This is at least a 2 day process. I started Thursday morning and just finished. It didn't take long for me to realize Mom didn't write down all the details. I had to pull out the BallŪ Blue Book for canning instructions.

This picture is the cucumber slices soaking in the lime water mixture.

This is after rinsing the cucumbers and placing them in ice water.

Then it's into the brine. The spices are in the small spice bag in the middle.

Voila, the finished product.

These are a sweet pickle. They're our favorite pickle.

And yes, you do weigh the cucumber slices and sugar.

My wife and I used to do bread and butter pickles. Process was some what the same but spices just a little different. It just seems to be taste better when you do it yourself. They really look good.

I made some bread and butter pickles a couple years ago. It was a recipe that didn't require canning. They were delicious too. Yes, homemade is better.

Mom used to put up lots of canned tomatoes and tomato juice, and even made her own concord grape juice when we were growing up. I wish we had the room for a larger garden so we could can more than we do.

Went out and got some of the little wild grape that grow along the roag side a few years back. Made homemade jam and home made grape juice. It had so much more flavor compare to the domestic grape we were using. We gave some to my father inlaw and every fall after that he would ask if we were going to make again. My wife was a city girl when we got married and had never canned before. Now when she does it she'll leave it on the counter for a few day just to show it off if someone comes over.

She learned good. My folks were both raised on farms so that was how they did stuff. My wife grew up in Korea so she wasn't familiar with canning, but she was familiar with dehydrating. She lets me do the canning, but she enjoys the fruits of my labors.
