View Full Version : look what I found today...
this small group of oysters was growing on a log that was floating in a small pond in NILO, west branch of the DuPage river, if they didn't look a little old I would have swam out to get them, I asked the guy that was standing there with me if he liked mushrooms, he said "yea, but I know there are some that will kill you" I told him the ones on that log were CHOICE! I don't think he believed me. I believe the host tree was a willow, I used to find them growing on a few willow trees I had growing in a swamp on property I had in Lenzburg.

if you're talking abut Oyster thaqt you buy in the store, then no not that kind, these wild ones blow away the store bought variety, sometimes I really load up on these in the fall and you can't freeze them, so I've been known to share, just ask fullstrut, if I get a bunch this year life I'll give you a pm and get some to you.
Can they be dehydrated???
I found MANY of these, but wasn't sure on the ID>..

That's the best offer I've had in a long time. We cook a lot of oriental foods (my wife's Korean) and mushrooms are essential!

I think they can be dehydrated, I don't know much about that though, I've tried freezing them, when you thaw them out they turn to mush and don't taste the same
. as far as identifying them Bob, I really don't think there are any unedible shrooms that grow on trees like this, white to tan, gills, sometimes yellow slime when really fresh.

Man I heard that! Mine was even worse when I was having bad side effects from some medication.
I'll be sure to remember your offer. Thanks.
have you ever tried vacum bagging them?
Fullstrut65 09-19-2007, 20:48 I dont think anybody here would like oysters. Just keep bringing them by the house and I will dispose of them properly.
DetectDave 09-19-2007, 21:49 As a Homeland Security measure, I have volunteered to work w/ the FDA checking the appropriateness of all ...and I mean all ..wild fungi for human consumption. I will be having Ms. G, as my professional examiner, make sure that all of my personal consumption (strictly in the line of work I might add) is without peril. Please contact me with your samples , (6 oz or more needed for testing purposes) and I will ensure the good health of your families. I only offer this service as a public servant. (and I mean servant).:D :D :D

Yeah, right. Like that'd happen. The same goes for you too DDave. :D
My wife likes to stir fry them with some chiles and just a little soy sauce and a touch of sesame oil. They're a bit spicy that way, but they do taste good. We also use them in soups. Ever make a mushroom bisque with oyster 'shrooms?
hopefully there will be enuf to share with everyone.
"Mushroom Bisque?, NO SHROOMZ FOR YOU!"
just kiddin' the shroom nazi took over!
