how about some names of some decent tasting freeze dried meals.im going to travel lighter this year.most likely have one for lunch and eat in town at night.thanks

I don't use them. I buy MREs for hunting/camping. Come with their own heat source.

They're still better than the C-rats we had the first few years I was in the Air Force.

I rather liked many of the C-Rations...once you scraped the congealed fat off. I had many that were over 15 years old. Didn't care for for the green eggs nor the cold spaghetti, however. Ate most of them cold. Youngsters are spoiled.

Most MRE's can be fixed with some good hot sauce. I rather like the Beef Stew and the Minestrone soup.

That's why they started packing those tiny bottles of Tabasco sauce with them. Even lima beans are OK with a little Cajun Ketchup.

Mountain House makes some good stuff. I have a few of those and some MREs I'm taking to UT on my trip.

MREs have gotten bette over the years, the first generation were horrible, chicken ala king was like a bag of puke. Some of the later ones were actually ok.

I try and get a case of mre's every couple years... they are great to have around for JIC, and for light meals while camping. They last longer if stored in cooler temps FYI. They're great since the heaters are H2O activated.

I've gotten them from friends and family in the service, and bought them on Ebay.

The thing about them is you really need to increase your water intake IMO. They are very high in caloric values, and can bind you up if not careful. I've had some that are really tasty and some that aren't. Try finding the current menu, for A and B cases, and go from there... if interested.

Sportsmans guide sells mre meals. They have the full meals and just the entrees as well...

found some mountain home meals at academy sports.i read some pretty good reveiws on this brand.i will pick a few out and try them at home first.

+1 on the mountain house. I have eaten alot of different kinds of survival/hiking type food. Mre's are something that i have consumed alot of. If you are burning a ton of calories and falling asleep standing up with nothing but whats on yourback, they seem sent from heaven. The newer ones have heater kits in them that you just add water to. Heck, i even remember there being kosher mre's that where for jewish guys. Once we figured out they included some different types of food alot of us claimed to be jewish for a good while,lol!!!

But as far as civilian stuff i find the mountain house spaghetti is hard to beat. Make sure your water is really boiling and you leave it closed for a few minutes longer than they recomend to rehydrate fully.

I would rather hear my stomach growl from hunger, than hear the roar of my stomach trying to digest one of these meals….. I will stick to beef jerky and peanut butter crackers

The newer MREs are good. I picked up a few at the commissary to take deer hunting so I wouldn't have to lug a camp stove when camping overnight. The old ones that came in the dark brown package weren't bad either. They're both a lot easier to carry around than the old C-rats we had in my early days in the Air Force.

I think I posted a thread over in the survival guide area on MRE and Freeze dried meals. several sites to get them cheap, you have to be careful on expiration dates with this stuff
