I'm nearly certain it is either a very young or very old chicken of the woods..I suspect young since it smallish...

yes they are edible.when fresh..if they start to age a little they are way too tough..

there really aren't any poisonous ones that look anything like them...how ever I always add the disclaimer that I can't be responsible for id'ing just off a photo..LOL

ask around your neighborhood...I'm sure somebody there will ID it as a chicken of the woods for you!
