my birds often and butcher deer (was mad the last two I brought home already had the guts removed) but she won't hunt over the dogs. She is too afraid she might shoot one. Up until when she had met me she had grown up around her brothers and dad who hunted and fished alot but she had never hunted or even shot a gun. Once I put a fly rod in her hands and taught her how to use it I created a monster, once I put a 9mm Springfield in her hands and showed her how to operate it I knew I was in love.

Right On Bird! The Couple that Killz Together, Stayz Together!
cuz if ya try ta leave 'em they'll shoot your..butt!
Birdhunter1 10-10-2007, 23:50 My dad says that teaching her to shoot effectively may have been one of the dumbest things I have ever done, and I have done some pretty dumb things once or twice.
My dad and I both have worked with her to shoot clay pigeons, some days she's on somedays she's not.
She's kinda bummed this year, she didn't get to go trout fishing.

Ok I think someone is tired here.......lol.....that is too funny.......but true!!
I aian't the best shootin the clays but I think I could hit Beeezzazzzz!:o :o
Birdhunter1 10-11-2007, 00:01 The bad thing is I taught my wife to shoot, meaning if she was to fire at me she would probably hit me where whe wanted to hit me...and with a 15 shot clip +1 in the tube maybe 16 times worth of wanting to hit me!!
Speaking of which I taught my mom how to shoot about 2 months ago with the same gun, she's been married to dad for 29 years and never had a desire to shoot till two months ago.
Men on here, women seem to like the Springfield XD pistol, my wife is 5'11" weight not mentioned (I ain't dumb) and my mom is 5'5" +/- a few and maybe 140-150 lbs 9sister about the same) and the all like the grip, feel, recoil (or lack of) and the ease of operation (all levers, safeties, indicators etc).
Bam tell B to get you one!
Yea, Ill tell him to get me something to shoot with.......a REBEL XTI!:D :D

DShafer99 01-05-2009, 10:19 Here is my first deer kill and not only was it my first deer kill it was the first time I ever hunted and it was taken with a 20 year old PSE. I wasnt in my stand for 10 minutes and this guy came. Saw him drop 50 yards away. Called my dad to tell him what I did and he had no clue I even hunted. Now I'm addicted to it.

DShafer99 01-05-2009, 10:20 does anyone notice the rookie mistake I made in this "archery" picture?
Birdhunter1 01-05-2009, 10:22 The blaze orange hat or the white T-shirt?
DShafer99 01-05-2009, 11:19 blaze orange hat! I had a camo jacket on but shed it for the haul out. I had always seen my dad wear an orange hat when he hunted so I wore one too. He still wears a blaze orange hat when archery hunting just for extra caution
Didn't make a difference, did it?
First deer, taken last year 1st Season.

Didn't start deer hunting till 96 first with bow then with shotgun. Was into waterfowl hunting bigtime prior to Deer & Turkey.:)
I think I went out about a dozen times for my first Bow kill.
Chris Schoentag 01-06-2009, 16:38 My first kill was in 99. Hunted since 86 with a bow (without luck) and finally got invited out to shoot with a gun. Didn't know what to do. By the time my brother in law found me I literally looked like I cut the thing open and crawled around inside. Blood EVERYWHERE face, hat, back, feet, everywere..... (I'll have to find the photo) I was happy as heeeack baby. 5 1/2 point buck. First and only wall mounter was video taped by my daughter. Named him "click" after the sound my safety made when I forgot to take it off, wont repeat the sounds I made in the video but he gave me a second chance. Have video of this years doe with my son. Still working on first bow kill. It's all I'll get now that the boy wants to shoot the meat. ;):)
Here is my first Whitetail buck kill 2 years ago. I hunt in heavily hunted woods in Michigan usually so any buck there is good. Ive taken 15 or so whitetail does but always let the spikes and forks passs. He was my first and I was proud as heck of him. Lets just say Ive been deer hunting since I was 12 so Im no rookie hunter! I got him opening morning around 9 AM or about 2 mins after I thought to myself, "I picked the wrong stand again!". Appeared out of no where, thought he was a doe until he turned his head at 70 yards. I saw three points on one side and that was all I needed, dropped him in his tracks. What made it even more special is I got him out of a blind one of my best friends loved to hunt on our last trip, which was the year before he passed away. Of course, later that night with only doe permit in hand I had a nice 8 walk 15 feet from me!! 18 years whitetail hunting and the 2 biggest whitetails I had ever seen with a gun in hand were on the same day!
