View Full Version : SILO getting UPGRADED

After many years it is time to upgrade the VBulletin software to help me keep up. Many of the patches that weren't compatible for what we do here have been upgraded. While helping me manage the site it should help some of you guys too!

A big change some of you will see is that we will be upgrading the ImageHost area. DON'T WORRY none of your previously uploaded images here will go away. For those of you with a smaller amount of photos you may want to migrate them to the new Imagehost. Those of you with lots (you know who you are) will still be able to access them. But you'll want to start uploading to the new Imagehost area PLEASE! The newer version will work with VBulletin better and will adjust to future upgrades better.

Please be patient with me and your man behind the scenes, George as we work though this upgrade. Hopefully all will go seamlessly, but we all know that rarely happens.

Look for George to give you heads up on all the features and doodads you will have at your disposal.

If you find your are having problems or encountering bugs post your issues here on this thread. George will monitor it for us.

And as always give a big SILO thank you to George for helping make SILO what it is. He's not really a hunter or fisher, but he is a hell of a good guy...:)

Just to add a few things to what our fearless leader said above.

Please Post Bugs & Problems Here

If you run into any problems or see something that just doesn't seem to be working like it should please post in this thread and let me know. I'll jump on it and get it fixed ASAP today if I can. Also, posting it here in the thread publicly let's others whoa re experiencing the same problem know that it's not just them -and- that it ahs already been reported.

What New Image Host???

The new personal photo Albums feature is located right next to the old one. in the navigation bar at the top. It's just hidden under the Community drop down menu. Just click on Community in the top bar up there and the Pictures & Albums link will appear like this:

http://www.siloutdoors.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1375&stc=1&d=1321040703

I'll give everyone a run down on all the new features in a separate thread but for now, have a look around and see what you can discover on your own that's different. The navigation bar at the top is a great place to start ;)

spammers must have upgraded too.

just deleted a bunch of them.

Thanks flatlander. Yeah, there were a bunch of them.

Bob and George, thanks for everything you do keeping this site up.

George

Thanks to you guys for all you do as well!

Hey I saw where a bunch of spammers got through today and you had to ban a ton of em. Thanks for that and sorry. The automated system we have in place to catch them works great but I had to turn it off to upgrade it and a swarm of them got through (they are literally hammering the site every minute). The system is back on but it's only about 99% effective. For every 100 it blocks it lets 1 in.

It'll get better though. All this time SILO hasn't had the spam defense software on got it added to a bunch of spammer's lists. It's a bunch of automated bots hitting us but once they realize we have this software in place they'll slowly start removing us from their lists as we're a waste of resources for them :)

In the mean time, please be on the lookout for the odd ones that get through. For the next month or so I expect about 3 to 5 of them to get through daily. Also check out the new inline moderator tools that allow you to delete the threads and ban them all from right here on the site without going into the moderator panel. There are some new tools in the mod panel as well so check those out and let me know if you have any questions.

A couple of times when I posted on a forum with a reply using my cell phone that I had double post. So I had to delete one.
Not sure if it had anything to do with the upgrade or not, It hadn't ever done it before.

lofjas, thanks for letting us know. Has it done it since yesterday?

I noticed that I'm getting the ads again after the upgrade. Will those of us that are sponsors be flagged again to not get ads?

Looking good.

George
11-12-2011, 11:04
Got it. I'll talk to Bob because there are a bunch of user groups (none of them named "sponsor") and I'm not sure which one isn't supposed to see ads :)

Soon as he gets back to me I'll get you all fixed up today.

Thanks for the upgrades, but the response time seems really sloooow. Is it my laptop or is there something I can do to speed it up?

HarryD
11-19-2011, 09:09
Missed-Em I am not having any problems, whats it doing on your end?

George
11-19-2011, 11:45
Yeah if anything the site is faster now. We changed how the ads are displayed and all the forum code is cleaner and more efficient.

We had some server problems late last night/earlier this morning but cleared it up quickly. Were you experiencing a slow down then?

Has been happening for a while. When I click on a new thread the "VBulletin/Call Louise" banner comes up, then a long wait - as much as 20 seconds - before the next set of adds, then I can brouse the thread. Frustrating. Maybe it works well for those who no longer get the adds, but what of us that do?

The only problem I've seen is when I look at a post and then want to go back to the forum, I have to hit the back key four times before it actually goes back a page.

If that's the case I'm going to work on this today and see if I can figure out where the slow down is for you.

Please reply with what browser you're using so I can test. I use Chrome and I'm not seeing that at all. It may just be some elements of the page that are doing that in certain browsers.

Are you seeing ads as well? Could also be the ads loading a frame on the page (sorta like a page within a page).

Appreciate you looking at it - just seems like it's taking a real long time to load the next set of ads.

Thanks

George I am using Firefox on a Mac. I am seeing the ads at the top but they are loaded and it does not matter how long I am on the page the back arrow does not work so I just go hit new post. :) Thanks for your hard work, it is appreciated.

EDIT George I just tried it again and it worked fine now so the problem may have been solved already.

I get multiple pages only on certain posts. The "Nice Deer but we"ll eventually get the hole story." is one example where I get multiple pages when I open the post.

I mostly get on through my smart phone and since thr upgrades noticed a big decrease in time loading the page. Like before id have to wait for the banner to load then the tabs, ads, then the actual thread but now its way faster on my end. Great work fellas!!!

Seems to be working great now. Using Firefox by the way. Now, if we could get rid of the ads on the first post of each page. They weren't there before the upgrade. Kinda irritating now. Don't mind the ads at the top of the page and on the sides, just the one in the first post of the page.

George,
Using iPhone 3s with iOS5.01. Two issues I've encountered on the iphone;

1. Since the upgrade, I am not able to post to the Forums. It prompts me for my login/password, accepts it and welcomes me back, then redirects me back to the forum, but I'm still a guest and the login is empty.

2. When I go back to previous page in a discussion, I'm prompted 3 times to resubmit a form or cancel. If I resubmit, I get the most current page, if I cancel, I get an old cached page.

First - Thank you so much for all the hard work you do!
I suspect this is more pilot error than any thing.. but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to embed a video or slideshow in a post now.. the code that my website generates in html to embed a slideshow or video absolutely doesn't work here.. and I have no code generator for BB code.. so... what's the best way. I just would like an option other than a link only.. Thanks much!

George, I still don't see the "M" to select to embed the videos. Is that still the recomended way to do it?No, the new system I'm testing right now will simply take the URL you paste into the thread and automatically embed the video.

it post's a picture that has to be clicked on then opens a new window to watch the video clip.

George - this what I get using either code that I can generate from my site.. I'd just as soon drive the traffic to my site ( which can host videos and slideshows , vs having to also post on you tube and direct people there.. maybe that isn't possible.. I just don't have the extra time or brain power to write the BB code every time.. and I rather not have to add an extra step to my workflow such as uploading to You Tube or Vimeo.. but is that what I am going to have to do? or Just post the link to my site and forget about embedding it for now?
