I promised my buddy a loaf of mushroom and herb bread too... eek..I'd better get busy huh?? (they have to dry first for that...)
Set an extra plate, I'm on the way
lifestudent55 09-27-2007, 21:10 The bread sounds real good. What kind of soup do you make with them?
GS, do they grow on any type of tree?, I seen some 2 days ago that are very very similar have never eaten them tho, not real sure about them, the ones I know of are on side of a willow tree by waters edge? If it is them it is loaded, but I don't know guess if I get a photo to show you could tell huh? is that the same as what some call elephant ear?

take me and hunter to them..we'll declare them safe after careful examination!!!!
I'm pretty sure without even seeing them that you have found a "Mushroom Tree" same thing as honey hole to a bass fisherman...LOL
lifestudent55 09-28-2007, 20:37 Does part of that examination include a saute pan and butter?
gretchensteele 09-28-2007, 20:38 Of course !!!

Well, I guess I shall head over in the morn and get some of them and make sure, by photo, we actually found it by accident while fishing there was a smaller one floating in the water guess a squirrel broke it loose,?, any way they are there and if the type of tree doesn't matter, and if they come back every year to the same tree then that must be what they are. our timber, has good morels and hen-o-woods, thats about all we have ever messed with. bit like I asked about theses are all growing on the willows around one corner of the water.
gretchensteele 09-28-2007, 21:05 send us a picture..but I have a feeling you have hit a goldmine! There are some whitish bracket shrooms..they don't have the gills..and are hard as rocks..I'm just pretty sure that you have a found a lovely spot you'll want to remember...and check everyso often...mostly when the weather is like this..I find them when I am morel hunting the spring too..I think I've probably found them from march through nearly december...not much in terrible heat waves, but they'll pop out after a good rian..cool night, warm days..
And yep some folks call em elephant ears becaus ethan get really big....I can usually spot them from the road...lol
OK, well I am sure that the one is because some I picked the old timer I TAKE FISHING every now and again called it an elephant ear... I never ate it gave it to him. But Wow, no i am excited to get a few and try them out...LOL, Thanks

gretchensteele 09-29-2007, 07:39 ROFL..how pefect Life!!
Oh my goodness, that was too funny.....he was all serious too...lol.
lifestudent55 09-29-2007, 15:09 Hey you missed a great time hiking through the multiflora and stuff today Bam! Gretchen and Mrs. Life had a good time discussing edible plants and stuff. There weren't any shrooms by the lake because it's so dry, but Gretchen took us to a tree that had a bunch of big oysters. Yeah, we're gonna be eatin good.
I thought you might like that vid, especially after Gretchen offered to perform a careful mushroom examination using a saute pan for rlf.
Ok , well start a new thread and tell us all about it, so we don't hijack this one......lol..
lifestudent55 09-29-2007, 16:49 I'm going to have to see what recipes Mrs Life comes up with for those oysters. I'm sure she'll come up with something interesting. We'll be eatin good in the neighborhood for sure.
lifestudent55 10-02-2007, 08:55 Gretchen, I was in the kitchen this morning trying to decide what I wanted for breakfast and saw those oyster mushrooms and decided 'why not'. I sautéed some with some chopped onion then made an omelet with them. It was a good omelet too.
lol.....b ate some last night.........:)
dane, they got alot of pros to eating them too.....a natural statin drug...vitamin b.c and d I think I read....
lifestudent55 10-02-2007, 09:33 Yep. We used to eat morels just because they tasted so good. It wasn't till recently I read about the the health benefits. Just more reasons to eat mushrooms (as if we needed them), right?
Finally something good that isn't processed right.....
